Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software
Interesting thanks. Taking a wild guess, I imagined that Ancestry wishes to focus on its core web and data product which it wishes to develop further without the burden of PC software and Treesync. It's original announcement to simply abandon these products may have been deliberate, simply to establ...

Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software
Adrian I would also feel uncomfortable using Ancestry only. I understand how one might want to research in one screen and check out existing info in at least one other screen. This is one of the main reasons I am very keen to continue using PC software alongside Ancestry's web pages. Without PC soft...

Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software
Jim Having matched and added many thousands of hints (official records) and added hundreds of new people to my tree almost at the click of a mouse I cannot imagine going back to copying and pasting individual elements of data and moving images (photos and records) manually between Ancestry and PC so...

Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software
Ancestry's data is certainly valuable. Indeed, our own data is surely far more valuable than any particular software we use. Consequently, it has been suggested that our data be input in standard and simple ways to simplify any later change to other software (using the GEDCOM file format). I already...

Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software
I suspect that searching Ancestry will still require that one is an Ancestry member and pays them a fee. You won't be able to do it solely because you use RM or FTM.

Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software
Well, here is a pretty positive answer from Rootsmagic: http://blog.rootsmagic.com/?p=2612 Search – RootsMagic will be the first and currently only software besides FTM to search Ancestry’s extensive collections of historical records from around the world and let you download those records into your...

Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software
Mike, not yet...I suspect we will learn soon enough and will keep my ears open...however, I'd certainly understand if someone else wanted to approach this matter more formally or urgently. The deliberate wording made we wonder as the functional description sounded deliberately constrained...and as w...

Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software
I read the words "save your tree on Ancestry" but I am not yet assuming this means synchronising as we have at present. Continuing such a facility would also require a commitment by Ancestry (server software and data standards) and constrain, therefore, its own web software development plans. We nee...

Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software
Yes, sadly, things appear more stagnant than they ought. Due to the relative importance of record and tree matching I will use whatever software replaces FTM to synchronise with Ancestry. Linking to thousands of official records and finding many more family members far outweighs any improved reporti...

Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software
OK partnerships between Ancestry and PC suppliers sound very reasonable... ...lets see which PC software providers prevail...most likely those that partner Ancestry and use Treesync (or equivalent) I suspect! Where does FH stand on this? Will FH muster the energy to "take over the world"? I will be ...

Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software
Treesync synchronises nearly all Ancestry data with that in FTM (including images attached to people and citations). With FTM retiring in a couple of years, this will no longer be possible as the implication is to retire Treesync too. It will likely remain possible to download your data from Ancestr...

Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software
FH is a great program, much better than FTM. But we cannot match against records and trees and automatically update our data from Ancestry (or wherever). There are two separate issues... 1) what software to use after FTM (and get our image data there from FTM or Ancestry) 2) how to update our chosen...

Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software
Sad, FTM filled a vital gap. Ancestry provides an excellent service helping us find information (matching to formal records and other people's tree) and then making it very easy to selectively apply/add this information to our tree (manual transfer to PC being slow, laborious and prone to error). An...

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow
Mike, I have very little time but am trying to respond briefly. I installed the new plugin and timed it about 6.5 minutes/ 1900 media with source on a network and output locally. I want to give you the comparison time for the store version but this does not work. I read to revert I must delete the ....

Thanks Mike
Just back and catching up with the normal stuff.
I will test out the new version shortly (and update KB as discussed). I'm interested which media records you have managed to scrap - are you linking to avoiding duplication - what did you discover?

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow
Yes he shares the same issue and sound like he is well placed to help if/when you want to start work on the FTM to FH process. I hate merges too. The relevance of my comment is simply to let you know where I am..."stuck" is another good word. In the KB (FTM>FH) I noted already some of the key priori...

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow
Mike, yes the KB does need a tweak or two for completion. I'm away for a couple of weeks but will take a look shortly.
I can't find Clive's postings readily.
