Family Historian has encountered a problem!
Kevin the file pscript5.dll is not actually part of F.H. at all. It sounds like a postscript file, which suggests that the crash is actually occurring within a printer driver. This can happen even if you aren't printing. This is because F.H. shows you on-screen what you would get when you print. ...

All Relatives Diagram
to sallye Family Historian's All Relatives diagram is we believe unique to F.H. It shows not just ancestors and descendants, but all relatives, laid out so that you can see how they are related to the root(s). In order to do this, the diagram needs a system for laying out relatives so that they ca...

Crash on clicking descendants chart button
Michael the crash report says that the crash is occurring in pscript5.dll. That isn't actually part of the Family Historian code, so it must be a code module that gets called directly or indirectly by FH. It sounds like a printer driver (possibly something to do with postscript?). That's not impo...

Blanked boxes when printed out
Andreas I don't remember coming across anything like this before. Is your diagram a very big one? Some printer drivers internally use a small (16-bit) coordinate system, even if they are used with XP (where everything is supposed to be 32-bit). If you think that might be the problem, try printing...

To kmh I've had a look at this and you are of course quite right, 'empty' custom attributes are automatically deleted when you save. So as you say, the solution for now is just to add any data at all when you create your custom attribute. It happened because we completely re-implemented custom even...

Have you tried running Validate on the File menu to see if file is corrupt in some way? If ever F.H. hangs that is always the first thing to try.
I followed your instructions and it didn't hang when I did it. I tried saving as HTML, RTF and text and it all worked fine.

List of marriages
Jeremy Queries always return at most one row for each record that matches the filtering used. An Individual query will return one row for each matching Individual. So you won't get one row for each marriage with an Individual query. I would suggest instead that you add extra columns for 2nd and 3r...

Some attributes in Family Group Sheet missing??
Sabine Possessions isn't a custom attribute. Its a standard one. I have tried this on my computer and they show up fine. Can you check which version of Family Historian you are running (click on About Family Historian on the Help menu)? If its earlier than 2.3.1, I would suggest upgrading. You ...

Ross and Gamnel this is very much an advanced topic, which ordinary users are not expected to ever need or want to know about. So for any reader who doesn't have a clue what I'm on about - don't worry. No-one needs to understand any of this stuff! That said... The expression between the % characte...

This message is actually put out by a Microsoft-supplied program that manages online help. It is always put out if you ever ask for help with respect to any part of Family Historian for which there isn't any help. There is supposed to be a way of making it say something sensible rather than this a...

Wrong Fonts in Property Dialog Box v.2.2.4
Andrew forgot to mention that Jane (Taubman)pointed out that you can set the font for all dialog captions centrally; so you could at least solve that part of it that way (right-click on the desktop and select Properties, then choose the Appearance tab and click Advanced - at least, this works in Win...

Andrew one further thing. I don't suggest that you do this, because it might have all sorts of knock-on effects that you might not like - but if you changed your computer's International settings, to specify your country as being the one that uses the language you are having a problem with (e.g. Hun...

thanks for the offer. May well take you up on that in the future.

Andrew - there isn't a way to change the font in the Property Dialog at present; although clearly something needs to be done to handle the issue you've raised. For now, the best thing I can suggest is to switch to the 'All' tab of the Property Dialog and use fields there (click in the right-column ...

Merged file invalid
I've been communicating with Michael directly since this problem arose, so this posting is really for everyone else's benefit. It turns out that there is indeed a bug in Merge/Compare which can in exceptional circumstances cause an invalid file to be generated. This bug will be fixed in the next re...

Merged file invalid
Michael thank you very much for your detailed and helpful description of what happened. I should say at once that even if you made mistakes, Family Historian should never have generated an invalid file whatever you did, so it does sound as though there is a bug there. Can you describe in more detai...

Saving a half completed merge?
P.S. The tip solution is not perfect of course. It works best if you are basically happy with the contents of the file you are merging in, and don't frequently find the need to 'discard' (i.e. not bring in) records and fields from it. If you do, they will of course re-appear the next time you try ...

Saving a half completed merge?
You're right that saving a half-completed merge would not be a minor modification. There are workaround strategies that might help though. In fact, there is a tip in the Help about how to merge large files over multiple sessions. Cliick on Help > Contents > Principal Dialog Boxes > Merge/Compare D...

Making a file of differences between gedcoms
Its a good idea. I can't think of any way of doing it at present, but I've logged it. Why not add it to the FHUG Wish List? The Audit Trail reference simply meant that by keeping your backups, and by comparing, you had a means of working out what was changed when. It didn't mean that you could ke...

Linking new GEDCOM file data to an existing tree
The Merge/Compare dialog is designed to handle importing data where some parts of the imported data needs to be merged (e.g. some records in both files are about the same people, or some source records are about the same sources). You can use it to append (simply add new data without merging any rec...

photos in diagrams
Family Historian is not supposed to leave any space at all for photos for people who don't have them. The only circumstances in which it does this, that I am aware of, is if you have a 'broken link' to a photo, where the photo file is not found. You can check for broken links (and possibly fix the...
