Re: Research Advice for a Newbie
However if, like me, you live far away from access to your ancestors' records you will start to see that an annual subscription to one or more of the big websites is good value for money. One of the little used resources nowadays are the LDS Family History Centres which I used quite a lot for those...

Re: Free access to findmypast
The three extra days for subscribers only applies to those with Worldwide subs, not Britain subs. Some people on another forum have been given the extension by sending an email complaint but others have been refused even when it has been pointed out to FMP that they have made an exception for some. ...

Re: Select Repository... window - any way to simulate clicking on OK using keyboard?
Thanks for the replies. NickiP - the way I get to the one I want is to just start spelling the name on the keyboard and it positions to the right one or I position to one that is close and then use the down arrow I've got © sign at the beginning of all my Repository records (for display purposes in...

Re: Select Repository... window - any way to simulate clicking on OK using keyboard?
I get the same behaviour on Windows 10 as Bill. I can also only select a repository by clicking on it, if I use the tab from the filter section it just goes across all three sections and back to the first, never goes down. If I click on the selected repository the OK is highlighted but, as for Bill,...

Re: FH Instructional sessions
I think you'll find the SOG courses have nothing to do with Calico Pie or FHUG. They are run by one of the SOG's "Fellows" John Hanson and it no doubt is dependent on when he can run the course.

I created a Custom Fact called "Criminal" with the following Sentence Template: {individual} was convicted of {=GetLabelledText(%FACT.NOTE2%,"Offence:")} {date} at {=GetLabelledText(%FACT.NOTE2%,"Court:")} held at {_place}. {=GetLabelledText(%FACT.NOTE2%,"Note:")} The "Note:" can cover a multitude o...

Re: Merging projects warning
I am aware of the issues with the FH Backups, but as I use other imaging software to image the whole drive that isn't an issue. If I was to migrate the laptop to an SSD, it won't be smaller than the current drive or it would mean I would always have to have an external drive connected to access most...

Re: Merging projects warning
Not really Mike, all my data files (apart from Outlook files and other windows profile related files) are stored in C:\\Docs which removes problems with long file names. I would just copy the whole folder into the root of C again. I've had problems with long file names in the past, even considering ...

Re: Merging projects warning
I have merged two projects in the past and not had any issues. I have also had that message on the odd occasion. From memory, and its over a year since I merged numerous projects into just four, I think I just cancelled the merge, clicked save on the open project, opened the other project and clicke...

Re: Tithe Commutation Act 1836
Just had a closer look. The problem appears to be the query isn't recognising Burial dates where there is no corresponding death date. Apologies, the baptism date isn't the issue. I thought I'd seen one or two which fell outside the range when I previously ran the query, but I think that was me misr...

Re: Tithe Commutation Act 1836
True, but the original post was not from Nicki, so the 1836 date is probably not relevant. Nicki said the query does not 'filter out' those with only baptism and/or burial dates, and 'If I have no definite birth/death date I don't include them'. Perhaps Nicki could clarify. I tried using 1836 and o...

Re: Tithe Commutation Act 1836
Jane, I was also interested in this but it doesn't seem to filter out individuals who only have a Baptism and/or Burial date with no corresponding Birth/Death dates. If I have no definite birth/death date I don't include them as FH's display allows you to see them in the various views unlike other p...

Re: Upgrade to Win 10 and FH support
[ Corporate entities can't use free versions of 3rd party software, as it is often restricted to personal non-commercial use . The paid for versions of 3rd party software often adds bells and whistles, ease of use, and features not in Windows . But, in this thread I was comparing MR Free (This vers...

Re: Upgrade to Win 10 and FH support
You can do individual/multiple folder and file "restores" (maybe recovery would be a better term) from an image in the free version. Basically you use MR Free to mount the image as a drive then use File Explorer to view the image and copy any folders/files that you want. You need a paid version of ...

Re: Upgrade to Win 10 and FH support
Finally upgraded my laptop and netbook to Win10 a couple of days ago and I don't find the Win10 Menu much different from Win7 or earlier, its quite customisable so can get it to work more like the earlier versions. As for imaging a drive, I've been using Symantec System Recovery for a number of year...

Re: Display problems in Windows 10
In my case the fan started screaching when the laptop had been rebooted after using the air can while it was switched off. I suspect it had sent some crud further into the fan. Once cleaned, the fan was working as expected and there hasn't been a repeat of the noise. Unfortunately HP in their wisdom...

Re: Display problems in Windows 10
I tried the can of air trick the other day, the laptop fan started screaching. So I resorted to the old tested way of using the vacuum. I have the added problem of two cats who shed a lot of fur and that's usually what gets sucked out through the keyboard and vents when it gets cleaned. That said, m...

Re: Repeating licensing info for media in reports
Just a thought, if the Narrative Reports are to be distributed as PDFs with clickable links to URLs then I agree that it should suffice. I just wonder if the reports are to be printed, whether that would really suffice because while the details are there, few people would probably type a full URL ma...

Re: Repeating licensing info for media in reports
How about creating a Source Record with an appropriate title relating to the specific image and link the Source to the Fact, so that it would appear in the list of Sources and numbered against the Fact? Depending on where you are showing the images in the Report, at least it would be correctly sourc...

Re: Narrative Reports Sentence Templates
Yes, Nicki, I think you underestimate the capabilities of AS for its options and templates to be customised to your needs. Possibly, possibly not, but the fact remains that AS doesn't allow for Census Family Facts to be created as far as I can see and with 50+k entries over four trees, I'm not incl...

Re: Narrative Reports Sentence Templates
This is something I've been looking at for census facts that have been recorded using AS. Rather than have up to four sentences, I'd like one, such as: Bill Smith appeared on the census for 1881, aged 77, living at 123 High Street, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England, where his occupation was given as ...

Sorry, I keep forgetting about the LibreOffice and OpenOffice ability to 'edit' PDF , although they effectively use their Drawing tools, so it is not clear that if you make significant 'text' changes that the word-wrap to line-length works as a word-processor, or you finish up with short or long li...
