Hi Hannah
Yes that's the idea of Auto-text. Gedcom Census fills it in using some very basic rules and then you edit it to make it match the actual census transcript.
Thanks for the kind words
Nick

Surname when widow is head of household
I could do that but it would take a lot of extra work as Gedcom Census doesn't currently make note of death or burial information or indeed marriage facts. I'd then need to sort all the marriages into date order, deal with marriages where no date recorded. Make note of burial, cremation, death dates...

Research experiment - what is this name?
It is difficult to see what else it could be, it certainly seems to start with Thu. Of course the census enumerator back in 1851 may have misread the census forms before transcrbing them or misheard the name said to him.

Surname Spelling
My opinion is that the spelling of names isn't particularly important. Most of our ancestors before the latter half of the 19th century couldn't read and write and so the way their name was spelt was down to the interpretation of the church minister, registration clerk, census taker, etc. For exampl...

Source images per row in web page
I think this might have changed with version 3.1. The version history says: Source pictures used to have to be displayed to the right of source listings in Reports, and above them in rows in web pages, family tree CDs, or word-processor documents. You now have 4 options: To the Right of the Text Abo...

GEDMill
I find it a bit slow in updating the FH file (and my FH file is not that big 1200 records and my pc is quite fast) - so I tend not to use GM unless I am working with a family group - anything smaller and it's easier to enter directly from FH But you can't complain at the price Assuming you are talk...

Yes I agree with Irene regarding the second question. Regarding the maiden name question... It is standard practice in genealogy to record women using their maiden names. When you are creating an entry with Gedcom Census and select individuals from the lists all you are doing is giving enough inform...

The Guardian Guide to Family History
kateabbott said: Why did you decide upon Family Historian as your package of choice? The reasons I originally went for Family Historian I think were: I was impressed by its use of GEDCOM as native file format and as a programmer I could see some great possibilities for developing utilities that cou...

GC Backup
A GC entry makes changes to various places in the GEDCOM file and therefore without developing a fairly complicated transaction logging system it is far easier to backup the whole file. Your analogy of backing up after each paragraph change isn't really correct, it is more like making a backup after...

GC Backup
I am regularly releasing new versions of Gedcom Census and as people may enter 30 or 40 new census records in a day it is just possible that a new feature could cause a problem and it could be useful to go back to a much earlier backup. It is also possible (though unlikely) that they may not use Fam...

GC Backup
It is an easy process just to occasionally click on the Tools menu and 'Remove old backup files...' to reduce to the most recent five backups. TO be honest, I'd rather allow it to build up the backups in case any issues in the future cause GC to corrupt someones family tree file. Most people have fa...

Yes agreed though my point was that I really don't see why the files should be available to others on the computer.

I think really these settings shouldn't be in the All UsersApplication Data. In a network environment you probably wouldn't want the custom diagrams, etc. of all the other users on your computer to appear in your instance of Family Historian. There is an argument that they should be in the Applicati...

Families split across census pages
Again for 2 families on the same page I record as two separate entries. Gedcom Census allows you to link to an existing multimedia object so you don't need to have two for the same page.

Yes I do the same too. The reference is still accurate as long as you consider it to be telling you where the source starts. I guess you could record the reference number as a range of folio or page numbers.

Have you read the 'Creating a Census Entry?' in the help file? I suggest you have a look at that as it may help you to understand what is going on. You can read the same help information on the Knowledge Base Wiki, see the link on the main menu of this website. To summarise. most people usually use ...

Help finding Parish Records
You can also view parish records at your local LDS family history centres. I've never done this though I have been thinking about doing so, perhaps someone who has used this service could comment. You don't have to be a member of the church and apparently you can order microfilmed parish records to ...

Bill Gates earns a lot of money from his software, mine is free. If you want to pay me a couple of hundred quid I'll do it :) Seriously though, Gedcom Census is for creating census records because doing it in Family Historian takes a long time. However, editing in Family Historian is so easy that Ge...

Last Record Entered
The main issue is that Gedcom Census doesn't just create a census entry. If you are using 'method 1' it creates a source, several census events, probably occupation attributes, maybe some birth events. It might also create a multimedia object and then link all of these together. It would be a very n...
