Help finding Parish Records
Anonymous, You don't say where you live. If you are able to visit London, the Society of Genealogists library does have some transcripts of registers for Trelleck: [Book] TRELLECK (St. Nicholas) : C 1696, 1725-1808 (BTs), M 1696, 1725-1800 (BTs), B 1696-97, 1725-1800 (BTs): Monmouthshire bishop's tr...

Marital status on census
Nick,
Thank you for your suggestion.
I'll continue to put a note in the source record for the person listed as a widow, then put a date of death with a 10-year range for the spouse until I find their actual death/burial details.

Marital status on census
Is there a way to record the Marital status from Census entries via Gedcom Census? I don't usually record this for single/married people, but I do find that it is useful to record this information where the person concerned is a widow/widower, as it is often found from using this information that th...

Use of Certificate Binders
I have started to use separate folders for each of my grandparents, and put the certificates into the appropriate folder.
That way, it is easier to browse all of the documents for one side of the family, and makes it easy to show them if a relative comes to visit.

Jane,
Have you tried using Ancestry in the new Firefox 2.0 - I have recently upgraded my Firefox browser, and some sites that didn't work in the old one are fine in 2.0
Personally I now use Firefox for everything unless a specific site doesn't load properly.

Mike, Bad news, I'm afraid. Under current legistlation, you can only view the details of a BMD certificate in England & Wales when you purchase a certified copy from the GRO or local register office. (£7) The only information you will find available online are the indexes to enable you to purchase t...

I have found several occasions where the baptism entry also records the date of birth. If you are really lucky, the entry will be written in Dade style - this system was common in Yorkshire for a time. This also lists the mother's maiden name and also the names and parishes of the fathers of ther pa...

David, Most of the government records would be held at The National Archives at Kew. How much personal info is included in them would vary. I don't know about pension records at Kew. The Post Office pension records in the Postal Archives contained full service records and personal details, but only ...

I use the 1837online - it is quite good. you have to remember that the BMD records are not searchable before 1983 - you can only open the images of the indexes of that surname for each quarter, so if you are doing a long search, you may need to open a lot of images. For a long search, I still prefer...

Is there a correction on the certificate?
I have come across instances where something has been corrected, with a raised number aginst it. In these cases, on the margin of the certificate there will be a signature against that number to show it was an authorised alteration by the registrar.

I found several occasions where ither the surname or place of birth was spelt incorrectly by either the ennumerator, or the Ancestry transcription. I found several people by just putting in the first name, place of birth (or county) and age to within 2 years - often a name comes up with a surname wh...

I have just visited several graveyards and now have digital photos of number of gravestones of people on my tree. In many cases, several people are listed on the same gravestone, so I need to link the gravestone details to all of the relevant individuals. What would be the best way of entering this ...

I used Gedwise on a Palm tungsten E which is very good. Gedwise does not allow you to amend the data, but I prefer to update it in FH on the PC once back at home. It is very easy to transfer the Gedcom file from the PC into the Palm.

Jane, Thank you for that - I have now uploaded the query. It seems to run OK, but misses some second marriages. the selection at the start prompts for the date range. at the FRC (and elsewhere) you can only view the GRO indexes, not the entries themselves without purchasing a certificate. if you find likely entries, it will tell you whiat the local registration district is. In the local regster offices, the local marriage indexes are arranged by each church - you...

The Society of Genealogists hold similar submissions of family pedigrees in their library for others to view.
I believe that they film these onto microfiche for searching within the library.
If you contact the SOG Librarian, she will be able to advise you.

have you tried their marriage certificate to see what name is used there (if they married) ? one person on my tree was baptised as Emily, but the GRO index has the birth registered as Amelia. On childhood censuses she is listed as Amelia, so assumed the vicar misheard at the baptism. Anyway, I got h...
