The Guardian Guide to Family History

One of the reasons that I decided on FH when looking for a software package was that FH was British and did not come with a load of useless extra CDs listing millions of American names that bear no relevance to my research. I have had FH since the first version and have no inclination to try any com...

Record ID's - reusing numbers

If you just want to close up the record IDs you can do this by going to 'Tools' then 'work with record identifiers' then select the record type that you want to adjust the IDs on, then make sure that there is a dot against 'generate new record ids by re-numbering records, starting from 1' then press...

I have a custom event 'marriage witness'. When I enter the event in the individual's property dialogue I add a note in the note section below the address space saying 'Marriage of John White/Mary Brown' or as appropriate. I then use the following template - {individual} was a {label} {date}{place} f...

scaling diagrams to suit different page sizes

Hello , If you press the 'show page boundaries' button when viewing your diagram and then put the cursor on the corner of a page a little cross will appear in place of the arrow cursor. If you then right click you can drag the corner out or in to increase or decrease the size of the page and so make...

Changing Counties

I have many instances like this where places in Middlesex become London from 1889.
I always record them as they were at the time.

Most parish records are now kept by the relevant County Record office. It is always worth phoning before a visit to make sure that the office has the records you are wanting.

Does anyone know if National Archives plan to make the 1911 census available on-line as they have with the 1901 census?

V3 - worth the upgrade?

Richard,
The extra diagram features eg the ability to move branches, or to add whole trees to a diagram can be very useful as are the 'flag' and 'icon' features. I am glad that I got the v3 upgrade.
Perhaps it would make a good Christmas present for someone to give you? [smile]

Properties dialogue bugs

On the subject of losing data: If a property dialogue is brought up, say by double clicking on the name in the individual record, the person's name in the property dialogue is highlighted. If at that point you inadvertently press the space bar the name is deleted and you may not notice. This also ha...

I guess that many of you are subscribers to Ancestry but for those like me who are not subscribers it is still possible to use Ancestry. Text box date entry

Hi all
Is there a data reference that I can insert into a text box in a diagram that will output the current date? Or is this one for the wish list.
I have tried to search the wish list before posting this but that seems to be unavailable at the moment.

The following link is for a website that allows you to enter a surname and to see the relative instances of that name that existed throughout the country in 1881 and 1998. It can help to get an idea where a surname originated. And it is free [grin] Peter E http://cetl2.geog.ucl.ac.uk/uclnames/defaul...

Becky, Yes I add the event time as a note. For the marriage witness I have created a custom event 'marriage witness' and I add this event to the witness adding the place and address of the church and, as a note, the names of the married couple. As a source for this marriage witness event I use the m...

What about downloading the free PAF programme from the LDS site. If you could then copy that to a cd you could give that to your neices. The only problem with PAF is that you cannot print out diagrams using the free version.

How do you file your family history paper work?

Andy, I have about 1500 people on my tree and I have not really worked out an effective paperwork filing system. I think you could use ADD IF 'contains text' for your filter. In other words 'contains text' is the opposite of 'is null'.

If I have the certificate then that is the source and I would put the GRO ref in the 'where within source' slot.
