Re: Display Media File Name only
A quick experiment shows that: =FindText(%OBJE.FILE[1]%,"\") will return the position of the first backslash character. You can then use MID or SECTION to grab the text you need. The difficulty for me is that my File shows multiple backslashes for directory nesting, and they have different levels, e...

Re: Find in Place List
I'm guessing the OP is using Tools > Work with Data > Places... which doesn't allow filtering in the way Helen describes as part of the Places tab, and lists the headings as Part 1, Part 2, etc.

Re: Web Clipper?
It suggests to me the problem is more complicated than just 'protection' ? I believe Windows Snip / Snipping Tool is just taking a screenshot though, not getting the original file. In fact, screen shots/snipping is the recognised way of avoiding file protection / right click protection, etc. :D I d...

Re: Web Clipper?
I had that error pop up on a quite a number of images on different sites; so much so that I decided using web clipper was more effort than it was worth. I couldn't see any sort of pattern of why they were failing, I surmised it was something to do with how the image was stored on the server, or thum...

Re: New Ancestry icon for Notifications
No, I'm pretty sure you can't switch them off. I've tried every knob, button and switch on every UI to no effect. And it is driving me insane, I absolutely hate the new bell icon. The best I can suggest, as you've probably already found yourself, is to click on it, and then quickly click again, whic...

Re: Icon Placement in Diagrams
There isn't an option that I can find to position the icons. However, my icons are and always have been left-aligned at the bottom of the box and I have never seen a screen shot where they have been anywhere else, so it's surprising they are centred on your screen. Could you supply a screen shot ple...

Re: Stories, narratives, newspaper reports
In my opinion, it's things like you are collecting that make the difference between a family history and a family tree - knowing if someone was up in court, or won a singing prize, or one of the many everyday things that happen - help add interest to an otherwise clinical list of facts. I scan the r...

Re: Source for gravestone
In my experience, a lot of FaG entries with no image seem to have been mass-copied from other sites (usually cemetery records), so the quoted date is more likely to be burial than death. You're right of course, but I would go further. A lot of information that appears to be from the picture is actu...

Re: Source for gravestone
For each headstone I find, I set up a new Generic Source and add the media to it. I do not add a date to the media item, as (especially for multiple burials) it does not make sense - you will find the headstone appearing half way through some of the people's lives in the media tab which looks very u...

Thanks, I have now voted. Considering it's 15 years old I'm not sure it will be addressed. I suppose at least I have my answer that it's not a setting that is remembered, despite the Remember Settings tick box.

Re: keeping charts when closing
Can I ask a follow-up question please? When I open a chart (for example, a descendant chart, but they all seem to behave in the same manner) they always open at 100% scaling. I am aware of the Fit/Area/Opts buttons at the top of the screen and know how to zoom in/out. However, I would like to fix th...

Re: Diagram Text Box, Age When Married
I think this depends on which Text Scheme you are using for your diagram, so try this: 1. Right click on a blank space in your diagram and choose Diagram Options ... 2. Click on the Text tab of the box that pops up 3. Click on the Edit Text Scheme ... button the right of the box 4. Find the Marriage...

Re: Help with Diagram Box Text

Mike, Can you help with a function related to these boxes please? I wish to display the first name of the spouse in a diagram box. Re: Amending Gedmatch Query (from Jane)
If the result is a string and the initial characters are always "... of", you could try using a text function to remove it:
=MidText(Record(TextToNumber(GetLabelledText(%INDI.EVEN-GEDMATCH.NOTE2%,"Shared Couple:")),"F"),7,0)
=MidText(Record(TextToNumber(GetLabelledText(%INDI.EVEN-GEDMATCH.NOTE2%,"Shared Couple:")),"F"),7,0)

Re: Media insert failed
Sometimes a file won't copy or move if the operating system thinks it is in use (whether it actually is or not). I've found this can happen if my cloud backup service is currently copying the file. Also, sometimes the file is incompletely downloaded (again, whether it actually is or not) and althoug...
