A question for ';Pocket Genealogist'; user
Martyn, I use PG much as you propose, most of the time. I have done significant updates to the data during family gatherings. I then generate a GEDCOM of the changes, rather than merging directly with PG (I was rather nervous of that operation). I was able to merge this new GEDCOM with my FH data...

Unmarried relationships
If you set the Status of the relationship to 'Never Married', 'Unmarried Couple' or 'Unknown' they will be linked by a dotted double line. If set to 'Divorced' the link will have a diagonal crossing line.

You can re-order records by clicking the header at the top of the column you want to use for sorting. To sort by date, click on the Dates column. By default this sorts with most recent at the top. Hold down the Alt key while clicking column header to sort in the other order.

The benefit of declaring 'full age', of course, is that you don't require permission from your parent/guardian!

There is a Magnifier program provided as standard with Windows XP. (I'm not sure whether it is always available or only if you select to install the Accessibility options). On my system, I can access it by selecting AllPrograms, Accessories, Accessibilty, Magnifier from the Start menu. There are a n...

I have an HP Deskjet printer (HP5550, a couple of years old). Its driver supports HP banner paper. This paper is rather expensive and limited to only twenty sheets. However, I have found that I can use micro-perforated continuous listing paper in its place. I simply remove the perforated strips from...

'How related', how calculated..?
According to my calculations, FH is correct - and I believe that is also what Herber says. The relative of interest is the first cousin of your g.grandfather, 3 generations from you, hence first cousin, three times removed. The diagram on the second page of Chapter 1 in Herber shows a grandparent ...

Multiple Queries and reports.
In answer to the comment from Chris - I agree one needs to be careful! However, this is precisely what happens if you run Gencom Census at the same time as FH - two programs with the potential to write to the same file. I find it invaluble to be able to add new people in FH as I enter the census ...

Family Historian uses the GEDCOM file format for its data. Most family tree programs will import a GEDCOM file and convert the data to their own file format. So, if you are happy to share all the information in your file, simply provide a copy of your .GED file. They will probably be able to read ...

Another option would be to open multiple copies of FH, loaded with the same data file. You can run different queries in each.
Of course, you do need to remember to save the file if you make any changes - to ensure you are looking at the same data in each copy.

Open two separate copies of FH, load one tree into each copy, then resize the windows so you can see both on the screen.

David, The Ancestry BMD indexes are those of the FreeBMD project (http:\freebmd.rootsweb.com). This project is not yet complete, but the indexes are being updated regularly. They decided to concentrate on the 19th century first - the 1850's are still a bit sparse, you can see the coverage on their...

You can create a query to give you that information. I created a custom query based on the standard query 'Links to Multimedia Objects' and added a 'File' column - this shows filenames with full paths. You can copy or move the files, it won't make any difference as long as they appear in the new lo...

Combining duplicate records.
Select Merge/Compare Records... from the Edit menu. Select the two individuals (move them to the right hand list) then click OK to open the merge dialog.
The two will be displayed side by side with the program's best guess on how they should be merged - just refine this to what you require.

Genes Reunited and privacy
Personally I restrict information about living relatives to their surname and birth and marriage years. I only include them if needed to link parts of my tree I want to publish.
I use Genes Reunited in order to research further back rather than wider, so this approach suits me.

Thanks, though I think that may be a bit hard on Jane - without her efforts we wouldn't be able to download these custom queries!
