Re: Backup and Restore FH Settings via Windows - new plugin
The Backup seemed to work fine for me. The Restore failed with the following messages. I wasn't 100% certain what I needed to do. The plugin created a script in the Backup folder and I just ran that. Screenshot 2022-04-07 140238.jpg This is the batch file that was created: Screenshot 2022-04-07 1403...

Re: Source Title Preference
Oh, I didn't know you could do that ... I use Tools > Source Template Definitions and delete them from the pop-up windows that appears. The Tab on the Record Window didn't appear for me, although I did have one Custom Template defined. In Preferences > Records Window, I did have it set to Hide If No...

Re: Source Title Preference
I assume you do not use the autogenerated Record Title?? If you do use it, how do you get the customisation and the capitalised surname? (I do have the upper case surname option selected in the Preferences box). I don't use Templated Sources, Chrisv, I only use Generic Sources. I find them simpler ...

I actually make it 11x GG Parents, unless I've misunderstood the way it works: 1 = Self 2-3 = Parents 4-7 = Grandparents 8-15 = 1x GGP 16-31 = 2x GGP 32-63 = 3x GGP 64-127 = 4x GGP 128-255 = 5x GGP 256-511 = 6x GGP 512-1023 = 7x GGP 1024-2047 = 8x GGP 2048-4095 = 9x GGP 4096-8191 = 10x GGP 8192-1638...

Re: Help not working
Good luck with the install. Your friend was wrong, and Mike is right - Restart clears everything down, not Shutdown, even though this seems unintuitive. It is possible to change the Windows settings for this, but I wouldn't recommend that at the moment!

Re: Norfolk placename
Looks like "Nr Wotton" to me, i.e., near Wotton. There doesn't appear to be a Wotton in Norfolk today, although there is Watton, and in my experience a lot of place spellings differed in their a/o letters. Use GENUKI as suggested by Helen and see if you can tie up the location with other records abo...

Re: Restoring Settings to New OS Build
Adrian, the plugin compares the date-times of files to prevent old Backup files from overwriting later ProgramData files for the same custom item. I'm sure you would not want your latest version of a Query or Fact Set to revert to an earlier version when restoring from backups. Thanks for the clari...

Re: Restoring Settings to New OS Build
I have been very grateful for this plugin, but I would be unhappy to use it if it made unwarranted (in my view) changes to Windows System settings that had no direct relevance to the task I am carrying out. At the very least I think you would need to put a very prominent warning at the start of the ...

Would it be possible to encourage Calico Pie to incorporate a proper settings backup in their product? I find it crazy that such a highly configurable piece of software relies on the know-how and generosity of users to carry out this task. Before I came across the Backup & Restore plugin (or possibl...

Re: Recording an Inquest
Thank you all. I will do that and record the source against the Death fact. I don't know why I didn't think of that, I suppose I was thinking that it was an 'event' rather than, as Helen points out, a document. Thanks for your advice.

Recording an Inquest
I may be having a Senior Moment, but I can't seem to find a Fact/Event/Attribute for recording the details of a Coroner's Inquest. I've looked in the Fact Types dialogue box, and shown the hidden facts. Am I missing it, is it called something different, or does it not exist? If it doesn't exist, how...

Re: Customize Property Box Tabs - queries, Census, PLACes and Occupation
[6] I then wondered on the use of the Census Tab. For me it is primarily to quickly see if a census is missing, but why not extend it show all Residences. See attached. I should have put this in my last post, sorry. Yes, I use the Census tab just to see what is missing and I like a clean tab with n...

Re: Customize Property Box Tabs - queries, Census, PLACes and Occupation
[1] Is there a way to copy/repeat an item in a TAB? The best I have come up with is to Export the TAB, then use a text editor to copy/paste/amend the lines and adjust the count and item numbers etc, then reload and delete the original. I haven't found a way to copy/paste within FH, and did the same...

Re: How to add 1921 Census to list in 'Census UK' tab
You can update the Property Box custom tab yourself if you are feeling up to it. On the Census Tab, click on the Cog wheel and select "Customise Property Box...". Untick "Show most commonly used items" and select "<Custom Item>. You can copy similar options to the existing custom lines. I have attac...

Yes, I believe you have to use the paid version of Roots Magic to be able to update trees in Ancestry. You can find the comparison between the free and paid versions here: http://wiki.rootsmagic.com/wiki/RootsMagic_8:Feature_List - although, confusingly it states you can upload and download trees fr...

Re: citing prison hulk records...
I don't know if this will help if you are determined to use a templated source, but I would use a Generic Source. I'm normally a "splitter" for sources, but in this case I would use a "lumper" source I have created called Online Sources. In the Where Within Source I add the full TNA reference and su...

Re: Image sequencing
I have noticed this behaviour in other programs, for example Adobe Photoshop - where dragging multiple files into the workspace does not mean they will open in the order they are arranged in the source program (usually File Explorer). I've seen this happen elsewhere, too, but I can't remember where....

Re: Citing Sources from a Transcriptions database
Having re-read your reply, I would add that I think it is handy to attach the image as Media to the Source. If you have the database itself, obviously if you cite the parameters correctly you can duplicate the search at a later date and recreate the results. But past experience has taught me that it...

Re: Citing Sources from a Transcriptions database
The only reason I thought about putting the date into the Source title is so that if you make any subsequent searches (or you already have others) it is a way of differentiating the searches you made by having a Source and media image for each. What you say about making the citation unique makes sen...
