Have you patched Vista since you loaded? I use Home Premium and have installed Service Pack 1 and my FH works fine?
Are you logged on as the same user?
Can you run FH without opening any file first? Maybe the ged file is corrupt and it isn't a Vista problem?

Not easy - are there other entries on the page that are more obvious that help you figure out the handwriting?
All I get is Tramway on the first and the odd 'Bottle Labourer' on the third!
have you the sheet reference to allow us to look up the whole page?

Where is the backup folder? Is it in the default location?
Is your user account standard? I think I run mine with administrator permissions.

Backups - general query
What I didn't explain is I keep all my sources in the same tree, and this is not just census scans but many PDFs I have bought from local family history societies , mainly parish registers. I also have some (enormous) material I downloaded from Google Books including an old Burke's peerage and a top...

Backups - general query
I keep a month or two but not beyond that as I try to keep my whole FH directory tree to under 2 GB for a USB drive (I have failed but don't back up certain large PDFs). Ideally I should keep a proper archive as well - i.e. specific backups of certain points in time when I have made key changes to m...

But website layout is actually a good way to share with family members I find, so this would answer my mother's oft repeated criticism of the family tree I send her occasionally!

What other software do you use for Family History?
Patrick, Thanks for the reply - I invested my money in Family Atlas which although not cheap has a clear function in allowing mapping of data in the gedcom file. I was worried that GRS would mean throwing away a lot of work and effectively starting again with the new tool which seems to be database ...

What other software do you use for Family History?
On the subject of other software, and in particular something more research oriented, I ran into Deltadrive Genealogy Research System (GRS) http://www.deltadrive.co.uk.
Had a quick look at the Family History Fair but as it has no demo haven't invested in a copy.
Has anyone else looked at this?

Mapping genealogical data
Just treated myself to Family Atlas at the Bracknell FH Fair - so far pretty impressed with it; the import of my FH gedcom file threw up around 100 location questions, most of which were me being sloppy so have prompted me to fix the originals in FH. I also downloaded the update which gives me the t...

In general I am also interested in the roadmap for FH - when will v4 exist for example and what will be the step change that will leave us reaching for our piggy banks?
Also what impact does the wish list actually have? I conscientiously vote on all new suggestions, but to what avail?

Question re Ancestry FreeBMD Marriage Index
I often get the spouse, or indeed several people listed male and female from which I have to do more research. I also (maybe 20%) get no further information which I have put down to the transcribing being incomplete, though your next page idea is possibly a good one. I would persevere, over a large ...

I don't think the two are connected - I would probably do the computer first if necessary just to get the benefit from more power and a final disc structure if it will run Vista. As to format, I do JPEG with little loss - I have no reduction in screen quality and am very happy. If you are doing a lo...

What happens to linked files when all move?
The addressing (for me) resolves to the root of the ged file. I have a carbon copy of the family history file structure from my C: drive which gets copied to a USB disc variously as I: on the PC and E:z on the laptop. Wherever I open the ged file I get all my links working, regardless of which machi...

Obsolete Names in File Drop Down Box
As a complete aside, some applications (eg MS Office) get round this by letting you choose how many file to show in the 'recently used file list' which would let you trim the appearance of the names (though I imagine they may stay in the registry)

I think the genealogist lost my vote as it used cookies to only allow you to work on one PC - as somebody who has a laptop for travelling research, and also looks up records at work (lunchtime of course[grin]) I couldn't work on only one machine.

Apart from ancestry, I have found familyhistoryonline to be pretty good and a ten pounds investment goes a long way. I also joined the society of genealogists as I work in London so am able to get in - this gives me the advantages of lots of parish registers rather than just one county's worth in my...

keeping census information organized for dum
Like JimBroad I tend to get census images, add the individuals to FH then move around the years. I set a ToDo flag on people for whom I have scans saved that have yet to be processed, and list the years in the main note field
