finding families outside of census records

You specifically mention Devon which has a fairly lively, judging from its web site, Family History Society - and a forum where you can post questions

Support for OpenOffice formats

I would support pdf, docx and open office documents... though, with the latter two, both the latest version of Word and Open Office allow one to save in the 'doc' format.

Tracing Family tree without certificates

BUT remember if you do put it on, there are many out there who make leaps of faith with no back up - both on Genes and Ancestry... variously on a line I am tracing the father comes from Hungary, Wiltshire, and Hampshire. But those folk when asked are totally convinced their version is right though t...

Mystery solved as I seem to be all over the country whenever I have looked at that... pity we cannot in some cases be transported to those places for a change of scene and when relevant to do some local research [grin]

Following on from Chris's comment - I have just had fun with AVG - it behaved in a very peculiar way when downloading an update - and Word would not work afterwards - AVG had apparently seen a bit of Word as a virus - have decided to go over to Avast pro-tem having uninstalled AVG and gone back to a...

Ah yes - the thing you know you found on Ancestry, and then it disappears next time you look - even as happened to me, when you put in the same search criteria... So sharing your frustration rather than actually helping!

I have created a single additional custom attribute field for things that don't quite fit - if in doubt I put the item in that. I call it 'additional attribute' and use the main field to make a sentence of what has happened (eg 'Jane wrote to her sister in law') - this prints out logically in narrat...

Gt Grandfather both a soldier and a sailor?

I would say not impossible - he might have been discharged/left one and then found life difficult and rejoined in order to say avoid the poorhouse or its equivalent. Not sure whether it could have been a direct transfer though again its possible.

Do you recognise this car?

On my screen it looks like the bumper/bar/line at the back of the numberplate, and which shows each side, is continued where the slot is i.e. the starting handle hole is empty. My long ago memories of a starting handle was that is was quite large (but then I was very small!) on my Dad's ancient car ...

Have you deleted a few records? I know I deleted six people/records and so my record count shows a number which is 6 below the last individual's record number.

Journeys amp; travelling relatives

Whilst I agree that the emigration and imigration events are not really correct for this purpose, I do use them for travel - but then I think usage partly depends on whether you share your GEDcom file or not and whether you import others' - as I don't do either (prefering to type in the info from an...

Memory Stick with U3 : can one use demo FH on it?

Jan . For me it provides an easy way of looking at my information but I do not want to use it for making any alterations to the main copy nor do I want to be able to print.  So a cut down version works for me.   It seems that the normal version of Firefox works on the U3 stick - I just used the vers...

Memory Stick with U3 : can one use demo FH on it?

Bitten the bullet and now have the demo version of FH on my U3 4 gig sandisc memory stick - does all I want which enables me to look at stuff and show others ... no printing but that is not a problem for me - so all I do is copy the gedcom across as and when.... If you have or are getting vista and ...

Gedcom Census Ref Code

I would say no reference needed. Thanks Andrew for the explanation - unlike the England and Wales ones the full download version of the page (which is what most of us save I think) does not have the detail other than a page number. HOwever I find I have one index save, which does have the informatio...

Gedcom Census Ref Code

Hi Andrew

I looked again at my downloads and nowhere do those numbers appear for these census forms!  So where on the form do they appear - or did you not get yours from Scotlandspeople?  If there is a difference between where one gets them from then putting in reference numbers may not be an issue?

Thanks Nick for the 1911 bit

I have a few downloaded Scottish census forms via Scotlandspeople - mine do not seem to have reference numbers!

The dates seem to be the same.

Multimedia after a restore from zip file

I have just had to go back to an earlier file and all was well, and I have added in the new stuff etc.  That was until I wanted to do a print out - my pictures had disappeared... other than the four that I embedded before I understood how to link. When I went to work with Multimedia objects I found ...

I use Ancestry (no wonder it was bought out by a private equity co as it seems the market leader) and findmypast.  Gave up on thegenealogist.  Use the FreeBMD etc sites and GenesRU though have a love hate relationship with it.  and whilst it is not exactly a research site I have listed my families o...

To link existing people together I use the main tab on the property box.  To link a child to a parent click on the child space and you are offered a 'link to existing record' option, click on that and find the person - and you can do the same for parents too.   To unlink there is a menu item under e...

Problem opening photos sent by email

I had some files sent to me in jpg format that would not open despite trying Irfran (?) and photofiltre (fortunately they were sent again in a different format) and then one in mim (what programme is that as I did a search and could not find it). And it may be that they are just plain corrupted. AOL...
