Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
Although I have been using Family Historian since v4, when reading the forum I now ignore questions on plug ins and ancestral sources as I do not understand them. I am still a very basic user, as I am not technically minded. I sometimes wonder why I keep upgrading! I'm sure you're not really intere...

Re: Replacing Pre-Existing Facts as part of RE-DO using AS
If you're using a fact flag then I believe it will disappear when the fact is replaced.

Re: Census Template Editor: French Census issues
Your response makes it sound as if there must be something wrong with me for trying to explore various avenues to be sure of whether AS works for me , not others , but for me . And again you've misunderstood me. As I said there are lots of people who don't use AS because they are more comfortable w...

Re: Census Template Editor: French Census issues
With respect to; "I'm not trying to persuade you to use AS (it may make my life a lot easier if you don't!)". I'm not sure that such a comment was really warranted. In exploring various avenues, I obviously need to ask questions to make sure I'm using the tool correctly and what its limitations are...

Re: Census Template Editor: French Census issues
While I was thinking about what Nick said, I explored using auto-text directly in source-notes and found that the printed results suited my reports better than when I tried to use AS. I also found that my workflow was actually more conceptually comfortable for me when doing it that way. So; I'm goi...

Re: Census Template Editor: French Census issues
For all records and in particular the non census records, the autotext is only ever meant to create an approximate best guess. You always have to then manually edit the source text to match the original source. There is no point entering data in the census grid for a lot of the columns if you are no...

Re: Census Template Editor: French Census issues
Columns related to address or place are typically not included in the grid templates but entered into the place or address fields in a standardised format that fits with the way you organise your place and address records. There is little point including that in the source text column transcriptions...

Re: Census Template Editor: French Census issues
Nick; Thanks for the explanation. I was just wondering if allowing the date to be blank in the template and then allowing it during data entry would work. That way one could enter the date a mayor of the city signed the census and would act much more like what AS appears to be expecting. Then, if o...

Re: Census Template Editor: French Census issues
Thanks for reporting these issues. I may well make some changes to the way this works, but if you enter a year in the 'Year or Description' field of the Census Template Editor then it requires you to enter a full date. If you enter a description (something that isn't a year) then the date has to be ...

Re: Advisability of changing Census Roles from default options
Just to be clear, my comments earlier regarding witnesses were all related to census records as that is the title of this thread and what was asked about. Witness roles work well with the other source types e.g. witnesses at weddings. They work where someone is related to an event in a secondary way...

Re: Advisability of changing Census Roles from default options
On the one hand, AS doesn't typically include the roles and Nick explained why. On the other, based on Mikes response, it sounds as if some people do use them. You make it sound as if Mike and I are saying different things. I only wrote two sentences, and the first of those says that there are many...

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
I wonder if the way you use the forum reflects the fact that you are a seasoned user of FH. I find that I have done the same thing on other forums as I became familiar with the product. For novice users, however, that is often not the case. I don't think it is because I'm a seasoned/experienced use...

Re: Advisability of changing Census Roles from default options
Using AS, each of the individuals in a census household in my FH project have a census fact (occupation too, etc.) with a citation back to a source that has a transcription of the census entry and a link to the census image. So if I need to know their role in a census entry I can look at either of t...

Re: Advisability of changing Census Roles from default options
There are thousands of users of FH and probably many different methods used so there isn't one way of doing it. However, Ancestral Sources doesn't support the use of witnesses for census entries as I wouldn't recommend that way of working and I've never heard a convincing argument for doing so.

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
I wonder if anyone else uses the forum like me. Other than the AS section (that I keep a closer eye on), I only ever view the forum via the Active Topics list, so the entire forum is presented to me in one long list and I don't really ever notice which section I'm in! I guess we all work in differen...

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
One of the main reasons we have very long threads sometimes for beginner questions is where Person A asks a question and Person B answers it but gets something wrong or is perceived to be giving the wrong advice or there may be an alternative way to do it. So we could all just leave it at their answ...

Re: unable to enter FHUG site with message Your clock is behind etc
Can you explain this bit: I am using a manually set time on my Windows laptop (due to MS international date/time confusions) In the world of networking that I have been involved with for many years there can be all sorts of issues if the time isn't very accurate and if your computer isn't synchronis...

Re: Ancestral Sources v.7.7.4 Testing (April 2023)
If we're focussing on census for now... The Census Templates specify the columns. If you enter each individual you find in the census entry into the grid then some of those columns will automatically generate facts such as occupation, census, nationality, birth, etc. Some fields might populate notes...

Re: Ancestral Sources v.7.7.4 Testing (April 2023)
You are using a very vague term "template" to refer to various different things. I assumed you meant Census Templates because you mentioned countries and countries only really appear there. Family Historian doesn't really have an equivalent of this so I'm not sure what you're referring to. To try to...

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
The way that some forums get around these kinds of issues is to be able to tag a post as the "accepted answer" or "best answer" and that gets immediately shown after the initial question, with all the other posts below (including the accepted answer repeated in the place where it appeared chronologi...

Re: Ancestral Sources v.7.7.4 Testing (April 2023)
Still trying to figure out where to set certain items, like the list of possible countries (France is not there). So it will be a while. If you are referring to the Census Templates in AS then you are not forced to choose from the existing entries in the Type/Region/Year drop-downs. So you can choo...

Re: Ancestral Sources v.7.7.4 Testing (April 2023)
I should note that there are some configuration fields, such as the one for "recognizing" a template/record, that would benefit from adding the ability to handle diacritics. I have some templates in which the name is something like "État civil". I thought I'd managed to change all the relevant text...

Re: Source & media naming
Gary, yes that workflow would be possible. However, are you intending to re-do the fact creation as well? If so, AS would be the way to go [[Nick Walker falls off his chair :D ]] as it's currently the best option for streamlining creation of sources, linking them to media and creating the facts. I ...
