V4 Upgrade Crashes - Help Please
Paul White said: Please get me out of this appalling mess. Well i tried Jane's suggestions, sadly without result, so got down to checking out all the running processes. To cut a really long and boring story short, my laptop graphics card is by SiS Corporation and one of the utilities is called keyh...

V4 Upgrade Crashes - Help Please
Several weeks ago i downloaded the trial V4 to 'upgrade' V3. As you'll note from my subsequent posts, i wasn't very happy about property box behaviour and focus changes after switching applications. These shortcomings were important enough to me to cast doubt on the wisdom of upgrading and i hesitat...

What other software do you use for Family History?
RalfofAmber said: On the subject of other software, and in particular something more research oriented, I ran into Deltadrive Genealogy Research System (GRS) http://www.deltadrive.co.uk. Had a quick look at the Family History Fair but as it has no demo haven't invested in a copy. Has anyone else lo...

Property Box loses focus
Pipped to the post again by bloody Jon!!!
If i got to bed a bit earlier, i might get up in time to deal with the morning post!
100% agree about interim bug fixes (and don't ever let a developer get away with calling them usability issues or whatever)

Property Box loses focus
Chris, i use the property box docked. Then app switching sets focus to the diagram window (not that there's anything much to show the fact, other than loss of the property box cursor). I agree that, undocked, the property box retains focus, but (in general) cursor moves to start of last focus field....

Export to Ancestry
Why can't i have clear-cut rules for what Ancestry accepts as a 'valid' GEDCOM, and why won't FH give me a suitably clean export function? The only advice i've ever seen in this regard is to chuck out all notes, flags, custom IDs, user-defined tags, change dates, and anything else not invented befor...

Date Entry
After all this time there must be a jolly good reason why FH still insists on having a space between day number and month name.
It copes OK with no spaces in the rest of the string, so what's different here?

Diagram Window Refresh
Does anyone else have to use the menu selection W indow Re f resh to update the Diagram Window? A long-time irritation is the need for a mouse action (or fiddly Alt/W, F) when the function key F5 is a Windows standard. This would not conflict with FH's use as a Propertty Box 'validate' function. ID:...

Records Window - Find in Diagram
From the Records Window in V3, Ctrl/H would zip straight to the matching record in the current Diagram Window. Now V4 brings up a Select Records dialog box. What is the point of this? To complete the action, i now need to mouse-click OK. Can we revert to V3 behaviour? Otherwise give me a Records Win...

I've been trialling FH4 for a couple of days and already wonder if it's a good move for me. When using FH i am constantly switching applications (Ancestry, IGI, etc), collecting data and typing into FH. With my way of working, FH is almost always showing the diagram window and property box (ready to...

Yes, Peter, I agree Jon's idea is a good one. With a bit of thought there are probably lots of different productivity aids we could dream up for diagram-based editing (which is 90% of my activity). Let's all agree that V4 was Simon's super response to the needs of form-based editing, and that V5 wil...

Don't forget about local Family History societies and the like. Do a Google on Dorset OPC and you'll find an absolute Aladdin's Cave of information. The Isle of Wight has put online the local equivalent of FreeBMD, BUT ALSO giving the mother's maiden name (well, Other Name). Sites like these are a r...

Jane, Alan White made the point on 12 Jan that most other software includes exactly the sort of authentication that's at issue here. Accepted that Simon may have other priorities, but it's a widely-shared irritation that will get worse with time, not go away.

linking unlinking records
Hi, robacis, nobody has responded yet and i wonder why. I guess you really mean it's the re-linking bit that's the real problem (*although* one rather nice refinement would be to unlink via a right-click on the individual in a diagram!). As for re-linking, well for starters i never do this in the re...

Calico Feedback on Wish List Requests
Is it only me, or do others find it annoying that Calico doesn't reply with a plan (or otherwise) for each item accepted onto the Wish List? I'd like to see a column containing 'the plan' on the Wish List contents page as well as at the *top* of the thread itself. It could say, for example: - fixed ...

I think you've got a good system, Jan, that obviously works well for you. To be honest i'm too disorganised to maintain several systems and try to keep everything in just the one place. Re. associated person, that's one of my gripes, i'm afraid. It's too invisible. I'd like it to show up automatical...

Diagram Hot-link to Multimedia
Add an icon to diagram boxes to represent linked documents. Make it 'hot', so clicking will open the tsarget. Preferably allow the target to be a selected position (field) within e.g. an MS Word document. Even better, for images show a captioned gallery of thumbnails. http://www.fhug.org.uk/wishlist...

Suspected Identity Relationship
Doesn't happen too often, but when it does... I had 2 Williams in different parts of the tree, and a suspicion they were the same (so at least one of their relationships was probably mistaken). Also had an anonymous father, but an idea it was the eventual husband, or some other relative. Would like ...

I know this is a bit cheeky, but that's rather like having a set of normalised tables in a relational database, compared with one great big spreadsheet. Still, i certainly get the point guys and gals, so thanks for all the reaction. Probably feel a lot more in tune with your approach when i've got m...
