Re: Plugin Store
I get the same result, plus the 'Check Installed Plugins Against the Store' Plugin reports errors on every plugin, i.e. states each plugin needs updating, then errors out if you choose 'Yes'. Edit: Tested the 'Recapture' and it did 'unlock' access to the site, but it reported the same access error w...

Re: FH7 and mouse
O.K. You've ruled out two possibilities :D The only other 'third party' possibilities I can immediately think of are: - some form of Mouse Control software setting, e.g. if you have a Logitech Mouse and Software, but then you would probably see the same behaviour in other software; - (more likely) t...

Yes they could possibly distribute CDs; and they could also charge a £10 premium, plus postage for the CD, as does MacKiev for FamilyTreeMaker. However, online registration would still be required before one could use the software or obtain any updates, which are only provided via downloads. We don'...

Re: FH7 and mouse
@uktony,
Are you seeing this behaviour throughout the software or in a specific window/windows? Are you using a 'touch screen' device?
If it is specifically in the Maps Window, then you could try disabling (untick) the "Enable Zoom Animation" option in Tools > Preferences > Map Window.

Re: Will V6 backups work in V7 of FH
Mike, Thank you for the reassurance. So the only potential problem lies on having two (or more) licenced installations running on different Family Historian versions, which is no different past behaviour. That's fine as I am currently operating with 2 Settings Backups, Version 6 for unconverted proj...

Re: Will V6 backups work in V7 of FH
Mark, Thanks for that advice. Very timely, as I'm just about update my main installation and will be running a combination of Version 6 and 7 for some time (on different and unconnected projects of course). For me, the negative impact of losing a method for 'transferring' the majority of settings ju...

Re: Problem Upgrading to AS7
Nick, My initial test with Crossover (Wine) test was with AS7 and FH6 data; and everything was still working as I expected. Have not done the full FH7 update on a Windows Virtual Machine so will now be able to access and test the Crossover AS7 installation more fully on FH7 data. Will try to report ...

@NickWalker, I've just installed AS7 (32-bit) on MacOS (Big Sur) + Crossover 20.0.2 and everything seems fine for me. Process used: - Create new Wine Prefix set as Windows 7. - Installed Microsoft.Net Framework 4.8 (a lengthy process with several 'staged restarts' prompted by the installation proces...

@RS3100 Another possibility, depending on your Grandfather's age in 1948, is that that was the year when the 'universal entitlement' to a State Pension (in the UK) became law under the 1946 Act; and he might have been asked to produce some 'proof of age'. By the way, in the public Civil Service Depa...

Re: Space saving
No, a character is a character. and eliminating single characters has such a minute effect on user space that you would never notice any significant change. Just type a lengthy text note into your FH Data file and see how little the difference is in file size. You could, of course, limit the number ...

Re: Syncronisation with popular genealogy sites (Ancestry; FMP)
From casual monitoring of some user forums for software that links to Ancestry and FamilySearch, I would conclude that the major cost to software providers seems to come from handling constant 'grumbles' about loss of contact/login capability with those sites via the software. Users mostly place the...

Re: Is FH As Good As We Think
I'm not clear where this discussion is going as it started from the title and seems to have deteriorated into a grumble about undefined 'bugs' in the software. If this is to continue positively, can we just be clear that: - A software bug is an error, flaw or fault in a computer program or system th...

Re: Is FH As Good As We Think
Having used/tested many different Family Tree software options on Windows, MacOS and Linux, I would support all of positive comments made so far, but would add that every piece of software (including Desktop Operating Systems and individual software packages) I've used since the early 1980's have be...

Re: Installing Version 2.1.6
Put simply, Windows 8's built in security protection is warning the user that the software installer is asking to add some "other software dependencies", possibly third-party software; and/or make system changes, which needs administrator privileges. This can be 'dangerous' if you are installing/tes...

Re: Major problems with Family Historian program
Diane, According to the Changelogs for Crossover, preliminary support for MacOS 10.14 (Mojave) wasn't introduced until the release of Crossover Version 17.5.1, in July 2018, so you've probably been lucky to keep an older version going as long as you have. I agree with Colin's comments on the current...

Re: Updated maps in Version7?
I think you may be misunderstanding where the Map references are coming from. They don't come from within Family Historian, but from the Mapping Site(s) so any changes/corrections would have to be be made at source by those responsible. OpenStreetMap is created by users and is free to use under an o...

I think FamilyTreeMaker behaves similarly. It certainly did the last time I tested importing a FTM GEDCOM to RootsMagic, but will try to retest.

Re: Importing from MyHeritage - WARNING
Not certain, but could this be a result of the original user privatising individuals and facts for those people they don't wish to be directly identified? If I remember correctly, something very similar occurs when exporting GEDCOMs from Ancestry when individuals and their facts are privatised, i.e....

I'm with Brian on this, i.e. I record the 'original' source/copyright holder as the Repository and limit any recording of Websites, who have a (probably time-limited) license to publish images/transcripts, as publishers, using Source Publication details or notes if necessary.

Normally, I would update MacOS first and then existing software but, as no Crossover version prior to 19.x is compatible with MacOS Catalina that approach doesn't work particularly well. - It really needs to be Crossover first to overcome the problems with 32-bit software; and that will update the s...
