Microsoft

I think it may be a little harsh to blame Bill Gates for this entirely. My understanding is that FH itself stores all current settings to the document and settings folder, so any query that you have active within the program will show up there. I always back up the documents & settings folder as wel...

Families split across census pages

I do exactly the same. It seems much more sensible (and less work!) to keep the family together under the correct reference for the head and to link both images. I also often come up against the opposite situation - more than one relevant household on the same census page (especially in small rural ...

Odd narrative phrases

If you go into Tools|Work with Factsets and click on the 'Show Hidden' button you should see your imported events/attributes. If you double click on each one you will be given the opportunity to place them into a Factset and you will then be able to define a new sentence structure.

Married two sisters

It was illegal until 1907 (see Nick's post above) but was the subject of great controversy in Victorian times. The law doesn't seem to have stopped people doing it, but sometimes they took precautions. My great great grandfather married his dead wife's sister but did so under a different name and in...

How to interpret this cause of death

Multimedia Type

I suspect that a problem might be that the 'Type' field is already used by the program to categorise as a document, picture etc, (something that I must confess I don't ever use). I suppose a work around would be to use the custom ID field, but there you would have to enter the text every time instea...

Query and named lists

It's the rightmost icon on the Query toolbar; it looks like a sheet of paper with a large red tick in the bottom left corner.

Probate question

I've no experience of this myself but found the comment below regarding pre 1858 probate on this web page: http://www.mlfhs.org.uk/Infobase/Begin-Wills.htm 'Although the majority of wills were proved within a few months of the testator's death, there was no pressure to do so within any particular ti...

Cause of Death

Prior to 1874 a doctor's certificate was not required in order for a death to be registered. I have a number of death certificates where the death is not certified, but none where the cause is unknown.
