Finding text using expressions
Peter - you're right, this is new in 4.1. Previously 'ContainsText' could only be used with records. Now it can be used with any data item. I notice that we somehow failed to list it as one of the new features in the 'What's new in 4.1' page on the FH website, but I've now added it there.

Saving custom colours
I appreciate it's not ideal, but you can keep a note somewhere of the RGB values that you used. To see the RGB colour values for each item, click the 'Custom Colours' button in the Colours dialog - the RGB values are shown on the right. That would at least save you having to effectively redesign the...

Problem with latest upgrade on V4
Hi - as Jane says: please post an email about this to support@family-historian.co.uk. If you're happy to do so, please include your GEDCOM file as an attachment, together with instructions on exactly what we need to do to reproduce the problem (if we can reproduce it). Thank you.

More problems with printing and PDFs
We have confirmed that there is still an issue with some lines not showing correctly in PDF files (can also affect printing incidentally). The problem only arises with 'All Relatives' trees when the orientation is not top-down. We will investigate this. Thank you for reporting it.

Do any of the people have multimedia which are flagged as to be excluded from diagrams (you can set this in the Multimedia tab again)? If so, I would try changing those flags and see if that does anything. Also, you say you've tried changing the picture preference order. Do you mean in the Picture...

Problems printing everyone chart as PDF
Stuart - You're right. FH does not currently print a page if it would just have the coloured duplicate-linking lines on it. This may be what you want some of the time. However, I appreciate that it would be nice to at least have a choice in the matter. I suggest you propose this for the FHUG Wis...

No double marriage lines in inserted tree
By default Family Historian uses what it calls the 'Fork Style' for Ancestors. But if you prefer double lines, just open Diagram Options and untick 'Use Fork Style for Lines Connecting Ancestors' in the first tab of Diagram Options.

A little quirk that has me annoyed... how to fix?
The GEDCOM spec does not allow any data to follow the RESI tag on the same line (unlike many other tags); so Ancestry are wrong to put address information there - and that is why FH will treat this line as invalid and ignore it, and any other 'subsidiary' lines that add more details for that tag. Di...

Just for interest, there is another way of switching the 'main' box vs. remarriage boxes. Click on 'Movement Control Box' on the Diagram menu to open that box. Then select the main box that you wish to switch, and click on either of the 2 'Shift Spouse Boxes' buttons (which look like 2 angle brack...

Bug: Julian dates do not work in queries
In the current version, date matching in queries only works if the dates are specified in the same calendar. If you switch to specifying a date using the Julian calendar, you should find that Julian dates will be matched correctly, but Gregorian dates won't. However, Family Historian should be abl...

We didn't intend the New button to be available in this context, so Jane is right - it should have been hidden. But Anonymous is also right - there's no particular reason why it couldn't be available here; so we will think about that. Thank you for pointing this out.

Chris - the min/max box width figures do not straightforwardly set the overall box width if you are displaying pictures to the side of the text. If you were displaying pictures in the middle of the text, or not displaying pictures at all, they would give you the results you expect. An easy workarou...

Strange behaviour of %INDI.~SPOUgt;NAME%
Jane is quite right. When we added support for same sex relationships, we needed a gender-neutral way of accessing the two spouses in a family record. So we extended the role of the ~SPOU shortcut so that it could be used not just with individuals, but also with families. To quote from the Help: 'Wh...

Does this always happen? Even after a reboot? Which version of Windows are you using? How much memory do you have? Jane's suggestion of upgrading to 4.0.2 is a good one (click on 'About Family Historian on the Help menu to confirm which version you're on). If you have a lot of pictures, when you...

It doesn't do that when I try it. If I double-click on a project file (with .fh_proj extension) FH is opened and opens the project. Does this happen with all project files when you try it? What about the sample project? Just for interest, if you double-click on any .ged file, FH should open it. ...

One more thing: There are 5 chapters dedicated to diagrams in 'Getting the Most From Family Historian 4'. These are: 3, 8, 9, 10, 11. Robin I certainly had envisaged that if you were selecting 'Family Historian PDF File' as your printer, you would want to use a custom page size - which of course you can do. Here are some suggestions of things you can do to make the process easier. My suggestion would be to start by selecting 'Fa...

Robin If your friend is using the option to save a a diagram on a single PDF page they would get better results by upgrading to 4.0.2.
