Year of Birth etc

When I record a date of birth based on the registration date, I always use Q1, Q2, ... plus the year, e.g. Q1 1901. This method has two benefits. First, it identifies the fact that the birth was registered in that period and might actually have occured in the previous quarter, and second, that there...

Ancestry strikes again!

One trick I've learned when having to search for a page when it's been 'lost' in a search because of manual amendments at the bottom of a page is to note the page number and number of pages when a hit is found. Divide the page number by the number of pages to get a factor that gives the approximate ...

Ancestry strikes again!

Deaths and Marriages are still there, it's only Births that have been 'updated'. However, when I needed to trawl a period of about 10 years c 1960, no images doesn't help, and searches do not give any sensible results - they don't even find me!!!

Narrative reports Carriage return

I think that the ability to format notes is a wish list item. I certainly would appreciate the ability to use fairly standard formatting such as user-defined tabs, paragraphs, different fonts, bold, italic, etc, and tables, as well as being able to insert hyperlinks and 'clickable' cross references ...

Ancestry strikes again!

Ancestry has taken down its Engalnd and Wales 1837 - 1983 Births Index database and replaced it with England & Wales Birth Index 1916 - 2005. Apparently they must think no-one wants to research pre-1916 births. David Graham is a product manager for Ancestry.com. Feel free to contact him with your th...

1911 Census

Alan's point about research is extremely important, highlighting as it does the fairly regular need to scan many pages of original documents to identify the family you want. I had one case where the family gave all sorts of incorrect information, probably to hide the fact that they were not married ...

IGI record - some advice?

You could try a posting on RootsChat. I've often had help from there, and there's places specifically to post look-up requests.

IGI Batch numbers on Rootsweb

The RootsWeb site set set up by Hugh Wallis containing lists if IGI batch numbers by Parish has disappeared. Posts on RootsChat making any mention of this are being taken down. Has anyone any information as to what is going on? The site is (was) and invaluable to anyone needing to search by parish? ...

GedCom Census and Vista

I've just got a shiny new PC with Microsoft Vista Ultimate installed. When I try and install GedCom Census 6.0.6 I get an error message: C:Windowssystem32scrrun.dll Unable to register the DLL/OCX: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x5 I'm signed on as a local administrator, so I should have all the aut...

Gedcom Census 6.0.6 Save problem

Every time I try to do a Save with Gedcom Census V6 I get an error: Runtime Error 6, Overflow. The only button to press is OK, which then causes the program to quit. I've un-installed and re-installed the program a couple of times but the error persists. I've since re-installed V5.4 which continues ...

Surname changes

Hi Jane Yes, that helps a bit, but I have problems with an individual who is first adopted, having a name change at that point, and then has another name change later by deed poll. I did actually create a Name Change attribute as a custon fact that gives me a narrative like 'He changed his name to o...

Surname changes

Can I ask how people manage situations where a individual's surname changes, other than by marriage. I have instances where people have deliberately changed their surnames in order to 'anglicise' them, or where surnames have changed via deed poll when people re-marry and the children adopt the surna...

Family History CD

Jane, I think PSPAD will help where I include static references to another web page, for example where I have a page I built and where I want to point to this page from several individuals' own entries. A lot of folks in my tree were chainmakers, and I have a page on a general chainmaking topic that...

Jane I understand your reply, but it doesn't really help [frown]. I would still need to find the relevent individuals' pages from about 6000 that are currently in my tree. My feeling is that there must be lots of people, like me, who are starting to widen their researches to cover more aspects of th...

I like the feature in FH3 that allows you to create a Family Hsitory CD. But ... there's an awful lot of extra information I have that I want to add. Some of the information relates to specific individuals, some to a family, and some of simple historical interest, or relating to the area where my lo...

The facilities for adding notes are all very well, as far as they go, but is this the best place/method of holding your own or a relative's own account of their past experiences and recollections of family events, particularly if those recollections are accompanied by photos or other 'multimedia' in...

Marriage witnesses, again!

Hello Again Jane I can see that Banns is a separate event, and that it can be used to hold the dates and places for the reading of the Banns. However, I would suggest that there still needs to be a property of the marriage that simply indicates if the marriage is by Banns or Licence, rather than hav...

Marriage witnesses, again!

Hello Jane I've voted on the custom fields wish list item - I found it after I posted my message! My template currently stands as: {value} was a witness at the marriage of {couple} {date} {place} Adding the attribute causes a dialogue box to be displayed for me to select the marriage, so I assume th...

Marriage witnesses, again!

I've set up a custom family attribute for marriage witness, so far so good, but I keep getting the field {couple} replaced by 'they', rather than the names of the couple. The help file, helpfully [rolleyes], says that {couple} will be replaced by the value 'they' or the couple's names depending on t...

Fact Sets, events and attributes

This is an area that's puzzled me for some time, and I must admit I've not yet played with Events and attributes sufficiently to get to grips fully with what you can do. I would like to see an attribute, say Physical Description, that can then have a number of properties defined, say Height, Eye col...

Odd narrative phrases

Patrick, Jane, Thanks for the reply, I've now found the missing witnesses!! However, it would have been nice if Help was able to be a little more specific about the contexts in which {couple} expands either into the couple's names, or just 'they'!! Instead of experiencing a marriage witness (the min...

XML

Hi Jane Table and formatting support on the wish list is good to know, but when can we realistically expect to see this implemented? One of the main benefits of XML is that it is self-defining. Therefore, it should offer much greater flexibility to create, for example, custom event/attribute sets, a...

Odd narrative phrases

I've imported a GEDCOM into FH from Family Tree Maker, where I had set up several Facts such as Marriage Witness, or Army. FHG seems to have sorted these out except that when I do a narrative report, I now get phrases such as 'They experienced Marriage Witness ....' Mariage Witness does not appear i...
