Adding a date to web pages

The Web Site Wizard offers an Advanced setting at Step 8 -- add HTML code to each page. It would be useful to be able to embed system data (specifically the date, though there may be a few other possible items, for example an email address) into the HTML, such that it is automatically updated as eac...

User Defined Macros

As the originator of the original thread, I thank Mike for supportively picking up the ball and running with it. Although I agree that my original concept describes a system of text-substitution macros, I nevertheless feel that the name 'user-defined functions' (UDF) is more appropriate: they should...

Struggling with an 'update' plugin

For obscure reasons associated with conveying information in an FH GEDCOM imported into Ancestry.com, I want to provide each individual with a custom BACKGROUND event, with the information in a PLACe subfield. So I thought a plugin might do the job. But I'm struggling. After much trial and error, th...

Explaining where data comes from

Yes please, Jane. I'm looking for a set of broader and more consistent data descriptions than the options you mention.

Selecting 'Focus' in the Family Records

Yes, Mike, that's right. Select the Family Records window and select a record, then click Focus button to display family. Peter: I don't see the problem. Each Family Records window record describes some form of 'family'. The Focus Window presents one or more of those families. I should generally be ...

Explaining where data comes from

I would find it useful, when constructing queries and customising column headings (and also for occasional manual edits to the GEDCOM), to be able to relate a piece of displayed data to the internal ways in which that data is identified. Let me try and explain this idea with an example. In an indivi...

Selecting 'Focus' in the Family Records

It's not quite clear to me why I can't ask the Focus Window to open on the currently-selected married couple. If I highlight somebody's Individual record, I can open the Focus window on that person and his/her spouse. How does that differ from highlighting the same couple's Family record and selecti...

Data expression for year

Many thanks, Peter. As you say, MARR.DATE:ABBREV doesn't hack it, but the expression that you provide (with a small version-related improvement) does the job nicely. But who'd have thought XDATATYPE would have provided the answer, given that its description is: 'Gives information about the type of a...

Data expression for year

In the Family Records windows, I use the expression

   FAM.MARR[1].DATE:YEAR

to show the year of the marriage. This produces a simple number:

   1850

What I'd like to see is one of:

   1850
   1850 (app)
   1850 (est)

depending on the underlying data. Possible?

Fuzzy search

Thanks for your valiant effort, Peter - I can imagine it wasn't particularly straightforward. However, the 'two siblings' example was just that - a poor attempt to illustrate the idea of a completely generalised search. Let me try again. Think of the FH Focus Window, showing the names, dates and bir...

Fuzzy search

As my database grows larger, I increasingly wish that FH supported some form of seaching which didn't demand precise values and specific records. To illustrate the general form of what I'm after, imagine that I come across a census record for John Smith living with his sister Mary. I now have approx...

Locating records by surname/first name

Sorry, folks, but I seem not to be making myself clear. If I find a family which I may (or may not) have come across before -- say Joe and Mary Bloggs -- then what I want to be able to do is to step through my Families records, moving directly from one 'Joe BLOGGS and Mary [anything]' to the next. A...

Locating records by surname/first name

In the Individual and Family Record windows, it is easy (with F3) to step through a series of records by specifying either:        surname or        surname, firstname This feature should be generalised to support also:        , firstname This would be of particular value on the Families screen, whe...

Localise config settings within projects

One of the benefits of having separate projects /should be/ that changes in one project don't necessarily affect others. Surely, that's what the XXX.fh_proj file is there for? If I sort the individual records in one project into DoB order, I don't necessarily want to find my other projects re-sorted...

Diagram alignment

Yes, of course; I already work without page boundaries unless printing. The aim here is to reduce the overall size of the diagram, this making it easier to navigate.

Diagram alignment

Currently, a FH diagram seems always to be displayed in the centre of a grey background corresponding to the number of sheets of paper needed to print the diagram. I would like to add two additional display alignment modes: Top-Left and Paperless. In Top-Left mode, the grey background remains the sa...

Thanks, Nick. Please do include Date Check -- it's a really handy feature (at least for the way that I currently work). Just that little bit more built-in savvy would make it a real time-saver. Cheers, Roger PS: if you're crafting a new version, can I vote for the ability to edit existing entries. T...

Census Date Check

When dealing with a census date entered merely as '1911', why does Census Date Check persist in proposing as replacement the date of Canada's 1911 census, despite my having set 'Most of my entries are for UK', and despite there not being a single Canadian census entry in my entire file? Surely there...
