I'd half assumed it wasn't possible.

It's just that I tend to use diagrams and icons to scan visually for potentially missing info and it would mean I could go straight through to the internet matches window rather than via the focus window

The focus window for a person has a round green icon showing the number of internet matches. Clicking on it takes you to the appropriate website (fmp or My Heritage).

If you haven't already done so, try opening FH in windows safe mode as per Mike's suggestion. If FH opens successfully then it probably isn't an install problem but another programme, like BD, interfering with FH that hasn't been loaded in safe mode.
