=factowner()

Yes, Jane, I've also found this problem, which also affects the =GetField() function.  I wonder if this is a bug, or an undocumented limitation - there is no syntax error.

Loss of Pictures

The 'Work with External File Links' window never shows the pictures, but does show the names of multimedia files for which links exist within your GEDCOM file. If such links are 'broken', an 'X' appears beside each filename in this window.  It is quite simple to move or re-map the links, usually for...

Data Entry exit

Some fields, e.g. Notes, Addresses, Text from Source, and Actual Text, can have multi-line entries, and can be used to start a new line.  The arrow keys will often be needed (especially if not using a mouse) to correct data within a field.  NB: saving of data to disk happens only when you save manua...

Links to photos - difficult to change

Fergus, The links have changed, but still do not match the actual folder structure on your new PC. In the 'Work with External File Links' window try highlighting the 'FH-photos' folder and then click the 'Move...' button.  Then, in the pop-up window showing the actual folder structure, click on your...

Peter,
The Query window menu has an option to delete the current custom query, which is probably the safest method.

Links to photos - difficult to change

Fergus, I hope I can help by expanding on what Jane suggested. The 'Work with External File Links' window shows that the links in your GEDCOM file were made when your 'Family Historian' folder was within your 'Family Trees' folder; that folder structure was on your old PC, but not on your new PC, wh...

Hi Nick, I've just added the Census of Ireland 1911 to the FHUG Links page: http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi?action=linkinfo&cat=Resources&id=23 I presume you may already have all the relevant details, or can download them yourself, but I could send you a few PDFs if you let me know. Editing a Query

Peter,
What I would do is have as first filter:

Add if %SOUR.TITL% begins with 'Bir'

Then add a 2nd filter thus:

Exclude unless %SOUR.TEXT% is null

This seems to work for me. Or your 2nd filter could be:

Exclude unless =IsEmpty(%SOUR.TEXT%) is true

which also works.

First time to try a query

If you haven't already, you will probably find it helpful to work through chapters 13 and 14 of Getting the Most From Family Historian 4 available via the Help menu. You should probably add columns for your Flag and for (Local) Note and Note Record (both of which appear on the Notes tab). Filters (o...

Ancestors amp; Descendants Diagram

Yes, this is standard behaviour, but it is not obvious why the Descendant Diagram shows only the Root plus the Root's spouse(s) and descendants, while the Ancestor and Descendant Diagram shows also the Root's siblings, together with their spouses. However, there is a Diagram Option on the General ta...

Sorry, but Fact Queries are one of the new facilities introduced in Version 4.  I think it's possible to use V4 in the same way as V3, e.g. by not using the Focus window, and by using the V3-compatibility version of the Property Box, and by not adopting the Project concept (unless you wnat to Make a...

I am sure it is perfectly obvious....

Welcome to FHUG! If you are new to FH, I would suggest working through the tutorials in 'Getting the Most From Family Historian 4' (available via the Help menu); chapter 12 deals with recording your sources.  There is also a helpful entry on Sources in the FHUG Glossary: http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/...

1. I believe Jane's Custom Query (linked above) works only if the specified Source is the 1st or only source for the relevant Fact. This problem has surfaced before: http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi?action=forum&board=v4use&op=display&num=4011 2. Somehow the link to Jane's Custom Query is sh...

Accented charaters

The following web page lists many accented and other special characters that can be entered by holding down the ALT key and typing 0nnn (using only the numeric keypad) then releasing the ALT key. FH seems to handle such accented characters OK, and shows the accented capital letter if a surname with ...

Many thanks for this Jane, by which I mean your recommendation of PSPad as an editor (but I doubt I'll ever get to grips with all its capabilities) as well as your most useful PSPad extensions for FH Functions, and of course your How-To instructions, which I was able to follow easily once I read the...

General consideration of the effect of name change

I agree with Gerry, above, that to display an Individual's record multiple times in the Records window just because they are known by different names in different contexts or at different times is likely to be too confusing for most users.  For instance my father Kenneth James Richmond was always kn...

There is another Wish-list item which may be relevant: 59 - Address management like that for Places , but to which I added the following comment: I can see why auto-complete and a system like Tools > Work with Data > Places could be useful for the Address field, but I can see several complicating fa...

FH version 4 allows you to output a separate row for each attribute value resulting in potentally many rows per person, provided you use a Fact Query.  I've just uploaded a simple example which may help:

Families Tab

I thought perhaps the slightly different behaviour on the Families tab is deliberate because unlike all other record types, a family has not one but two identifying (linked) names, either of which may be missing altogether or unknown. This means that the 'appropriate place' is not as obvious as on t...

I just tried saving a diagram, with scaling set to 75%, as a FH chart.  Then I closed and reopened FH and opened the saved chart.  Guess what - the scaling was still 75% BUT the zoom was 77%, which I was not expecting.
