Interesting remark on Birth Certificate
I wonder if he did not actually go to the Register Office in person but sent someone else (maybe one of your grandparents) with the declaration that he was you father. Seems strange in that case that your mother didn't go to register you though. Even though he was in a protected occupation he may we...

I suggest looking for the births first. If they were registered it would have been at the same time so they will end up with either the same District, Volume and Page reference in the index or the page numbers will be one apart as they will be last on one page and first on the next. All you can do i...

I have had something like this on a certificate from the GRO. It seems to be recording a correction. http://www.fhug.org.uk/images/uploads/certnum1.jpg http://www.fhug.org.uk/images/uploads/certnum2.jpg In these scans from one of my certificates you can see 23 next to where Scoot has been crossed ou...

Privacy for data
Sorry I just reread your original posting and realised I missed the bit about deleting all the facts that were linked to the source.

Privacy for data
Why not make a copy of your data in a new file, open that file, go to the Sources tab and delete the source. This seems to delete all mention of it throughout the file. Or have I missed something?

No duplicate records, but duplicates in Diagram
The best training course I know of is the user manual. It is laid out well as a tutorial and the chapters can be taken individually. It is the only online tutorial I have ever completed on any software; it covers things in enough detail so you understand without boring you to death.

That's one of the things I really like about FH, there's more than one way to achieve things so you can use whichever you prefer.

PC to Mac
Mac users often run VirtualPC which allows them to run Windows based applications so they can use FH as well. If you use the search on this site and enter Virtual PC as the search string you will find several Mac users recommending this approach.

adding children
Alternatively use Diagram editing and click and drag to add the child between two existing ones (see chapter 5 in the manual). For example in the tree below if you click on either Bill Jones or Tina Adams and drag down between Ron and John. http://www.fhug.org.uk/images/uploads/click1.JPG A dotted ...

Splitting a tree
There is a very simple way to do it. First make a backup copy of your data under a different file name. Under the File menu of Family Historian you will find Split Tree Helper. Select Delete all Individuals NOT found by the Individual query below and in the drop down box for Individual query selec...

How Far do you go ?
Nick posted his reply while I was still writing mine so I hadnt seen it until after posting mine. While I commented about adding more data as I get it, I totally agree with Nicks comments about verifying data received from others. I find it very hard to get some people to tell you their sources,...

How Far do you go ?
David I think this is all down to personal preference. My own interests are in going back as far as possible on every direct line I can; I know this becomes totally impossible as the number of ancestors doubles with each generation, but you can get most back to the early 19th century with the BMD r...

Deaths
From a rough search on FreeBMD, http://freebmd.rootsweb.com, age at death appears to have been included from 1866 onwards. At a later date in the 20th century this becomes date of birth instead.

Are the BBC being honest ?
I suspect the owners of Family Tree Maker (FTM) asked the BBC is they could use the series name and logo on their product. It's not really dishonest of the BBC, it's just marketing by FTM.

Use of Place Names
I tend to use the place names that were in existence at the time. So for instance my sister in law was born in Wordsley, Staffordshire whereas her two children born at the same hospital some thirty years later were born in Wordsley, West Midlands. I agree this can cause problems when searching but...

Problem deleting 2nd spouse
To avoid disaster make sure you have Prompt for backups selected on the Backup tab under Tools, Preferences. I let FH create a backup any time I use it, then occasionally I prune them back to one per month for the past year and one per year before that. I would also recommend doing a regular backup ...
