Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow

Mike...I mentioned it before but it may have got forgotten or lost in confusion... 1) Clearly we need all media to be records to facilitate the _PHOTO tag and also direct links from INDI event to source objects (citations) - BOTH currently treats full as records but part as under the INDI 2) There s...

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow

Well that's a generous commitment, Mike. One stage at a time... I will keep the KB up to date with things I find...if you wish to add more provisos please do so. I hope I can treat it as a single record of what we CAN do today however unacceptably rough it may be to some people. Also to record our t...

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow

Ancestry connects objects and updates data when you accept a hint. The objects must get back to FH. If full images are media records (as they are by accident) then adding the links makes it work. Yes text fields on images do not round trip...other than title I don't use them. Remind me where the hin...

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow ~ Data retention

I have put data into as many FTM fields as I can find. Interestingly there are differences between an export (file 1 below) and a import/re-export (file 2), I note:

Source notes export but do not reimport
Some tags change a little
Export 1.txt
Export from FTM
(5.37 KiB) Downloaded 227 times
Export 2.txt
Export from FTM, import, re-export
(5.33 KiB) Downloaded 223 times

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow ~ Data retention

All it does is change your existing data (should you choose) to match against a database of names: In: Town, County, Country , County, Country* , , Country Village Incorrect, County, Country Out Town, City, Country City, Country Country Village Correct, Larger Place, Big Area, County, Country So you...

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow

Numbering in FTM appears much as suspected. When I delete a person in FTM the export leaves a gap where they were. When I delete that person externally then import to FTM then export there is no gap...renumbering has occurred. BTW, I imported a file just exported from FTM after one simple edit. Conc...

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow

Thanks for the additional info. By now I can take fairly good guesses at the results FTM will provide. I have a little more understanding of their development motivations. Therefore, I guess they have decided to accept both M and O records as pictures (media or objects) but to use M as the primary. ...

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow ~ Data retention

As per KB, Ancestry keeps place data differently to FH (no level structure, no leading commas). Normalisation is done against their place database which probably helps with matches and almost certainly provided lng/lat data. I've decided to fit in the Ancestry and get rid of my three level leading c...

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow ~ Media

WRITTEN AGAIN AS TESTING WAS WRONG - working at it... I had to create links from INDI to the OBJE records as these records are currently orphaned output of the BOTH option...hopefully that will get proper results. I also added your test tags. Note RFN on the INDI record did not re-export from FTH. O...

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow

Thanks for the link change...the accidental data thing...its easy to make data inconsistent and to change things accidentally...one of the advantages over FTM is the various ways we can choose to employ in FH to run spot checks. Yes it would be good to get help, I recognise how you and Jane may feel sometimes. Yes, I suspect formatted note records are probably our only option other than ...

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow ~ Sources

1) Ancestry certainly has its own additional data in the FTM database and at Ancestry. I have merged data back to FTM and my census info, hints there all remain intact. You are right that once sources have gone thru FH they may be regarded as new Sources when being reimported. My thinking was to rei...

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow ~ Media

A quick reply on the easy bits. Further research later. 1a) Later 1b) Media privacy needs further consideration - we try to preserve what we can (either now on in a later version) to satisfy the owning software, or we try to convert FTM security flags to FM (if exists) satisfying both or we ignore t...

Mike, I'm getting back to your posting above dated Thu Mar 12, 2015 4:13 pm . A quick reply because I need to shift from documentation to progress - please excuse tone and typos. Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow ~ Data retention

I am using the KB documents for development purposes using my data, as a working record for me and for collaboration with you...not for advising anyone. Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow ~ Sources

Yes, I agree existing sources need to survive. I have also kept some sources from elsewhere. The ones that might optionally be deleted before embarking on the first export are those that you will match again using Ancestry. The step is not necessary but it will mean that everything is recorded and t...

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow ~ Media

Some quick feedback: 1) I didn't notice the plugin exported full images twice, once as LMOs and once accidentally as MRs. My initial answer is that to say what FTM appears to do. It store Caption, Date, Categories, Description, Private flag and a note record and exports: 0 @M355@ OBJE 1 FILE C:\file...

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow

Mike, my head is spinning (tired)! I don't understand "multiple links to full images for local Media Objects". Don't worry, I'll create a BOTH file and look again at what's there. When I last looked I though the part images are attached to the INDI (LMOs?) and the full image are OBJE record with no ...

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow

Yes much of the GEDCOM data will do the round trip although there will be issues like info now in notes fields and I can't talk for those who use FH's data in a more complex manner. My current thinking gets rid of the need to merge back into FH. Merges are hard work and data will get out of sync due...

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow

Yep FH images exported to FTM are not required purely for Ancestry hints. However the data updated in Ancestry has to get back to FH again and this includes OBJE links sent to Ancestry. Further, putting images in Ancestry (the least of our issues frankly) provides Ancestry users with the fullest acc...

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow

Mike, thanks for taking time to study my evolving waffle... I'll get to these matters shortly. My current focus is proving the spec with a VBA prototype therefore the spec is being kept up to date. You'll note the T marker as each requirement is proven or elaborated on. It's simply too complex to sp...
