Supported graphics formats
I had no idea, so I converted one of my JPEG images to TIFF and selected LZW compression. I then added the new multimedia object to the relevant individual, and FH now displays both versions apparantly quite happily.[smile]

Marriage Sources and Citations
Ric, You are of course free to add source citations to as many records (e.g. Individuals) and/or 'fields' (e.g. Occupations) as you like. I would do whatever you find useful, and suggest that it is best to adopt a consistent approach throughout your tree. There are numerous approaches to the use of ...

Diagram colours and background
Phil, FH has many facilities you can use to control font and colour of text, and shape and background of boxes. These are covered in Chapter 7 of Getting the Most From Family Historian (for V3) and in Chapter 9 of Getting the Most From Family Historian 4 (for V4) each available via the Help menu. Yo...

Marriage Sources and Citations
Ric, You may wish to avoid 'over-egging the pudding', but I think the following are all possible, but by no means required - up to you how much detail you record. If your Source (2) includes all the text, then in some cses it may help to repeat just the relevant portion of the text in each citation;...

Media links on census events
I believe that media such as census images are best attached to the corresponding Source record (e.g. by Gedcom Census) since this provides the same link to the image from the Individual's Census Event for all relevant Individuals, via the Source Citation. I have many examples where family members i...

V4 - ETA for bug fixes
Quite a few were fixed on 12/05/09 in v4.0.1 which is not yet officially released, but available for download from http://www.family-historian.co.uk/downl ... _4.0.1.htm and the installation on top of V4 couldn't be simpler.[smile]

Adding media
I think Peter E's issue is that if you open a different project P2 and add multimedia, FH4 goes to the same folder as used previously for project P1, not to a folder which is part of the folder structure for project P2. I suppose the problem is that FH4 doesn't know which folder to default to for mu...

I believe v4.0.1 is not yet formally released, and so not found automatically or advertised on the website. SimonOrde's post part way down this page: http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi?action=forum&board=v4use&op=display&num=3607&start=60 explains where you can find it, and the Learn More link...

how do I set an icon using a function
Graham, You can find Jane's excellent FHUG Flag Tutorial via the How To's menu which can take you to Using Flags and Icons here: http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:using_flags_and_icons There is also a link to information about Gedcon Census, which I would strongly recommend. Bernard, One possibility is that the file for the demo version is simply too big to be emailed as an attachment. Many email systems set a limit, and although they are bigger than they were, you may still be exceeding such a limit. Why not just send an email to your son containing the relevant link s...

Upgrade path for eventual V5
I certainly agree, and would vote for such a wish-list item. My upgrade to v4 was straightforward because I already had V3 on the required laptop. But I expect that by the time V5 is ready, I will be moving to a new laptop and would not relish digging out all the original installation and intermedi...

Free Upgrade
With FH you can use the Add menu or the Records Window to add Sources whether or not you have added any Individuals. You may even care to first add Repositories before adding whatever Sources they hold. FH is very flexible.[smile]

=Relationship() function - consistent output
Currently (FH v4.0.1) it appears that 'once-removed' is hyphenated only for 1st cousins. I agree that more consistency would be an improvement, although personally I'm not bothered that just 'cousin' is used for '1st cousin'.

Perhaps this has been at least partly overtaken by the introduction of the 'Project' folder structure in FH4?

I would certainly find it useful if the current or an additonal (FH4 onwards, obviously) Notes tab on the Individual Property Box could show appropriately labelled Fact/Event Notes, as well as the Individual's Local Notes and Note Records.

Hi Paul, This is looking a bit like a 'super-set' of Jon's suggestion at http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi?action=forum&board=WishList&op=display&num=3531 . Merge/Compare is already available on the Edit menu if you highlight the two individuals on a diagram; but only the last two highlighted...

PyreneesPirate,
While I have some sympathy with your frustration, is there any reason why you cannot at least make a start by entering your data using your FH3 installation? The data will then be in your Gedcom file ready for FH4 as soon as the upgrade arrives.

I quite agree with Steve's and Nick's comments above. FH3 was a great program, and FH4 is even better, in many, many ways. And now v4.0.1 (the patch couldn't be quicker and easier to run, by the way) already brings no less than 8 worthwhile improvements, including the few bug fixes. Well done Simon...

Greeting and Gedcom question
Hi Brian,
It is my understanding that the only place that FH keeps your data is in your Gedcom file. If you provide a new Gedcom file for FH to load, the only data it uses will be that in your new Gedcom file. Your old Gedcom file can be ignored or archived, whatever you prefer. Hope this helps.
