Census - finding enumeration district
The street indexes used to be held by the FHC but I don't know if these have been made available online. Most of the work had been done by volunteers so it may be. You could look at the description of the enumeration district. When you click on the census you want to search in Ancestry, a list of co...

Haha, waiting until the count is at 2999 might possibly construed as cheating!

Testing New Version of Gedcom Census
Hi Nick,
I'm happy to test as well if you still need volunteers. Sorry for the late entry, I have been away from the forum for a little while.

The Niece Relationship
From the OED: 1. a. A female relative, esp. a cousin. Obs. b. The daughter of one's brother or sister; the daughter of one's brother- or sister-in-law. c. A granddaughter, or more remote female descendant. Chiefly Sc. in later use. Obs. d. euphem. An illegitimate daughter. Cf. NEPHEW n. 1b....

Uploading FH GED File to Ancestry.co.uk
I copied your gedcom file listing above into a text file and uploaded it to Ancestry and it worked with no problems, so I would guess your problem is not with the gedcom file but with a setting or permissions on Ancestry (or maybe a browser issue as Andrew above has suggested).

Template when adding records
I know this is not going to solve your problem, but I was a bit confused when you said you could not set flags from the Propoerty Dialog - confused because I think this is how I currently do it! Clicking on the 'All' tab, then either right-clicking the Name or Flags line, adding from the drop-down m...

I think it's also worth mentioning that the scans used by FreeBMD are different (and usually of inferior quality) to the ones available on Ancestry. I've had the same problem as above but have always overcome it by looking at an alternative source. I'm sure some kind soul will do a lookup for you if...

dup;icate spouses
I have version 3, so I'm not sure if there is any difference, but you could try the following: a) Make sure you have 'Show Spouse in a Separate Box' button clicked. b) If you are in an Ancestor chart, I think only the spouse relevant to the Root person of that chart will show. You may have to start ...

I love icons
I think icons on diagrams/charts are the best thing since sliced bread, I really do. But it might be getting a bit out of hand. I have flags for the 7 UK censuses, and after a recent post here, I found out that the magnificent Gedcom Census would do all the hard work for me by adding and setting the...

Shorthand way to key DATE (app)
LOL! I don't see it quite the same way, an extra click here or there isn't such a big deal to me, however you do make a good point - it could be better.
I'm glad I'm not the only one confused about why (app) instead of ABT. Is (cal) standard?

Shorthand way to key DATE (app)
Those are all available as date phrases of course.
You could also avoid typing '(app)' by clicking on the Date Helper button next to the date, and clicking the 'Approximate' radio button before typing the date. I find this preferable otherwise I end up with some odd date qualifiers too!

Posting Certificates on the Web
Thank you all for your replies; apologies it has taken a while to respond. I don't particularly want to flaunt the law, as it's probably there for a reason (as Tombaston makes clear), but also feel it is unfair to make genuine researchers of the same family line have to pay again for a copy of the s...

Yes, that's a good idea. I frequently have to zoom out and then back in on diagrams after getting a bit lost. If this was to be implemented, it would also be nice if it were possible to actually navigate using the icon (by moving the overlaid little 'box'). Again, check Google Maps for an example).

I found this tucked away in the Help: 'With the Gregorian calendar only you can optionally specify a year modifier - a 2-digit value in the second year field, following the / character. Where a date is shown in this format (e.g. 1639/40), the year after the slash indicates the year as we think of ...

I have the opportunity on my web site to post scans of BMD certificates or census pages for certain individuals I choose (dead ones only for example), and restrict the viewing of those documents only to people I have given a log-in ID to for the site (other people can view the site but not the certi...

After begging a number of relatives for family photos, I now have a growing collection of them - up until now I had very few. I'm now wondering what is the best way of using and organising these and was wondering if anyone here had any advice or is willing to share what methods they use. I know FH h...

Thanks Jane, that's cleared up what I needed to know.Jane said:
If you overtype the one on the Main tab this will replace the first occupation field, which will be the one it displayed.

Thanks both for the replies. I currently use the 'List in Order' function anyway as I prefer a list which puts all the Residences in date order followed by all the Occupations in date order - I find this easier to scan through when doing research. I have to admit this is becoming a bit unwieldy as I...

I have a follow-up question which maybe someone will be able to help me with. The 'Occupation' field on the 'Main' tab of the Properties Dialogue Box appears to auto-populate, presumably when an Occupation attribute is set. I find this a bit annoying since frequently the first occupation I set for a...

This is a bit of a nit-picking question, and I'm pretty sure there's no way to make FH3 do exactly what I want it to in this case, but I would be interested to hear what other people do. When recording a date (B/M/D), where I have a GRO Index quarter date but not an actual day, I usally enter this a...

I should add I do find it useful to add the GRO reference into the 'Where Within Source' part of the citation for BMDs. This then gives the full reference on reports, web outputs, etc., which I think is helpful.

I agree with Nick and use the same method. I suppose they are handy-to-have fields for sources where the date isn't either obvious or given in the document itself; however, for BMDs and census entries I leave it blank.

Thanks Jane, I will have a go at it tonight and see how it goes. I have been wondering how to clean up my GenesReunited data for some time now - in fact, one of the reasons I bought FH3 was because it could handle output to GR better than my last program (PAF).

Jane, would the above settings also strip place of B/M/D? I agree with your recommendation to strip everything except BMD however I would like to leave the location as well as the dates.
Thanks
Adrian

Reverse Place Names Report
Thanks Jane. I'm happy to do that for my needs, but ideally I wanted to include it as a report on my Web page output (and I'm too lazy to do that and code the html!). I'm quite new to the queries/reports elements and I just wondered if I'd missed a trick in being able to configure them in this parti...
