Re: Descendant Diagram question
Thank you to all those who responded. I think I have this all sorted now. Another question (or should I post a new topic) - is there a way to highlight all 'blood' relatives of a given person in a chart, perhaps specifically all direct descendants of a focus person, so they are easily seen on the ch...

Re: Descendant Diagram question
So, I found an easier way (I think) of avoiding removing all the names via the query. So this is the default diagram Text Default%20Diagram.JPG I've changed it to this, using Lorna's instructions, and moving the text to replace the removed (default) 'aka' Diagram Modified.JPG Seems to work. Just nee...

Re: Descendant Diagram question
tatewise said: Despite having used FH for a while, Neil is clearly an inexperienced user regarding Diagram Text Schemes, so needs a lot more detailed guidance about customising them. That's right! I've always just used the diagrams to visualise the families from time to time, and only just realised ...

Re: Descendant Diagram question
If you really want to include them without having to put them in manually you could use =TextIf(IsTrue(Exists(%CUR~SPOU>NAME%) and IsTrue(%INDI.SEX% = "Female")),"a.k.a " . %INDI.NAME:GIVEN_ALL% . " " . %CUR~SPOU>NAME:SURNAME%,) and then add a flag to any women who don't adopt their husbands surnam...

Re: Descendant Diagram question
As Jane and I have both said, it's not common practice to add them when using FH. The convention is to record women with their birth names. Thanks Lorna I think I said earlier, that I have never added alternate names in FH other than where I want show a name that is used by family or how they are k...

Re: Descendant Diagram question
If you want to keep them you could still remove them and then put an expression to add the ones for Married women back in, it's not normal to show them though as it simply repeats what the diagram is already telling you. But with no alternate name added, it doesn't show me the aka, which is what I ...

Re: Descendant Diagram question
So, I didn't read you post properly Jane!
I see you say select the names to delete, presumably those in the 3rd (and even 4th and 5th columns)
Question: If I do this, will all my aka's disappear on the diagrams? I rather like them, and trying to achieve all aka's rather than lose them!

Re: Descendant Diagram question
OK. so I ran it, and get lots of results, probably as a result of my TMG conversion some time ago.
Can I use this query to remove them or do I have to go to each record to remove them?

I have attached a quick query which will list the first 3 alternate names for a Female along with the first 3 Spouse surnames. Thank you Jane.... need some help here! Re: Descendant Diagram question
Lorna, Yes I mean exactly that. At the top it shows in Red their Birth name in full, and then below 'some' have the aka married name. As far as I know I have NOT added an alternate name for anyone by default, only for specific individuals where they are/were known differently (EG my Uncle William Ed...

Descendant Diagram question
Something that's baffling me, and probably really simple. If I click on the Descendant Diagram, or indeed any of the 4 diagram tools on the bar, some married females have their married name with "a.k.a" prefixed while others have nothing. As far as I am aware, I just enter the marriage each time wit...

Re: Join Two projects
You would normally merge the smaller file into the larger one. Does it ask for common people short answer yes, it will suggest them and you can match additional ones if needed. Have you read through glossary:merge_compare_files|> Merge/Compare File ? Thanks Jane. Yes I read that page after searchin...

Join Two projects
Hi Just wanted to run this past those who are more expert than I. I've recently found what I think (hope) is an Ancestor in one of my paternal lines, so I created a new Project with the data in it, amounting to about 50/60 people. I would like to merge this with my main project, both projects having...

Recording adoption by new marriage
Hi After some advice please. I have a family where the first son was born to his mothers first husband, lets say he is Christopher Smith, for example. His mother divorces, and marries again (EG Mr Jones and has four subsequent 'Jones' children. Christopher 'Smith' shows as Christopher Jones in subse...

Re: Save Report As PDF issue
Jane, With these errors (on both laptop and PC) you didn't even get that far. Just the error. Re-installing the PDF printer in both cases has cured the issue, thanks to this page https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:family_historian_installation_problems#save_as_pdf_file_output_is_not_ena...

Exporting specific people
Hello all I want to export part of my tree as a Gedcom to share with a distant cousin. It is specifically my grandmothers ancestry from the most distant relative I have found. He had two sons, and I am descended from one son and the other person I want to share with, from the other son. When I try t...

Re: Marriage names
Anne, I am not trying to lose the identity of the women in my tree, I am trying to present them in narratives the way my research finds them. In this case the parish register told me that Thomas Grantham widower married Sarah Hodgkins dau of William Cooper. I will also record that Sarah Cooper marri...

Re: Marriage names
Whilst I agree Anne, if they are widowed (as opposed to divorcing and reverting to maiden name), they marry under the new name and that is how it should record in the narrative, as per the register. Neil Neil I have several of these and the marriage certificates / parish register all show something...

Re: Marriage names
A woman should always have her own maiden name. She was still the same person who was born Sarah Cooper! I usually make a note that she was a widow with the surname Hodkins at marriage with my relative. Anne Whilst I agree Anne, if they are widowed (as opposed to divorcing and reverting to maiden n...

Marriage names
Hi, A distant 'cousin' in my tree, married two Sarahs. I just discovered comparing two entries for him in subsequent Censuses. In 1881 his wife Sarah was near his age, yet in 1891 his wife is significantly younger. So, I've tracked the second wife down, found the marriage and note she too was a wido...
