Re: Internet matches with Ancestry
There seems to be one important set of facts lacking in these discussions; and apparently not fully appreciated/understood by those who continue to enquire about automated internet matches ('Hints') directly from the Ancestry database, i.e. it is not within the gift of Calico Pie to provide/implemen...

Re: Discontinuing support for IE
For info. Although it hasn't been formally announced on the Calico Pie Website, the latest version of of FH7 (Version 7.0.6) has been generally available since around 3 June from https://www.family-historian.co.uk/install7 . This update 'reinstates' the internal browser functionality on standard Win...

Re: FH7 running on Crossover - no paragaphs in notes
Jacqui, I can explain what is happening, but unfortunately don't know of any solution. From your description, what I expect you are seeing in your Crossover app is a "corrupted" display of a correctly formatted text note. See my example below of exactly the same sample note as it displays in Crossov...

Re: Linux
Mark, Agreed, most Linux based OSs are much less resource hungry than Windows. The image above came from a Linux Virtual Machine running on an 8 year old MacBook Pro with an allocation of 2 CPU cores and 2GB RAM, which represents a pretty low-level hardware setup by modern standards, but it runs FH ...

Re: Linux
FH7 does work on Linux systems with, I would estimate, around 95% functionality. This of course involves using Wine to create a functional Family Historian app; and possibly a front end GUI application such as Winetricks, PlayOnLinux, Q4Wine, Bottles Crossover for Linux etc. if you prefer to avoid a...

Re: Notation meaning
It seems to be an Archive Reference Code (Index Reference) which probably only has 'meaning' to the Archivists who created the referencing system as a finding aid: see: https://www.flarchives.co.uk/towneley-of-towneley.html.

Re: FH v7 and windows emulators WARNING
I can confirm your issues with Tables when using Crossover, but having tried various experiments I think the issue may well be that Wine can't (currently) cope with the way Tables have been implemented in Family Historian (also Ancestral Sources), or there might be some obscure Windows dependency th...

Re: Backup and Restore Family Historian error messages
Mike, Settings Backup & Restore seems to be working fine for me when using Crossover. I cross-checked the functions by running a native Windows installation in tandem before and after checking/installing Plugin updates and encountered no problems. Will do some further testing with writing Registry E...

Re: FH7 through Crossover will not load
Diane, On thing it might be worthwhile checking is the Mac System Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy, as Catalina might be blocking some necessary access. My settings for Crossover and FH7 are shown below. There could be system differences, but the important check is that all Folders displayed ...

Re: FH, Parallels and Apple M1
As far as I know "Parallels for Mac M1", if/when it becomes available, would require the installation of a licensed Windows 10 version specifically designed to run on the Apple M1 Processor, i.e. not a 'regular' version of Windows 10 for ARM; and certainly not a 'standard' x32/64, version, which wou...

Re: OLE objects in Family Historian
Mike, My misunderstanding. I never have used the 'embedding' feature in FH as there seems to be no purpose to it, other than maintaining GEDCOM compatibility. As originally described it seems somewhat similar in concept to the embedding part of Windows OLE which inserts in a fixed snapshot of data f...

Re: Cloud based software
Helen, Yes, I see the problem of trying to get some clarity into a more precisely defined Wish or set of Wishes. The combination of "Chromebook" and "in the cloud' suggests to me something like the Google concept of everything being stored in Google Drive to be accessed on demand, which leaves me wo...

Re: Cloud based software
Helen, For info. Crossover and 'native' Wine installation are both existing possibilities for Chromebook (Android) users so the existing possibilities should already be similar to those of MacOS and Linux users. I'm not an Android user so can't comment personally on how easy/difficult it might be to...

Re: Make the installation of the pdf driver optional
Colin, Thanks for the information. Glad I gave up on POM after early problems with use on Catalina and Big Sur! I'd guess it's probably an issue in the POM implementation, because complete installation has been successful for me using both Crossover for Mac and Wine in Linux, but I did have to 'kill...

Re: A Tale of Two Laptops, FH v6 & v7, & Crossover!
Colin, I think it may be a bit confusing but for clarification my understanding and experience is: - One Retail FH7 Licence = 2 possible Registrations; - A Host Windows PC, or a Windows Virtual Machine running on a any system would use 1 Registration - A Crossover/Wine installation on MacOS/Linux et...

Re: Make the installation of the pdf driver optional
Colin, I tend to agree with your observation, but mainly because the version of novaPDF being distributed hasn't been updated since 2014 and has been out of support since then; and also because many Windows Anti-virus/AntiMalware software products treat applications which attempt to install addition...

Re: FH v7 and windows emulators WARNING
Colin, It seems to be working for me having FH and AS in the same Prefix (Bottle), but I wouldn't say I've tested all AS features extensively as I tend to do most of my Sourcing work in a Windows System/Windows Virtual Machine. Most Rich Text features work under Crossover/Wine with the notable excep...

Mark,
Yes it does also apply to native Wine installations in Linux. Wine.apps are of course 'frighteningly' large when first seen, compared with native Windows installations; e.g. my FH7+AS7 install is around 1.3GB.

In 19165|A Tale of Two Laptops, FH v6 & v7, & Crossover! You are permitted to have 2 copies of FH7, so that will be your iMac and your new Windows laptop. I don't see that 'problem' at all. The selected individual is always highlighted on screen, i.e. their 'box' is significantly darker in colour compared with all other individuals visible, which seems clear to me. If all boxes are the same colour and shade, then no-one is selected.

Mike, The list of acceptable date modifiers below comes from the 'Getting the most out of RoosMagic 7': There's a printing error in the example for "From/To" RM also accepts Quaker calendar dates such as "10day 3month 1701"; but that's a different story. Mervyn Screenshot 2021-03-22 at 17.19.10.jpg

Re: Repository - Custom ID
Ruth,
It's a standard GEDCOM Tag which basically allows a user to create their own 'alpha-numeric' reference system for individuals in their family tree, if they want to. You can Just ignore it if it's of no interest/use to you, which I suspect most users do.
