Re: Preserve and Hide/Show Columns
There's something really odd with the Source Rec My guess is that the '+' only shows if there is anything in the citation-specific details to show. So for a GRO Births Index entry, I get a '+' as the Source is GRO Births Index, and the Citation is the Ref / Vol / Page number of the entry. For the e...

Re: Project Media File Locations
Also, I have read questions from a number of users that are not aware that you can create a folder structure within the project Media folder - I think some users believe they have to store all files in a flat-folder structure, whereas in fact you can create as many directories and sub-directories as...

Re: Property window unsourced facts
However, here we are discussing customised Summary Templates which must specify explicitly all the fields to show. Thank you Mike, that is the bit I missed  I did read the article yesterday, it's very informative and clearly explained, I will be having a go at implementing some of the techniq...

Re: Property window unsourced facts
I made another edit to my Facts along the way. I might be misunderstanding what you are describing here, but don't these lines already show their values in the property box? Screenshot 2023-01-14 102034.jpg Edit: I now see you have added Address rather than Place so I can see this would add extra i...

Re: Naming and organising digital copies of old photos
E.g. J000346abc\2, is the 2nd spouse of J00346abc, who is a child of J00346ab, who in turn is a child of J00346a who is child of J00346, a direct ancestor of my root with an AN of 346. Simples :D Clever! I hadn't thought about doing it that way. As Mike says, the FH Record ID could change. Tools > ...

Re: Naming and organising digital copies of old photos
I give everyone a custom ID, and start each filename with this. Do you use the FH ID for the person Mike, or assign your own? If you assign your own, how do you keep track of who is who? I use your method for documents, but not photos (I use the FH user ID rather than assigning my own). I add the u...

Re: Naming and organising digital copies of old photos
I currently have about 1,000 photographs that I have processed and entered into FH7, and probably about another 1,000 photographs waiting to be organised. In general, I follow the same principles as Mike does in his post above, with a few tweaks. In my experience, you will need to be a bit flexible ...

Re: Check for Updates
Yes that's fair enough, thanks. None of the features I use have any known errors, and I prefer to update when there is a new feature available that I wish to use - for example your introduction of the COMMAINDEX function recently. My feeling is that in general software gets updated too frequently th...

Check for Updates
Sorry if I have missed how to do this, but is it possible to switch off checking for updates automatically? I can see in the Help file that AS checks every seven days, however I don't wish to upgrade yet and I don't need reminding. Thanks.

Re: Fact Type: adding a second place
This was discussed in detail quite recently, in this thread: Emigration Fact - Copying and Using Both Copies (21346)
It goes off topic a bit, but the answer you probably want is in the second post: "You can't create a Custom Fact with both From and To boxes, unfortunately".

Re: Emigration Fact - Copying and Using Both Copies
Unfortunately, (or fortunately) I have their Emigration, Immigration and their Departure from Municipality documents. I guess I could just jumble them all together into one Event, but that just seems to be too messy. I just use the Arrived and Departed fields, and use the narrative field to describ...

Re: 1921 England Census
Future providers of the 1921 England & Wales will unquestionably do a better job because they'll be able to look at the full page to get a better hint on the handwriting. I don't think this is the way transcribers are taught to work - certainly not how I was taught anyway, but that was some time ag...

Re: 1921 England Census
Do you have a subscription which includes the 1921 census? It can make it easier to plough through and check likely candidates. If you have them on the 1911 and/or 1939, I would suggest checking those addresses to see if they're still there (there is a tab at the top of the search box to search addr...

Re: half relations
Which line are you descended from? The first marriage or the second? From what you've explained it would seem one of the children from his second marriage is your 3x great grandmother or grandfather. Which would make the other children 3x great uncles & aunts, and any relatives from his first marria...

Adrian Cook, why not try it yourself? I knew you'd ask that  I was just closing down for the evening and I didn't have the mental energy left to start a new GEDCOM to test it with. I've tried this morning with the same results you and Bill got. It was just a thought. Adrian, I just tried this ...

Re: Problem with Paste Unformatted Text
Could I suggest copying without the last (Hannah Henshaw) line, and seeing what happens then?
I have a suspicion that it's the less-than sign ("<") which might be triggering a format since this is a typical open-bracket for an HTML tag.

Re: Using XML vs Gedcom to store data
Personally, I find that point of view rather arrogant - "FH works best with a splitter model, so forget all you learned with your old package and do it the way we always do". If you don't think FH should at least try to embrace other ways of working, just don't vote for any Wish List item that come...

I think it might say "Munic", short for Municipal, referring to his occupation as Municipal Relieving [Relief] Officer.

Re: Using XML vs Gedcom to store data
However I do really wonder why we need this. We'd just be turning citations into something very similar to splitter sources. I agree entirely. This seems like too much navel-gazing for something that already has a solution. It's a bit of a faff if I realise I have made spelling mistake in a (say) l...

Re: EMF icons - specifically sub-UN State flags (Munster, Scotland, Flanders etc.)
Having mulled this over this evening, I think I will step back from any actions. Having looked through the USA State flags, I'd be very surprised if anyone could identify more than one or two of them and so adding them as an icon to a diagram would be rather pointless I think. Some of the flags do n...

Re: EMF icons - specifically sub-UN State flags (Munster, Scotland, Flanders etc.)
Rats! So the dimensions set are "maximum dimensions" - specifying a rectangle within which the icon will be centred? Yes, as far as I can tell. They will size to the largest side and then centre to the other dimension. It's hard to tell and I could be wrong. Examples attached. Some (or maybe most) ...

Re: EMF icons - specifically sub-UN State flags (Munster, Scotland, Flanders etc.)
Your first screen shot does not look as if you have set all icons to have a consistent height - do some of the image files have blank space around them (particularly above and below)? I rather imagined that with images close cropped to "the flag rectangle" (let's not worry too much at the moment ab...
