Greenwich & Plumstead parish registers & electoral registers etc should all be available to view on microfilm in the London Metropolitan Archives, near Farringdon. Which part of Yorkshire do you need? the records are all over the place, depending on which area you need. Pre-1858 yorkshire wills & ma...

Mark, If you are near London then it will probably be worth joining the Society of Genealogists. Non-members can use the library, but have to pay to enter. They are open on Saturdays. Their library is near Barbican tube station, and contains a large number of microfilms of copies of parish registers...

finding missing family members in the census
I had one case where on every census the wife is with the children - no sign of the husband. She was described as a Butler's wife, so he was obviously with the family he worked for on census night. Only by getting the birth certificate of one of the children did I find out what his name was, and the...

Cataloguing/Archiving the real things - how?
For storage purposes, it is convenient to group together items of a similar size or type, as they will take up less space that way when stored in boxes, and you can also get out the file of birth certificates, etc in one go. Most archives give items a series/group number then a piece number within t...

Age in weeks
Nick,
I have just found an instance in the 1891 census where the age of the youngest child is expressed as 3 weeks - I had to adjust this to 21 days to enter it via gedcom census. Is it possible to add an additonal 'w' option for the ages?
Many thanks,
Jeremy

David, I have got Gedwise software installed on my Palm device. The prgram is also installed onto the PC, and it autmocatially copies the Gedcom file over each time the PDA is connected to the PC, and all of the data can then be read on the PDA (it is read-only, but useful for lookups when you are i...

Question re Ancestry FreeBMD Marriage Index
If the area you want is covered by UKBMD - e.g. Leeds mrraiages are almost complete up to 1950, then this site does show the names of both bride and groom, and also the name of the church/register office. For church weddings this allows you to then look up the relevant parish registers at the Record...

Find - to allow AND/OR and also by whole word
Searching for distinct phrases in Quotes should be supported, as should boolean searches (AND/OR/NOT) and NEAR - all these are supported by searches in Google, etc.

Have you checked the National Burial index or local FHS burial index for that area to see if it provides any clues?

Besides transcription errors, I have got several instances where the birth placename was spelt wrongly by he enumerator - presumably he didn't understand their Shropshire/yorkshire accents. Also, some of the entries have the wrong birth county written down by the enumerator, so If I don't find what ...

Surname when widow is head of household
Nick, If I create a new census record in Gedcom Census 5.3, where a widowed female is the head of the household, the autotext carries through her maiden name as her surname. Is it possible to get it to use the surname of her last husband? Ideally, it should also identify the married status of Widow ...

Steve, Is it worth tracking down the marriage details of the step-father - this should give the details of Joe's Mother. Obviously if it is a common name, it may take some looking for, but if you have a known occupation & location, etc, the local register office should be able to make a match for yo...

I have found quite a few families where the surname, or place of birth etc are incorrectly spelt on the census. This is particularly the case with the indexing of the 1901 census. Try searching for one of the person in the family with the most unusual firstname. Omit the surname, but include approx ...

David, I take it that the 2 Catherines are definitely the same person? Birth Certificate
My GG Grandmother's birth certificate does not mention a father, and she is registered in 1862 under the surname of her mother. However, she was also registered with a middle name which was she same as the surname of the man her mother married some 10 years later. When he died, his will acknowledged...

You can also get some Census CDs from Archive CD books - mainly 1841 and 1861. Their scans are generally of high quality, though they generally are not indexed/searchable other than basic OCR & browsing by piece/folio no. They do allow you to purchase a CD covering one specific piece number, so you ...
