Re: AS Fails to Open on install
Keith, Had no problems at all installing Ancestral Sources in Windows 10, so this may not the answer, but just for elimination purposes, have you checked that the version of the MS.Net Framework 3.5 you installed and the Ancestral Sources version match, i.e. the .Net Framework Installer and Ancestra...

Re: Security aspects of plugins
Every time a user attempts to install a Family Historian Plugin a warning message from the Developer flashes up highlighting the need to ensure the plugin comes from a reputable/trustworthy source and also warning that it is the user's responsibility to verify that source. There is little more that ...

Re: 3 different forenames 3 entries on Familky search
The dates for the other children suggest that these were probably quads rather than a 'batch baptism/christening of children" born at different times; and Christening at Birth was not at all unusual if children were not expected to survive long. I believe that this was sometimes carried out by the m...

Re: Transferring a detailed Family Tree from a PC to a Mac
Phil, There are several Viewing Modes you can use and it's a matter of playing with them to choose which works best for you: 1. With the Windows Virtual Machine running, you can click on the Green Dot at the top left of the application Window. As with all Apple Apps, this takes the Windows applicati...

Re: Author vs Publisher for GRO sources
Peter, I'm afraid I can only respond with a counter-question: "Do you actually need an 'author' under these specific circumstances?" i.e. it's not the same as a third-party individual or organisation (e.g. FreeBMD, Ancestry, FindMyPast etc.) independently transcribing the so-called original indexes,...

Sorry for the delay responding to this thread, have been away for a few days. Re: Avast upsets Windows Sytem Restore
Jim, Most of the major Anti-Virus products seem to be getting increasingly aggressive in preventing Operating System changes. It's good in the sense that they are doing what they were designed to do, but problematic because they seem to block changes that the user actually wants to take place, witho...

Happy to offer any assistance required on installing a Virtual Machine using Oracle's VirtualBox software. VirtualBox is totally free to use, apart from any voluntary donations users care to make, as its continuous development is largely underwritten by Oracle's commercial users (Businesses). I know...

Re: Decipher a name on old document
From reading a very large quantity of older hand written documents, I would say the witness signature is, most probably Jhon Perrett. The Bride's name has clearly been entered twice as Perrott, but whether either is the 'correct' spelling of the family name is probably debateable without further res...

Re: Duplicate photos
I believe it's simply showing graphically that the person has two completely separate facts with a photo attachment and the photo therefore appears twice. If they were at the same address, I would suggest one possibility would be to change one of the Residence facts to a date range, 'Bet X and Y', l...

Re: Addresses - Suggestion for Best Practice
At the end of the day it's down to user choice and deciding what purposes you (or any user) will be doing with the address field: - If you do follow a practice of entering a street name followed by a house number, what's it going to read like if you include the address in narrative reports? - What w...

Re: Wine Linux Debian8
Andy, Don't worry about using the supposedly 'unstable' Development Versions of Wine. It's more that Wine is in perpetual 'Beta' and the new builds are so frequent that the Development Team never gets around to/bothers about releasing a 'stable build'. All of the Wine Front Ends use the Wine Develop...

I also tend to use Registration District, County as a proxy place of Birth/Death/Marriage until/unless I have a more accurate location. It seems to be primarily (if not entirely) Windows 7 users who are affected by the changed Folder/File Permissions issue, but only some Windows 7 Users.
