Re: Chart Box Sizes

Setting all 3 box widths to 9cm, with 'excludes pictures' ticked means the boxes without pictures will all be 9cm and those with pictures will be 12cm (9cm + 3cm picture). As far as I can see from my experiments this does work. Actually, this doesn't work for me anyway. Please see attached picture,...

Re: Chart Box Sizes

Having said that, if the pictures are indeed all exactly 3cm wide in the diagram then as far I can see you can achieve what you want. Setting all 3 box widths to 9cm, with 'excludes pictures' ticked means the boxes without pictures will all be 9cm and those with pictures will be 12cm (9cm + 3cm pic...

Re: Chart Box Sizes

Thank you Lorna, that's helpful. I have figured out that one of the uses of the Standard Box width has to do with mouse scrolling for chart scaling. If you set a large Standard size (say 99cm), when scrolling the mouse wheel the chart scale will jump from 100% to 20%. If you use a 'reasonable' size,...

I didn't mean to appear negative, I apologise if I did. I'd say I feel more neutral about it. It's great that we have people like yourself that can logically and clearly express the advantages of changes, and have the patience to do so.

Re: Chart Box Sizes

I had a further reply from Calico Pie: Hi - thank you for raising this issue. We think that what you're trying to do seems like a reasonable thing to want to do; so we will look at that. The meaning of the "excludes pictures" tick box is explained in the Help: "Specifies whether the maximum width fo...

Re: Centre align all parents in Chart diagram

Hi Ben, I think your problem here is that in the diagram with the tree background the top two layers are actually one generation stacked on top of each other. I don't think you could achieve that automatically. It also limits it to the number of generations you have in that diagram - you couldn't go...

Re: Default Surname when adding children & parents

I sometimes get the scenario where the surname of someone I'm adding will not have the same surname as Family Historian is suggesting for me. This can be for a number of reasons, some of which are captured by your options above, some of which are not. I simply type the name I want over the suggested...

Re: One niggle re creating census entries with AS...

Person of interest field will be different each time. My great-grandparents had 10 children - if I want to write about two different ones and cite the 1911 census, I would want a separate citation for each of them with each listed as the person of interest and my great-grandfather listed as HoH. I'...

Re: One niggle re creating census entries with AS...

I don't record to this level of detail, I capture the Household Schedule number as the lowest level, so excuse my thoughts if they are not correct on a solution. If the Person of Interest field is a citation-level field, a third option could be to carry on as you currently enter a census in AS, but ...

Re: Chart Box Sizes

I had a prompt reply back from Calico Pie. I have to say I'm a bit disappointed with the answer: FH was not really designed to do different sizes dependant on images ... I will pass your request up to my manager to see if there is a way I am not aware of. This was on Friday afternoon, so I will see ...

Re: Chart Box Sizes

You would think that ticking excludes pictures on Maximum box width would achieve what you want. It sort of tries but does not get it correct. The Help suggests it should do what you asked for, i.e. set the box width to the dimension for the text and then expand it when there is a picture. Thanks M...

Have you tried reducing the Minimum box width (first option) from 12cm to 9cm?
Thanks for the help, Lorna. As Mike says, it doesn't quite work, although you would expect it to. What you get is shown below, and setting the Maximum to 9cm and/or ticking the box makes no difference.

Chart Box Sizes

Can some FH genius please help me with box sizes in charts. A typical chart of mine looks similar to below. The boxes are all the same width (12cm in this case) and the photos are all the same size (3cm). What I would like to achieve is for the boxes that do not have a photo to have a width of 9cm. ...

I'm a bit of a cheat Chris ... press Windows Key & Full Stop and you get a whole list of smilies you can use ... not sure how it works if you're not on Windows though

Well actually It's at the point of downloading the image from whatever sire I'm using that I have to pick the directory and I usually click an existing file to get part of the name right and the change the year (if needed) and add the name. Been doing it so long it's not a chore any more. Thanks fo...

Re: Title Template Data References

No this isn't possible. Where is the image name coming from? Presumably you are typing that in at some point before linking in AS? So it seems to me you might be approaching it from the wrong direction. Rather than renaming the file first, let AS name the file using the image template you want to u...

Re: Census expression in diagram

That is the correct expression, as I use it successfully in my diagrams. To ask the obvious, have you actually set an icon to be displayed? I'm thinking you probably do need a standard CENSUS fact for this to work, rather than a custom fact. But you might want to check that the custom fact does actu...

I would suggest looking at the ALL tab for the person concerned, and then clicking through each line one-by-one and watching the Sources box for which sources appear. Clicking on the person's name will show sources for the whole record. Alternatively, you could find the source in the Sources Window,...

I can't answer why the Work with Data > Places screen does not function in that way, I guess it is just written differently.
