Cope better when Gedcom Census updates GEDCOM file
I believe Nick is awaiting the next release of FH before doing any more work in the near future. He also did post a question about the new columns in the 1911 Census so the program is definitely alive and well!

BACK UP
You might want to consider the difference between backups and archives - backups you don't need to keep, however if you make an archive you would keep it forever. You might make an archive when you have done a particular piece of work on your tree, or published a website - in this case you might kee...

I would agree with Nick - in many programming languages gone by you could inject a simple sequence such as n for new line into a print statement and have it come out correctly. Maybe rendering HTML tags is the way forward?

Adrian, I think we are saying that 5.5 compliance is a minimum standard and some of us would like to go beyond it. If a feature X existed but was marked as 'Use this and the gedcom piece is not 5.5 compliant' then those that want full compatibility can choose not to use it. We clearly all rate FH hi...

Agreed with both Chris and Jon, as long as the program interfaces to a standard that is the main thing for most uses. I know some packages worry about doing better imports when taking files from others and a lot of work can be lost if you move around, but I think we understand that in the main.

How to create a ';To do '; list in FH
I do this as well but if you want anything structured you will need a spreadsheet at the least in my opinion - I might make a list based on a flag called 'CheckatXXX' but have more detail in a spreadsheet tab where I also collect the findings before bringing them back into FH. With the new project f...

Migrating from Reunion 4 (Not Mac)
Having a google this is a common problem and yes it is a v4 gedcom problem. These people will do a free conversion to later versions of reuniuon which might be of some interest: http://www.leisterpro.com/doc/version9/questions/answers/version4.php Or someone here might have some older software that ...

I did some beta testing, I also found it: a) Expensive b) I don't like the transcription or image choice c) Search limited to two years either side d) Results list is sparse on information - for all its faults ancestry does give you more details in the results lists e)excellent quality images f) res...

Gedcom Census - 1911 (and others) - Suggestions
I like option 5 on the marriages. Regarding child count, it might be easy to point out if the living count is less different to the number of children entered though the problem of children leaving home probably renders this problematic. It would need to look at how old the marriage was and I can fe...

Citation Formats
I've been trying to follow this chain of discussion with mixed success. Is the idea that citations should be captured in a standard way and then presented in a standard way depending on the media? On browsing the web I note that the 'Evidence' approach seems to speak about both structure and present...

I just had a quick look at the web site and downloaded a copy of the beta of The Genealogy Builder which has some interesting tools for spotting mistakes in gedcom files (which I am sure I could do with queries) and also a demo of the 2009 Reporter which produced a massive (350+ page) PDF of my tree...

Extend GEDCOM as Notes
Though some people have adopted bits of 5.5.1 and a suggested GEDCOM 6 (XML) has been around for a while though no pacakge appears to support it. I suspect that 5.5 will wither on the vine if we aren't carteful, some of the other packages I have played with demos of have basic GEDCOM import (that fa...

If you want to clear all 1841 flags you could use 'Tools->Work with named lists and flags' and first use option 3 to clear all records with the flag set. If you have some records you want to keep then put them in a list first, use '3' to clear the flag from every record, then '1' to put the flag bac...

I would say it depends on how common surnames were in the locations you are looking at. I know I have extrapolated backwards and got at least one line completely wrong even in my immediate tree with moderately busy surnames. In small villages at the start of the 1800s I have found so few forenames i...

You may be stuck here - unmerge doesn't exist (it is a file not a database). Going back to backups may be the answer I'm afraid[frown]
