I have various sub-folder for census images, scans of certificates, material from cover CDs and so forth but all in a top level folder which also holds my .ged file and backup directory. David, Have you worked through the example in the file that comes with FH? I mean Programs->Family Historian->Getting the most from Family Historian; the first chapter goes through a man with two wives, this may help. As to queries, I think that these take some getting used to and I would leave thos...

David, The easiest thing is to try it. The women will all appear with their maiden names in the standard diagram, and people will appear with the appropriate spouses dependent on which branch (e.g. of children) you look at. Key is arranging the order on the tabs to get the marriages lined up appropr...

if you search the forums you will find some references to the way FH makes zip files with an odd root (or something). It means that Vista (for example) can't open the ZIP file under explorer from memory.

Is this the problem with the way FH makes ZIP files in an odd way (and led me to lose some work)?
You need to open from within FH as they won't unzip under windows without a tweak that I can't remember.
I think you do File -> Backup/Restore -> Restore and take it from there.

What other software do you use for Family History?
I have been using Microsoft Office Home and Student Edition recently for the following reasons: 1) Although not very cheap, at £90 you are allowed to run it on three PCs which suits my needs for laptop and desktop usage 2) I had to give up on OpenOffice after three years as I couldn't get it to repl...

I have bought privately produced materials as part of my Family History research - where it is published it gets an ISBN number and you get to 'assert the moral right to be identified as the author of this work in accordance with the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act, 1988' This doesn't mean you ow...

I don't know about the corruption, as to the download it doesn't matter where you download (in principle) as you run the installer which sorts everything else out

I can see it would be helpful, for example when I find a cluster of ancestors in a village I tend to capture everyone with that surname on the grounds that they are likely to be linked eventually - it would help me to have a visual difference between those I know are ancestors and those I am not sure.

organizing files on hard drive
I use a piece of freeware called SyncBack SE from 2BrightSparks which allows me to synchronise a memory stick with a hard drive structure on my desktop. This allows me to work from the stick on a laptop and then recombine my work without needing to worry about copying file structures.

As I understand it the coverage is very uneven. That said I would be interested in any experiences people have of using them (and how much they spent on them)
