Transferring Data to a new computer
Might be worth noting that under Vista there is a new C:Program Data (or something similar) which is a bit obscure to find the first time, but FH puts itself in there when you install. I found this out when I was looking for the icon directory[smile]

Tools for analysing gedcom files
Jane said: The short answer QUERIES. [snip] As always before starting a merge : Do a backup. The problem with queries is you need to both be good at queries (still learning) and know you have a problem to then know to go off and find it - in a perfect world I want a super query (which maybe I shoul...

Tools for analysing gedcom files
I was wondering if anyone used any tools for analysing their gedcom files, either within or outside of FH? Due to my sloppiness in data entry (and working too long into the evening and getting carried away with enthusiasm[smile]) I appear to have made some mistakes in the entry of individuals: 1) Fo...

I saw this add - it isn't the best piece of writing form a grammatical point of view, and certainly doesn't get the meaning across correctly!

inclusion of .pdf documents in narrative report
Jane,
It isn't obvious to me how to do this with Acrobat - I have found the snapshot tool which seems to let me make images of bits of a page and then paste into an image editor. Is this the appropriate technique?

As to proof, I'll let you know when I get the certificate. The actual place of birth is pretty specific, and I have a father's name from a marriage certificate.

Not sure how widely known this is, but here goes. In searching back through my JONES line (yes not easy[smile]) I was stuck on my g2 grandfather's birth, finding no entry. General searches on JONES born in a few year period with a non-specific parish / district in a county didn't help. I then found ...

Restoring from Backup
Having been burnt by this yesterday (did a merge wrong, broke an evening's records, decided to restore and tried opening the ZIP file under XP instead of from Family Historian. It was empty which led to a surge of blind panic and immediate backups to everything I could find. I have added something t...

I can find marriage and christening for Lilian on the IGI easily enough. Searching for William Henry suggests that this has been non uncommon in Gloucester through the 1800s FreeBMD shows the marriage in Shipston The 91 census shows 9 WH Holden entries, six are sons, four are old enough to marry aro...

Record ID's - reusing numbers
At the expense of sounding pedantic, it isn't best practice to re-use record numbers - they are what is called a unique key. Although it probably hardly matters, if you had a utility that ran against the .ged file, you would be invalidating the other software if, e.g., Fred Blogs moved record number...

Families split across census pages
I file by head reference and add the images to the multimedia object on the source (easy with the gedcom census utility).
What I also found once was some children at the end of the book as an erratum to the main entry, not just on the following page.
There's no end to the variations I find[smile]

I agree, from the spacing in the sample the mystery letters appear to be close to the word in the previous column and I would guess are part of that column. Seeing the whole entry would let us know how tidy the transcribing is

As a newcomer this matches my experience and makes me wonder about costs - I just subscribed to ancestry but still find that findmypast is more accurate where it has data.

Census CDs
Thanks very much for the quick feedback - I should have mentioned that I had discounted the census sites as the county I want (Berkshire) is badly represented on findmypast which I was using with the Fmaily Historian voucher. I hadn't realised the others would hold more data. Now need to find the th...

Apologies if this has been asked elsewhere (newbie - have tried search) - has anyone any experience of commercial Census CDs? Are any recommended? Do you need to buy the index CD to get value? They look tempting - I have seen quotes for five years for £50 ish, which is a lot of look ups but would ge...
