Is this related to the scroll bar query in this thread (at the end of the discussion)? Ancestral Sources v7.4 available to test (20653)

Re: Census Template 1861 Scotland
If this isn't the date you want to record, are you aware you can change the template? In AS, use Tools > Census Templates, select the right region and year, and change the date. Apologies if you already know this.

Re: Census Template 1861 Scotland
Hi Colin,
Mine defaults to 8 APR 1861 and I have not made any amendments or changes, so I would guess this is the template default. The English 1861 Census defaults to 7 APR 1861. I'm on AS Version 7.3.3

Re: Clearing the FH Recent Files list
Thanks for the Registry key solution Mark, worked for me. That list of long-deleted files in the drop-down has been irritating me for a very long time! (I wasn't aware of the .exe.) I don't need the plug-in but I'm happy to test it if you need it tested. Cheers.

Re: Source Template Format Definitions
I retain a healthy scepticism about the ability of organisations like FamilySearch to keep ARK type etc URLs as permanent as they would like to claim. Well, I think you're right to be sceptical about it, but in fairness to Family Search, they don't promise it will be permanent. They state: "A persi...

Re: Findmypast 1921 census discount
The easiest place to find the piece number is in the file name when downloaded - for example, GBC_1921_RG15_26454_0443.jpg is Class: RG15, Piece: 26454. As has already been stated, the RD, SD and ED will be on the Address part of the return, and the Schedule number is on the front of the return in t...

Re: How to add an unrelated individual to a 1921 census entry
Is it possible you might be thinking of the Birth/Baptism/Marriage/Death entries, where on the "Further Info" tab you can select people (ministers/priests/godparents, etc.) that are "Just a name - not in file", rather than the "Individual in file" option? I don't remember the same option ever being ...

Re: Links in Research Notes...
I have to agree with Harold, I have just actually tried inserting a "Web Link" (as CP call it in FH7) into a research note, using the format "file://D:\Documents\MySpreadsheet.xlsx" as suggested by Harold in the second post in this thread. Much to my surprise, the spreadsheet does actually open in E...

Re: Links in Research Notes...
As Mike has explained, if you add the file link into a Media tab, FH will open the file with no problem in the native application. I just tried it with a spreadsheet. However, the OP is asking about inserting a link (therefore, a hyperlink) into a Research Note, which will (I believe) always want to...

Re: Links in Research Notes...
You can do that in Chrome - the first time you try it, it will download to your Downloads folder and you can click on the down arrow in the taskbar notification and choose "Always open files of this type" - in future, the file will then open directly in Excel, Word, etc. However, be aware that the f...

Re: Links in Research Notes...
If your browser can open the file, it will do - things like text files, images, PDFs (probably) will open in a browser with no problem. Other files like Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, etc., are like to "download" to your Downloads folder, which is probably not the desired behaviour, but I don't...

Re: Placement of Diagrams in Books
Thank you Mike. I will probably use option (3). I had noticed option (1) top-down vs. left-right, etc., but I preferred a top-down chart rotated, purely as a style choice. Thanks for explaining the options.

A quick follow-up question - is it possible to rotate charts? For example, by 90 degrees? I couldn't find any means to do it, but I'm not familiar with a lot of the Publishing tools. Thanks.

Re: Backup and Restore FH Settings via Windows - new plugin
Mark, I would suggest you consider whether you need a Zip option at all. The Backup folders and files produced come to about 24Mb on my installation, and this compresses to about 5Mb. Considering the number of backups I intend to keep, this is a trivial amount of disk space. If I did want to Zip the...

Re: Census UK Tab - my take
I did wonder if the Census date box was designed for dd/mm/yyyy, but I have never used that format, just yyyy. Perhaps I should? Do what's best for you, but I would say it is good practice to capture the exact date of something if it is known. When looking at the Property Box or Reports, the Census...

Re: Census UK Tab - my take
Adrian, it doesn’t really help, as you are not showing that the 1851 and 1861 items are using different alignment groups to each other, and the 1841 item. The changes in the percent figures you show, are only effective if they use different alignment groups! Yes that's right, that's what I was tryi...

Mike, it is possible, to an extent. Did you see this in the Help about Alignment Groups? Alignment Groups There are 3 fields that relate to alignment groups. These are Alignment Group 1 (in part 1) and Alignment Groups 2 & 3 (in part 2). Each alignment group edit box must have a value in the range 1...

You might find it easier to work with the customisation inside FH, and once successful you can do some copying and pasting in the file directly to change other lines. Do you know how to do this? A quick guide: Click on the tab you wish you edit, Click the Cog in the top right ribbon, choose Customis...

Re: Backup and Restore FH Settings via Windows - new plugin
I get the feeling that the underlying theme of Mike's suggestions here is that as soon as you start down a plugin path, especially one that isn't simply running inside FH on FH data, you start to encounter all sorts of different scenarios to deal with, and differing levels of user abilities. This ma...
