Newspaper mentions
I have accumulated a very large number of newspaper references for some of my relatives across a wide variety of topics, including court cases, bankruptcies, boxing matches, horse races, exhibitions at agricultural shows, school prizes, drownings, advertisements, etc. There does not seem to be any c...

Publishing to CD or website
I wanted to 'publish' my tree as a CD/DVD to distribute amonst family members, rather than publishing it online. I decided to use FH to create the initial web pages, then used Microsoft Expression to hand craft additional pages and modify some of the FH pages. I used Highslide JS to create picture g...

Publishing to a CD
Thanks for your thoughts. I had really hoped to be able to create a CD/DVD that would run with just a web browser and no other software. However, it seems that can't be done. To provide the search functionality I want is going to require some database software sitting in the background, and this imp...

Publishing to a CD
Im in the process of analysing over 2000 mentions of one of my line of relatives in New Zealand newspapers. Im using Microsofts OneNote application at the moment as its a good tool for organising unstructured data. Rather than just analysing the mentions by people mentioned, Im actually doing i...

Pictures on CD
As I suspect with many FH users, I'm amassing a lot of pictures, not just family photos, but images of documents too, that get used in sources. Whilst there are quite good features for controlling the display of images either singly or in small numbers, when you want to display a large number of ima...

So what about the Ipad ??
I've used an iPad in libraries for taking notes. Sadly mine's not an iPad2 so I had also to use my phone camera and manually sync photos with notes. Nevertheless, it's an ideal tool for note taking as it's quite convenient to keep around at all times. There is an iPad Ancestry app that's quite good,...

Desktop publishing options?
I use Corel Ventura 10. However, I'm not sure if it's still available commercially, and it was expensive when it was. Nevertheless, it is probably the best program for organising such complex material as genealogy data. I think Burkes Peerage (at some point, anyway) was prepared for print using Vent...

Down loading images on windos 7 64 bit
I've had problems with images occasionally using the 64 bit version of IE. Flash does not work with 64bit IE.
You could try loading IE via the Start/All Programs menu where you should have the option to use IE or IE 64 bit. Using the 32 bit version may solve the problem.

I had though of screen capture - but this has one significant problem, and that is where the email contains attachments. My objective is really to retain the email, and attachments, as a single source object. The only way I can see to do this is to create a directory structure such that each email i...

Thanks for the replies - gives me something to think about. I actually use Outlook to collect my mail. I also have the Outlook Hotmail connecto...

Does anyone have any suggestions as how best to refer to emails as sources? Also, any suggestions as to the best way to save emails locally on a PC - I'd prefer not to leave them on hotmail, gmail, etc, but to have them filed on my own system.

Searching Census by address?
I have had similar problems with one of the surnames in my family, Stonyer, variously mistranscribed as Stanyer, Stonger, Stanger, Monyer, Stonier, Stranger, and others too numerous to mention. There are various wildcards you can use on Ancestry in most of the search fields. Sto* will find all names...

You may want to look at http://highslide.com This is a free (for personal use) thumbnail image viewer that will allow you to click on a thumbnail and see either a larger version of a single image, or a gallery of images. However, it does mean manually editing your individual web pages. It does seem ...

Upgraded to v4 - Have I Been Done?
Text formatting HAS been requested on numerous occasions: I've raised it before, and again recently in respect of improving the quality of narrative reports, so I'm sorry Jane, but its a bit disingenuous to say it hasn't. I strongly suspect however, this issue might seriously conflict with the 100% ...

Formatting notes
Thanks Jane, Bilko The approach you've mentioned is one that I've used where I want only a single page of a document. However, I want now to be able to re-create the document format consistently for use across quite a number of different individuals. It's not practical to scan the two private census...

Formatting notes
I have some reference material that forms a source for various atributes. The material is a transcription of notes, and I would like to retain the formatting of the original layout if possible. This gives rise to a number of problems: 1. The notes are originally laid out in columns 2. Entries make f...

Running V4 on a Netbook
I got an Acer netbook for Christmas, but with a dual-core AMD procesor, and not the Atom processor usually used, so it's quite a high spec one. It's running Windows 7. It doesn't have a CD/DVD drive, but I had FH3 and the FH4 upgrade installed within half an hour of opening the box over my home netw...

Gedcom census slow
I've recently put all my data onto an external 1Tb hard drive, configured as Raid 1 so if a disk goes down I've still got a backup, and that's connected to my PC on a 100mb network connection. When I click on Save in Gedcom census, it can take 5 - 8 minutes for Gedcom Census to save my file, it not ...

Family Tree CD
Hello Marilyn I have used the Create CD function in V3. It creates, effectively, a website that you can copy to CD. Have created all the files, you can edit them if you have an HTML editor - I'm sure Jane can recommend some. I use Microsoft Expression Web 2, but I got this from work ... In this way ...

Complicated events
I seem to recall something about customising events in V4, so here's a nice puzzle to try and solve ... I've discovered that one bunch of my family were very litigous, and I've got lots of references to court cases they were involed in. The task is to create an event that details whether they were t...

evaluating websites -- where to subscribe?
The simple answer is that you may need to subscribe to several sites to get the information you need. For example FMP has (curently) the 1911, census, Ancestry doesn't; FMP has outgoing passenger lists, Ancestry has the incoming ones. Newspaper archives are often payable subscriptions, but for NZ, p...
