Re: autofill places

Nick said I just tried it with religion and it seems to work correctly there: when file loads up it works on most frequently-used rather than alphabetical order. So I think you're correct, the algorithm still works the same way but it is the usage counts for places that is broken. Probably related t...

Re: autofill places

I've logged a message to Martin saying that this issue was clearly raised during FH6 beta, in which context his reply is, IMHO, distinctly inadequate.

Re: Using colour in Family Historian

Call me naive, maybe, but I'm genuinely shocked to hear that FH has changed the way it stores configuration data without notifying Mike. His Backup and Restore plugin, whose functionality is perfectly well known to CP, is doing an excellent job in filling a hole that ought -- by any reasonable stand...

ONS for Dummies

I've written a few notes on the methodology I use for my ongoing One Name Study. If you're interested, you can find them at http://www.firthworks.com/genealogy/index.html, and select Research Recommendations.

Re: Setting paths to folders for backups, diags etc

Couldn't have put it better! Seven years on, FH's lack of responsiveness here is a real PITA. C'mon Simon, we appreciate that you wish to attract immigrants from TMG et all, but please, spare a thought for long-standing niggles reported by your original users.

Re: Find and Replace Places

I was perhaps over-specific in my original message. "London (Barnet), LND" was just one example of about 100 Place names changes I was attempting -- the actual Find & Replace was "), LND" to "), MDX". 100 Place names was why I didn't simply edit the Place record -- I was aiming for a short-cut. And ...

Re: New Pre-release: 6.1.1

But how can FH know that new Place record should be a clone of old Place record? It may be a very different place, that should not borrow Lat/Long, Media, or Notes from old Place. FH can't know that a clone is required. But, it's a very reasonable assumption; if wrong, the user can change it. That'...

Re: New Pre-release: 6.1.1

Yes, Mike, but it isn't intuitive. You shouldn't need to think "ah, Places names, bet that's a special case" when doing a Find & Replace. If FH has to create a new Place record, so be it, but surely it can clone that new record from the one it's replacing?

Find and Replace Places

This isn't a 6.1.1 issue -- it dates from 6.0 -- and forgive me if it has been discussed before. However... I'm unhappy about the behaviour of Find and Replace where Place records are concerned. I have, for example, a Place record "London (Barnet), LND" which is referenced by four Individual records...

Re: New Pre-release: 6.1.1

When I try to run the 6.1.1 upgrader, I get an error "The source file is corrupted" with no other information. Ideas? (Yes, I've downloaded it three times -- 15MB -- without any difference.) Later: rebooted PC (which included a Windows update), retried download and update... and it worked. Windows -...

Re: Pre-release of version 6.1

I've just noticed that the dates in the "Updated" column of the Records Window are in mm/dd/yyyy format. Surely this isn't how it used to be? Possibly a related issue: when the Map Window opens, the focus is on the USA (though I've managed to fix this). Obviously, I'm in the UK, using Windows Englis...

Re: Pre-release of version 6.1

Prior to version 6, the most used location appeared first in auto completion. With version 6, it seems to be based on some kind of alphabetical preference. So, for example, I have around 300 'City Road Cemetery' instances but only one 'City Bus Corporation' but auto complete always picks the latter...

Re: Date Filtering on Records window / Individuals tab

Thank you, Lorna, I can see where I was going wrong. Because my research focus is roughly 90% on DoB and 9.99% on DoM, I was treating the filters as applicable to the Date of Birth. When viewed as filters on life timespan, they do indeed work as intended.

Re: Date Filtering on Records window / Individuals tab

Sorry, Mike. I've tried that, and it makes just as little sense as the proper way round. Unless we're mutually misunderstanding the functionality, I think there's a bug here.

Date Filtering on Records window / Individuals tab

Sorry, folks, but I'm baffled about the From Year/To Year filtering on the Records window/Individuals tab. I've experimented until I'm blue in the face, I've searched the Help every whichway but loose, and I STILL have no idea what function these filters provide. Any guidance?

Font standardisation

First, sorry if this has been raised before -- if so, I couldn't find it. I'm perplexed about the FH use of fonts. Basically, I would expect a consistent font family to be used across the entire online interface, with some possible choice over sizes. Printed reports might value from using a differen...

Re: FH version 5 One Name Study assistance

Hello Jim, I have a One-Name Study built using FH6 (but previously FH5 - no significant differences) at http://www.firthworks.com/genealogy . Give or take, that's what a basic FH Create a Website looks like. If that isn't the style that you're hoping for, you'll need to investigate Mike's suggestion...

If I understand you correctly, all that you need to do is display the Property window of either of the two cousins, click Add Spouse/Partner then Link Existing Record, then select the other cousin from the list of individuals.

A Custom Query where the Rows expression is:

may get you started, though there are probably more elegant solutions.

Re: Overall Quality of Family Historian

I would appreciate long time users views on whether glitches such as this common throughout the substantive areas of the program? In a word, no. Lorna: Thanks for your detailed reply. I somehow never need to use Tools>Work with Data , so for me that's not an intuitive place to look for assistance. Changing place names

It seems to me that the whole business of renaming a place is more complex than it ought to be. For a start, I couldn't find anything about it in the Help. Then, the only method I could discover to achieve this is to find an Individual record using the old place name, modify that record to use the n...

Re: V6 Facts tab List in Record Order missing

How did none of us spot that before? Perhaps because the time allowed for beta testing of FH6 wasn't perhaps really sufficient for the scope of changes from FH5? Just a thought for the future.
