The 'narrative descendent' is the report I use most. I downloaded V5 this afternoon and had to look around for it. It is under 'Publish' on the File - Edit - View . . . action bar. After that the names looked familiar to me. I hope that's the one you want.

Narrative Report - paper size
When I save the narrative report as an RTF document, it is stored and then automatically opened in MS Word. When I go to Page Setup - Paper Size, it says 'Custom size' and has the dimensions 20.39 cm x 29.1 cm. There is drop-down from which I can select A4 210 mm x 297 mm). - Where did 20.39 cm x ...

Reusing Source Record Ids
I deleted a few sources in the early days and now I have gaps. (I know better now and change the name of an obsolete source to XXX and reuse it later, or I use the merge source technique I spotted in this forum.) Is there a way of reusing the missing numbers. Trivial, I know, but it bugs me.

Narrative Report - paper size
When I create a narrative report and look at it in Word, the paper size is 'custom' and I have to change it to A4. I have gone back to all the default Options settings, so I don't think it is there. Please advise.

Spell Check
I find my spelling mistakes and typos by creating an RTF narrative document and using the spell check in the word processor. A little laborious but gets the job done.

Formatting of D by G Narrative Report
Thanks for the reply but it doesn't really help. I have to do some other formatting after the .rtf file is produced (moving spouse's pictures to be near the spouse, inserting stuff that FH doesn't know about, etc) so the pdf route doesn't work for me. FH's failure to align the paragraphs and indent...

Picture of Spouse in Narrative Support
Thanks, Chris. I understand the problem (working as designed and not a bug) but I am confused as to what 'Root/relative' means. My ancestor appears not to be a relative! Like you I spend time on the RTF narrative document moving pictures and doing other reformatting, some that FH should be doing an...

Picture caption in Narrative Report
Thanks, Chris. Worked fine. A tad obscure for you - completely opaque for me. The manual said put it in the note field; it never occured to me to put it in the untitled box (Links?) rather than the box marked Picture Note.

Picture of Spouse in Narrative Support
I have a picture of my great-great-grandmother, but not her husband. I have linked her picture to her record. In the Descendants by Generation Narrative Report her picture appears beside the text about her husband, and not beside her details, which are on the next page. So I set the 'Spouse pictures...

Picture caption in Narrative Report
The default picture caption seems to be the name of the person linked to the picture followed by the picture's title. I want a picture (a church) without the name of the person, just the title. I thought putting the required text in the 'Picture Note' field and ticking the 'Use Note as Caption' box ...

Formatting of D by G Narrative Report
The Descendants by Generation Narrative Report is my main output from FH. I am trying to understand why there are significant differences between the report produced within FH and the report produced when saved as an .rtf file. 1. There are nice clean hanging paras in the FH report, but the .rtf rep...

Narrative report info for relatives
Sorry, maybe I confused the issue with my example. I have a brother of a great-great-grandfather. I know a lot about him so he has nine events. I don't want him shown with a + and the information displayed later in the report. So I combine some of his events by adding notes and keeping the total t...

Narrative report info for relatives
I am creating 'proper' records only for direct ancestors and their siblings. For these siblings I have a variable number of pieces of information (eg: spouse, list of children) and I record my sources against each piece. When the number of pieces is greater than 5 (I think) FH creates a new 'major' ...

Baptism/Christening
I had the same problem (what IS the differnce between baptism and christening?). I went to the Event/Attribute list, clicked on More>>, clicked on Baptism then Properties, and modified the template to say 'christened' instead of 'baptised'. Worked a treat. Now it doesn't matter which event I select ...

Alas each block of children is a table in Word, so I have to go and modify the column widths of each table in turn - a bit of a pain for 30 tables.

Narrative reports: (-) and italics
Two questions about Narrative reports:
A. Can I supress the (-) when no dates are known?
B. Can I get the child information (when he/she is not given a section of his/her own) in plain text and not italicised?

Narrative reports - tabs
I am a big fan of narrative reports as the best way of sending information to relatives round the world (as MS Word documents). When I save a report, the tab before the list of children (which was .5 in FH (my choice)) becomes 2.5 in Word. I then have to live with the extra pages or modify each blo...

OK, I am happy to use Name Used for a second name, an abbreviation or a nickname (and just ignore the supplied Nickname field).
What about prefixes? Please can someone tell me how I get the prix Rev. or Sir to appear.

Displaying information in Narrative reports
The unadorned entry reads 'John Savage, son of Robert Savage and Catherine Stanley, died in 1492.' If I put 'He was the eldest son.' in the new 'Info' Event with a template of {info}, the entry now reads 'He was the eldest son. John Savage, son of Robert Savage and Catherine Stanley, died in 1492.' ...

Displaying information in Narrative reports
I use Notes rather than Events for bits of information that I am happy to appear as separate paragraphs below the basic stuff. But sometimes I have just a phrase that I want to include in with the Events, eg: Ran away to sea. So I defined a Custom Event called 'Info'. This works fine except when the...

Prefixes and Nicknames
I am a lapsed FH user - back again and impressed by the new stuff, especially Narrative reports. But I can't find the following in manuals, index or Help: A) If a person has a prefix of Dr., Rev. or Sir, how do I get it to display in narrative reports? I see mention of Name Formats but not where to ...
