Lydia, You can insert the picture once and then link it to each person in the picture. Rather than me try to describe how to do it I could do no better than to refer you to chapter 9 of the on-line User Manual. Follow this chapter through and see how you get on. If you still have any queries then pl...

Diagram text scheme that lists downwards

Elizabeth, There is a standard text scheme that gives occupations but, as you say, the occupations are all on on line. To make each occupation appear on a separate line it is only necessary to insert a 'return' after each semicolon in the text data reference and then type in 'Occ: space' at the begi...

Names inadvertently being deleted.

Jane,
Thankyou.
I have now voted for this item. There is no description for this so I was not aware what was meant.

Names inadvertently being deleted.

If I open the property dialogue when working with a diagram, it opens in the main panel with the top name highlighted. Similarly if I am working with the property dialogue in, say, the events panel and go to the main panel, then the top name is also highlighted. If at this point the space bar is ina...

New to ancestory

Susan, Further to Jane's reply I should add that Family Historian is 100% British. If you buy it you will not also get 15 cds full of American names. FH has lots of features but as a beginner you can use it to simply record your basic info and you can explore more advanced features later if you wish...

How many Generations in a Tree

You can show the families screen instead of the individual screen and then click on the family to get the diagram. Or, using the diagram that you already have, make sure that the 'show spouses' button is pressed then left click and make a loop aroung the couple that you want to base the diagram on. ...

Jeremy, Please accept my apologies for giving you dud information. For some reason I got into my head that you were asking about DIAGRAMS when you clearly said QUERIES. The info I gave you was for diagrams. I have tried to produce what you want in a query and have so far not suceeded. Sorry for the ...

Custom Query

Jeremy,
The expression I use to get what you want is :-

born: %INDI.BIRT.DATE:COMPACT% died: %INDI.DEAT.DATE:COMPACT%

You appear to have the % marks missing in the data reference.

Hope this helps.

FH 2.3 feedback

Rachel, My internet connexion would recently often time out during the opening of a web page. The problem seems to have been a noisy connexion in the plug from the modem cable into the telephone line wall socket. In this case I was connecting via a doubling plug and this appears to be where the trou...

FH 2.3 feedback

Rachel, I always copy each FH upgrade file onto a cd so that in the event of a computer problem or internet problem, I can always re-install FH and bring it up to date with the latest upgrade even if I cannot connect to the internet. That is the theory but I have never had to upgrade FH from the COP...

Birth Registered Twice??

Karen, I have experience of the same birth being listed twice in the GRO index. The child is George and on the certificate I have his father as Thomas Simmons and his mother Charlotte Taylor. The birth is indexed under both Simmons and Taylor with the same reference for both. The date of birth is 18...

Source Assessment

Phil,
I mark a BMD certificate or census page source as primary. If the info is from someone else (say the source is my aunt) I mark it secondary and if it from the IGI or is a BMD index where I do not have the certificate, then I mark it questionable.

If I understand correctly, you are saying that it is possible to show a married couple in the same box in a diagram. This is new to me. Would you please explain to me how it is done.
Thanks - Peter E

Charlotte, Go to 'reports' then to 'individual summary report'. You will then be presented with the record selection pane. In the left hand panel highlight the person you want and then press the > button to transfer that person to the right hand panel. Then press 'ok' and your report will appear. Wh...

I don't know if this is what you want, but, page 89 of the user manual [Link to other GEDCOM files] describes how you can link two GEDCOM files together. I have not tried this myself however.

Storing info offline

I have tended to print out family group sheets but as I have 280 families and each family group report could use up to 6 pages I realised that a lot of paper would be required and so I have not printed any for a while. If I were to print Individual summary reports for my almost 1000 individuals the ...

Given Names, Nicknames, etc.

Mike, I would use 'nickname' as you have suggested, for something like 'Ginger' etc. If someone usually uses their middle name instead of their first name then I would put this in 'name used'. Where someone has changed their surname I enter the second surname in the 'alternate name' box with a sourc...

Mary, To make the 'text from source' print out in an individual or a family group report you must go into 'options' when you have your report showing. Then click on the 'sources' tab and then tick the box marked 'text from source'. This should do what you want if I have understood you correctly. Pet...

Tessa,
What you have is correct. Version 2.2.4 changed the second note field in the Property dialogue to Spouse's place of death. The manual still shows the state prior to version 2.2.4.

Birth Certificates

Earlier full birth certificates did not give the surname of the child, just those of the parents. I think that the childs surname was added to the certificate some time in the mid 1900s. I have a birth cert for an illegitimate child born in 1857 and the certificate is listed in the GRO index under b...
