Deleting UDF fields

I think the following should work, but as always, if in doubt, take a backup before you start just in case. Open FH and click on Tools > Preferences and then choose the 'File Load/Save'. Tick 'Exclude other applications' extensions to Gedcom'. Then click on File > New, to effectively close the curre...

Small Hiccup with Gedcom Census

Maureen and Nick Please ignore my previous email. What I said there was quite wrong. I was in a bit of a rush when I wrote it - always a mistake. I said in my previous email that if you're not using FH the gap between autosaves can be longer than the amount you specified. However, later I had anothe...

Small Hiccup with Gedcom Census

Maureen Did you do a save in Family Historian prior to starting work on GEDCOM census?  Because if you didn't, that could explain what happened.  I know that the gap was more than thge 2 minutes you use as your autosave period, but for technical reasons, if you are not actually using FH at all, and ...

Relationship to Root

Just a follow-up on this one. Rusty emailed me to say that she was still getting the problem even when both parents were recorded, and I too have been able to make this happen (eg. with 'half-aunts'. I believe I have now identified the problem - it should be fixed in the next version.

Relationship to Root

Rusty - thank you for the file you sent. I had a play and initially I couldn't get it to happen. Then I had an idea. I tried deleting your husband's mother's record and his sister's record. Then I added a sister for your husband (as another child of his only recorded parent). She was then displayed ...

Rusty - I haven't come across this one before but it sounds like a glitch.  Any chance you could send me your GEDCOM file with instructions on how to reproduce this?  If you're happy to do that, please email the file to support@family-historian.co.uk

Thanks.

Family Names Query

It's easy enough to create a query that will show a list of surnames in your family tree file.  But there's no way that you can get it to only show each surname once. To create a surname list, create a new Individual query in the Query Window.  In the Fields list, expand 'Name' and select :SURNAME. ...

Census Records in Records Window Columns

Assuming you are using the standard census event for Individuals, you need to right-click on the column headings in the Records Window and select 'Configure Columns'. Then scroll to the bottom of the list, select '' and press the '>' button to add it to the list. Set the Heading value to '1841 Censu...

We have a very friendly relationship with FindMyPast.com, and have worked with them on joint projects in the past.  But we are quite separate companies.  I don't know what the advert refers to exactly ('customised' may be a clue), but FindMyPast.com are not involved in developing FH if that is what ...

Program compatibility problem in Vista

I have looked into this one, and I believe that it is caused by a difference of opinion between Vista and the installation program we use.  I am hopeful that upgrading to the latest version of the installation program should fix this problem (stop Vista complaining unnecessarily).

Bug not fixed in 3.1.2

Peter - 3.1.2 is what you call a 'patch'. i.e. it is a release designed to fix one specific problem to do with EMF files (but we through in the zip file change as a bonus). We put it out because the EMF problem that (some people only) had, seemed urgent enough to justify it.

Arthur are you clicking on 'Pictures' on the Insert menu to do this? When I do that, it always seems to just remember the last folder used, and it doesn't appear to make any difference whether I'm addiing a picture for an Individual or a Source. Can you say a bit more about what you're doing, in cas...

Saving Diagrams to emf png on 3.1

Lol and Ballinger I've had a good look at this problem and have never been able to reproduce it. Any additional information that anyone who suffers from this problem can provide, would be helpful. For example (1) does it only happen when you save a diagram as EMF? What about other diagram types - e....

Problem printing diagram

Hi Joldies It does sound like a printer problem.  Does the problem only happen with large diagrams or with all diagrams? There is a technical issue to do with large diagrams which has to do with 16-bit vs. 32-bit coordinate spaces.  It doesn't really matter what this means except that the problem ma...

To move branches left or right, you usually click-and-drag on the childbar (or equivalent parent bar) when 'Box and Bar' drags are enabled. Have you tried doing that?

Saving Diagrams to emf png on 3.1

Peter I have had a good go at reproducing this problem, but have not been able to do so.  However, from what you say there clearly is a problem and I would very much like to get to the bottom of it, especially as your current workaround doesn't sound perfect either.  I have various ideas about thing...

Windows Vista 64 bit

You will be glad to hear that we have now fixed this problem. Essentially the problem was that very early editions of Family Historian used a 3rd party installation program that was a 16-bit program. Please note: the installation program is quite separate from Family Historian itself. F.H. is and al...

I've just heard back from InkSaver's 2nd line support who say that they now have a fix for this problem. Quote:

'If your customers report this issue with InkSaver they can download the latest version from our website at http://www.inksaver.com/overview/demo-download.html.'

Trumph - Here are a few suggestions to add to Jane's. First though - to revert to version 3 you have to uninstall, and then reinstall. Before doing that, however, I would urge you to try to find out which program is causing the conflict. Family Historian says that something on your PC is behaving li...

V3.1 Problem - system debugger active

Trumph the problem must be occuring because there is a conflict between Family Historian and something else that you are running on your PC.  The first thing to try is to reboot your PC and start FH before running anything else.  If that works OK, then try running candidate programs and see which of...

Searching within a diagram (Simon Orde)

This feature was added in version 3. It has a new command on the Edit menu called 'Find in Diagram'. To use it, leave your diagram window open (you mustn't close it) but switch to another window to find the person you are looking for (e.g. in the Records Window). Select them there and then click on ...
