Jane,
I'd love to try it. Anything that stops me grinding my teeth in frustration as I have to look up the correct syntax for a function for the nth time would be wonderful.

Census in England and Wales
Well, the RG in census references refers to 'Records of the General Register Office, Government Social Survey Department, and Office of Population Censuses and Surveys', so I guess it's them.

ItemIf function not working?
I can't get the ItemIf function to work at all in queries. For example, trying to set a column to =ItemIf(%INDI.SEX% = 'Male',%INDI.SEX%,%INDI.SEX%) returns an error message. I know it doesn't do anything meaningful, but it should work, shouldn't it?. [BTW I've also tried =DataItemIf() which is what...

Agreed, that's one of the first things I did when I got v4. And, of course, you can set/unset the flag status from the window too.

I should also add that if I then go into the work with file links dialogue, files in the same directory appear in one of two separate directories depending on whether the link has been edited, either C:......Media... or Project Data FolderMedia... I suppose that the dialogue will at least make it ea...

Another multimedia issue
Don't want to seem a grump, but ... When I set up my project in v.4 I let FH copy all my files into the Media directory as recommended (something I'm now regretting, but that's another story). It seems to have set up all the file links with an incomplete path starting at the Media sub-directory. Whe...

Thumbnail View Issues
I've noticed that FH appears to build thumbnails at launch as Jane points out in another thread. However, the last time I loaded my main project there was a broken link to one multimedia record (I'd renamed a file externally) and an X in the thumbnail box. I repaired the link by directly editing the...

Thanks for that. Unfortunately, it means that my wife, who said it was something to do with laundry blue, will remind me that she was right for days. [smile]

Blue Packer
I have a relative who is described in the 1911 census in Hull as a 'Blue Packer'. (Be warned, googling this without any filters throws up lots of porn sites). I've only found one relevant reference which suggests it may have something to do with the paint industry. Has anyone heard of this occupatio...

As Rusty says, it's a matter of personal preference. I use [square] brackets. If you do use brackets, make sure there are no spaces within them or FH will parse the name incorrectly.

Ancestry strikes again!
The 'new' births index is still there. I always find it quite difficult to navigate through all the ever-changing database options on Ancestry but what seems to be happening (at least to me) is that if you click on the option to search 'Birth, Marriage & Death Indexes [sic]' on the home page, you ge...

1911 Census
Following on from Nick's search tip, I found this on another forum. I does the same sort of thing but gives you an address in the process. Using the standard search function, find the person you want and refine the search criteria to eliminate the others so that only that one person is on the page. ...

Ancestry strikes again!
A point that seems to be being ignored here is that the new database has been indexed and is searchable, a major advance. I found my own birth immediately. A downside does appear to be that there is no longer any option to trawl through the pages as before, so, if an entry has been mistranscribed, i...

1911 Census
To be fair, the 1911 census blog actually says 'The first day (midnight to midnight) of the release of the 1911 Census went very well - we served up 3.4 million searches and 17.4million pages to 645,000 visitors who made 827,000 visits between them'. That could mean that 3.4 million searches gave li...

I must be lucky as I've come across no (serious) transcription errors so far. Perhaps my ancestors all had good handwriting! In general I agree with the comments about cost and interface although they only have a limited time window to recover their costs (and, presumably, turn a small profit [smile...

(1) should probably just be put in the note to the source as there isn't a standard attribute that covers it and it is probably a relatively rare occurrence. (2)I suspect different people would want this handled in different ways. I try (not very successfully) to keep to a relatively small number of...

You could try the British Library Newspaper Collection website at http://www.bl.uk/collections/newspapers.html and search the catalogue by place name. The main local newspaper for Falmouth was and is the Falmouth Packet: http://www.falmouthpacket.co.uk/ or for wider coverage, the West Briton. There ...

Cess, cease or sesse is a (possibly) obsolete word for a tax or rate. It is a corruption of the word assess.

I always try to stick with one birth event based on the most reliable source. If other sources differ I still cite them but add a local note to the birth event stating how they differ.

I create a source for each will/probate document with a linked multimedia object (usually a pdf created from a scan of the document(s). For example: [S1353] Probate (Dagless, Thomas 1852) Title: Probate (Dagless, Thomas 1852) Type: Will/Probate Publication Information: Probate of Thom...
