Census Transcripts and handwriting
I think on Ancestry John Cole has been transcribed as John Cale in 1841 and John Cote in 1851 (and age 13 instead of 18).

Hi Dave,
I know exactly what you mean, as I used to do the same thing. My suggestion would be to use the Ancestral Sources Data Entry plugin for FH5, it makes it so much easier.

Census Transcripts and handwriting
Hi Phil, The problem with incorrect transcriptions (in my case on Ancestry) is one that everyone comes across. Some are easy enough to find, one of our family names is BLUCK, whick can sometimes be mis-transcribed as BLACK. Some are not so simple, I have people called INCE mistranscribed as PRICE (b...

Map Life Facts Chapman/County/State Abbreviations
Hi Mike, Like Bill, I also spell out County and Country codes fully, and as this is how I would want them to appear on all reports etc. I am not sure I would use Chapman codes (unless FH expanded them for reports), although I do like the idea. Having said that, I also agree with Andrew (and yourself...

County Flags
Hi Merenwen I didn't go as far as County flags, but I do have Country flags on my icons for BMD and census. When it came to Ireland I was aware how easy I could offend someone by putting the wrong Irish flag, as feelings of nationality are very strong there. I opted for the traditional diagonal red ...

Version 5 backup project folder
From memory, windows has a problem zipping files over 2GB, using the standard 'send to compressed (zipped) folder' functionality. For larger files, WinZIP works well. I assume the backup must use the standard windows method.

Fan Charts
I have had a quick look at v5, and had a look a fan charts as I have been looking forward to them. They look really good. I was wondering if it is possible to rotate font to fit better on the outer generations. I can't see a way, but I may be missing something.

I ordered my copy from My History on Sunday night. Just arrived. Woo hoo. can't wait to get stuck in.
Book List
Hi Merenwen,
I can't help with the books, but the Scotlands People website is the best online place for Scottish records. It is token based only, so it can get expensive if you are looking for a lot of people.
Good Luck

I used a laptop, standalone PC, and I sometimes download source information from a different PC. As I don't always have access to the internet from my laptop, I have my genealogy data (including the Family Historian Projects folder) on a portable hard drive, plugged into whichever PC I am using, whi...

Baptism before Birth
Thanks for that. I think if I was doing the research for someone else I would put in two birth events and leave them to draw the conclusion. As the research is for myself (my close family don't understand my fascination with 'dead people'), I think I will draw my own conclusion and just have the one...

Looks like I may have been slightly wrong on the last post. I think it does show the DOB on the Baptism.
It looks like the birth was 30th January 1892.[smile]

Thanks Guys. I am reasonable certain the explanation of the discrepancy is correct. Date of birth on BC is 1st March 1892 Birth was register on 12th April 1892 (exactly 6 weeks after DOB) Baptism was 26th February 1892 Same place, same parents, same occupation of Father, same address. Unfortunately ...

I have one person in my tree who, according to the records, was baptised before she was born. I am assuming that the date given for the birth certificate was incorrect, and the parents didn't want to get a fine for late registration. There are a couple of people in my tree that appear to have given ...

Hi Helen, I haven't used Irfanview, but I have scanned and stitched many photos, documents and maps (stitching with a different photo editor). I would imagine the stitching would be similar and would suggest two things to help. 1. Make sure there is a reasonable overlap visible on both scans. 2. Bef...

I think my problem is solved, thanks to a minimal fee to a professional researcher, restoring my tarnished faith in professional genealogists. After paying an initial consultation fee, the researcher based in Yorkshire, also could not find a birth certificate for Clifford Lincoln other than the ones...

Online databases e.g WVR, Findmypast and Ancestry
Hi John, I appreciate that FMP now covers all censuses, but when the 1911 census was released it was only available at http://www.1911census.co.uk for which you had to purchase tokens from FMP. I didn't see much point in paying FMP for both subscription and tokens, so I didn't renew my subscription ...

Online databases e.g WVR, Findmypast and Ancestry
I prefer Ancestry and have the worldwide membership due to having many ancesters in Canada and elsewhere. I did use FMP as well, but didn't like the searching as much, and wasn't happy at having to buy tokens on top of my subscription when the 1911 census was released. I now use Ancestry all of the ...

Adding icons for the first time
Hi Dagwood, I started off using flags to generate the icon display, but found it slightly annoying to run queries to set the flags every so often. This was made more complicated by having many different icons, with national flags showing where the B/M/D or census was. I also used wahsed out icons if...

How sad am I
I have just created a custom attribute for having a pet. I must be the saddest person on here. I could argue that they are an important part of the family (especially when we have 12 dogs and 4 cats), and that it gives more depth to the people on the tree, but it's really so that I can add their pho...

I wish someone had told me . . . When I started
When my Nan died in 2006, on her 79th birthday, I was next of kin (by Mum died 5 years before, and my uncle in his twenties). Going through my Nan's photos and documents is what started me on the family history voyage of discovery. There are three things I wish I had known (other than the necessity ...

After looking at the help files a bit more I think I need to...
1. Export the UK Census Templates
2. Edit the Exported file and search and replace 'UK' for 'England'
3. Import the edited file
4. Then repeat for Ireland, Scotland and Wales
