Re: Version 7.0.20 Released
To be fair to CP, they do seem very responsive to user issues: just look at the long list of features in this new update which is only a month or so after the previous one. I don't remember the replacement of the sample project being raised as an issue before. The side-effects of doing this are prob...

Re: Version 7.0.20 Released
From the Help file: Use the sample project as a learning tool only. You can make changes to it if you wish, to try out new features you're not sure about (in fact, it's a good idea to do this),but do not store your own data in it. It's repeated in a few places in the Help File, but mostly where new...

Re: Version 7.0.20 Released
Confirmed in my testing. Upgrading the FH version blows away the Sample Project without warning, even if it has been changed by the user. IMO, that is sloppy programming. The Sample Project is my data, in my Documents folder, not in an FH system folder. Resetting it also deletes all snapshot backup...

...I also assume not a lot of use without a FH Mac version? Yes it is AS will work with any Gedcom file it doesn't matter which genealogy program created the gedcom. Re: The Perfect Genealogical Software
Let's not start a Mac vs Windows argument as this has been going on for 30 years now. Suffice it to say I disagree and really don't like the mac interface, but we are all entitled to our opinions. Don't hold your breath with regards to AS for Mac.

Re: Ancestral Sources v.7.7.4 Testing (April 2023)
No you would have to add others manually using the settings option (although I might add these for you
). Something I may do is have an 'import from FH' option so it can bring in whatever you have set up in Family Historian.

Ancestral Sources v.7.7.8 Testing (July 2023)
Post updated on 15th July due to release of the 5th beta test version v7.7.8 I've been busy once again making a number of changes. When this has been tested sufficiently, I expect I'll end up releasing this as v7.8 as it is a bit more than a minor update. I do appreciate that some of these changes ...

Re: Source & media naming
I don't usually keep multiple images for a census page. But what does one do if the same page holds a second family of interest? Surely you don't file a single image under the name of the eldest person of the two separate families? I create a single media record (name not including an individual), ...

Re: Source & media naming
If you add a picture or other media item into a project, Family Historian will now check for duplicates, skip unnecessary file copies, and avoid creating a new Media record if there is already a Media record for the item in question. I interpret that as it looks to see if the same actual file has b...

Re: Need GEDCOM export suggestions for FH to GedSite
When I use {age range} it comes out in FH as "aged 87" rather than "age 87," which sounds strange to my ears (and eyes): "George William DENBOW died on 1 May 1963 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Oklahoma, USA aged 87." However, in GedSite it looks better: "He died on 1 May 1963 in Oklahoma City, Oklaho...

Re: Bug in hyperlinks in narrative reports
Contrary to what you state, DOCX is still changing, as evidenced by constant updates to MSWord via its subscription service. So; every other program must play "Catch-up" and that is expensive for small companies to do on an ongoing basis. That is why some, like Scrivener which supports both formats...

Re: Bug in hyperlinks in narrative reports
I'm sure MS lobbies hard if changes are proposed to the standard but it's an open standard so anyone can use it and apparently it hasn't been changed for 6 years now. Most of the key software supports it and it must be the most common document format (for word-processing) in the world. It sounds lik...

Re: Bug in hyperlinks in narrative reports
No this has been an open standard now for about 15 years - same applies to xlsx (spreadsheet/Excel) and pptx (Presentation/Powerpoint)

Re: Bug in hyperlinks in narrative reports
I'm quite interested to see how this plays out, because RTF is not the greatest vehicle for use with the more advanced elements, like hyperlinks and graphics. I think that's why many programs now export directly to MSWord format. That said; I wish they would consider exporting to a an open standard...

Re: Upgrading Version 6 to Version 7
Hi There, I too am contemplating the upgrade to v7. These are probably questions answered when it first launched but.... 1. Will my customised templates upgrade correctly or should I take screenshots (I'm aware there are way more options in v7)? 2. I have flags created which populate with entries v...

Re: Can non-autogenerated template fields be made to persist?
The next version of AS will include the facility to 'carry forward' Source Template field values that are not automatically generated, to the next entry. In the screenshot below the red C icons show that those 2 entries are carried forward from the previous. The red circle next to Register Type indi...

Re: is this an error or wishlist
When I test this in v7, if I type the Ø it doesn't then auto-complete (because it showed me the accent choice dialog instead) but then if I type the y (Øy) it does then suggest the correct place.
In the Place List it does correctly select Øystre Slidre, Valdres, Innlandet, NO, NOR when I test it.

Re: Unable to enter diacritics in fields
The next version of AS will support holding down a key to select alternatives (very similar to the way FH does it). This was quite a difficult feature to implement. I tackled it because I liked the challenge of working out how to do it, but it was surprisingly tricky to do!

Re: Can non-autogenerated template fields be made to persist?
AS doesn't edit existing sources/citations (except in a very specific circumstance where it can help AS users to convert their census method 1 sources to templated and/or richtext), it generates new ones. I think you are possibly expecting too much of it. It will offer to copy citations into a fact ...

Re: Can non-autogenerated template fields be made to persist?
There is also the issue of efficiently populating invariant template fields of Splitter templates, which doesn't just affect AS7 data-entry. If one is a Splitter, the invariant data actually needs to be entered in each instance of the template, which is a time/efficiency issue even in FH7 proper. I...

Re: Can non-autogenerated template fields be made to persist?
AS attacks things a bit differently and would seem to need some way of making invariant data persist until changed. From what Nick says, Ancestral Sources can actually be configured to handle Lumper templates. However; I'm not sure how/if it handles the invariant data in the associated Lumper templ...
