Re: Problem uploading gedcom saved in FH 6.0 to websites
Just to confirm: it's the FH6 UTF-16 character encoding that Ancestry can't handle. Until (if ever) Ancestry supports Unicode input, you probably won't be able to upload your regular project GEDCOM; you'll have to export from FH a version of the GEDCOM specifically for the upload.

Re: Elapsed time to open a media folder
For the benefit of other users who might get caught by this Windows 'feature', I'll try to explain how it can easily happen. FH remembers the last Windows file location where you saved or opened a file. On a day-to-day basis, this is what you'd want; for me, the location I use dozens of times a day ...

Re: Elapsed time to open a media folder
Thanks to both Mike and Jane. Changing the virus scan to exclude the entire FH program folder made no difference. What DID help was Jane's query about the two dialogues, Save and Open. Essentially, they ARE the same dialogue, but when I opened the two side by side, it became clear that there was an ...

Sorry, Mike, excluding both the FH.exe and the FH project folders from on-access scans makes no difference.

Re: Elapsed time to open a media folder
It's always been the case, but my impression is that, as a folder gains more files, its FH access time increases. I appreciate that the file selection dialogue box is a standard Windows component -- that's why the time discrepancy is such a mystery. I'm displaying a List for the files. I'm protected...

Elapsed time to open a media folder
Something I do over and over again is to display a census image from ancestry.co.uk, then click on "Save" and "Save to your computer". Firefox opens the working sub-folder in my project's Media folder, where I can save the image. Having done that, I immediately switch to FH5, create a Source record,...

Re: where you are
The best method I know of, because it doesn't alter the sequence of any records, is the Standard Query (from the View menu) "Last Updated Individual Records" -- the folk you were last working on are there at the top.

Why sources being listed more than once
Just an admin question. Mike's post is timed at (03/10/13 - 15:56:09). That looks like an American date, with the time one hour in the future?

Splitting an individual
Dealing with the thousands of similarly-named individuals in my One-Name Study, I sometimes discover that I've inadvertently combined two separate folk into a single entry. Most commonly, this happens when an individual marries and leaves home, and then becomes confused with somebody of the same nam...

I'd prefer to expand Wishlist 60; I'm all in favour of combining 'similar' ideas to reduce the number of entries.

Type of personal name
I'm sure Adrian is perfectly well aware of FH's capabilities for multiple Name fields, and for Note fields. What he's asking for goes beyond that -- a formally-defined way of classifying the contents of a Name field, such that it can be consistently processed. Sounds pretty sensible to me.

Find Duplicate Individuals Version 2.3+
Following up on Jane's idea of handling first-name variants (eg Bill = Billy = Will = Willy = William = Willm.), an alternative approach might be to harness the power of FHUG itself and create our own variant database. Even if only 1% of our members participated, that's still 50 people -- enough, su...

WL#472 - Fuzzy Search
Chris, thank you for paying some serious attention to my wish for what I (obviously mistakenly) called Fuzzy Search. I think the key feature that you've maybe not picked up is the likeness to the Focus Window, in which three generations are displayed . The main point is not vagueness about one indiv...

Sprucing Up The Wishlist
Excellent work, Chris -- many many thanks for your efforts on our behalf. Now for the really hard part. I'm convinced that a wishlist of several hundred items is effectively meaningless, because very few FHUGers will have the time and motivation to even read all of those wishes, let alone vote meani...

Sprucing Up The Wishlist
So hang on a minute. Ideas have been rusting away as Wish List Requests for up to a year, waiting for... whatever, and now suddenly there's a ChrisM shortcut method that gets items onto the list just like that. No disrespect whatsoever for your efforts, Chris, but I'm a bit, er, perplexed.

The Wish List Requests folder contains a full year's worth of ideas which haven't yet made it into the list proper, and so cannot be voted upon. What is the status of these wishes in the Big Scheme of Things?

I do exactly the same as you, Diana, without any difficulty. Having signed on to Ancestry, I select Family Trees > Upload a GEDCOM , and then use the Browse dialog box to locate the file on my PC. Are you sure that you're pointing Ancestry to your .ged file in your .fh_data folder, and not to the .f...

Exporting to Ancestry
You may well not wish to trust them, but Ancestry says, apropos marking a tree as 'Public', that 'Information about living people is automatically hidden from others and is NOT included in our search index.' So it's not strictly necessary to perform an export - you could just import your entire GEDC...
