Passenger lists
I think that most of us will have come across our relatives appearing on a passenger list from time to time. This is not always for the purposes of immigration/emigration, but simply for travel from one place to another. My question is how best to record the event? I would like to be able to create ...

Re: Churching
Thanks Mike for the suggestion. I've created a new fact type, Churched that goes some way to do what I want. Can I ask, however, how I can insert the wife's first name rather than have the template generate "She"; insert the husband's name automatically; and is it possible the include only the first...

Churching
I have recently come across a parish register that contains entries for baptisms and churchings. The entries simply state that a child of someone (the father) was baptised on such-and-such a date, and gives what appears to be a fee for the service. The child's name is not given and so needs to be fo...

Gedcom and imported media files
I recently needed to extract a number of records from my "all family" project project to send to someone else interested in one of the surnames I'm researching. I also wanted to send any related images associated with either the individuals or associated sources. I did look at the split tree helper,...

Re: Does the wish list request for formatted text need TLC
I think what many of us want/need is a simple ability to format text as we can already do in a word processor, i.e. choose a typeface, size, weight, etc., apply paragraph formatting such as left and right margins, indents, and tab settings, and have URLs properly recognised. If, in the process we ca...

Re: Spellcheck and formatted text
I had a word with Simon Orde at the WDYTYA show earlier this year and "bent his ear" on this topic
. Whilst there are no firm promises, it seems that it's a topic that he is very much aware of. Mind you, I had a similar response last year ...

Re: FMP 1939 Register
Is it possible to add a column at the start of each line of autotext to include the sub-schedule number? This helps with redacted entries on the forms, but where the identity of those whose entries have been redacted are actually known or can be assumed with a relative degree of certainty?

Re: Residence fact sentence for wife's married surname
There are quite a number of issues there. :D :D If I use a residence fact for each person at an address, then that fact appears on the narrative report for that individual. If I use the witness feature, the other residents for an address get a mention on all the other narrative reports for all the ...

Residence fact sentence for wife's married surname
I've come across a situation where I have two sets of electoral register entries for a couple. The residence entry is straightforward enough, I simply add a residence fact for both people, although I then noticed I can use the Witness feature to create a sentence where the other person has their nam...

Re: Narrative Reports Sentence Templates
This is something I've been looking at for census facts that have been recorded using AS. Rather than have up to four sentences, I'd like one, such as: Bill Smith appeared on the census for 1881, aged 77, living at 123 High Street, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England, where his occupation was given as R...

Changes to census occupations
I've found that if I have made a mistake in an occupation for an individual on a census entry, then on a later census I try to correct it (e.g. wrong capitalisation: draper's assistant should be Draper's assistant) my correction gets replaced by the incorrect version. Has anyone else come across thi...

Re: Change Record ID
As usual, Mike, you are quite correct. However, I read the question as asking if it were possible to alter directly the record id for a specific individual. It seems that this is not possible except using a method that you yourself describe as cumbersome. I used to use the renumber facility regularl...

Re: Change Record ID
FH generates record ids automatically starting at 1 and this will be the case for each project. You won't be able to change these numbers. However, there is a Custom Id field associated with each individual that you could use to maintain your own numbering system across projects. The field appears o...

Re: Italics, bold & underlining
I spoke to Jane about this at last year's WDYTYA show, and was told that it's coming. Not being able to use text formatting is an absolute pain, as it means that I must keep separate copies of notes formatted as I would wish, with all the problems of dual updating. I am disappointed it didn't make i...

Re: Couples with no children
There's a Detail tab on the individual's property box that when enabled allows various obscure fields to be completed, e.g. numbers of children, numbers of marriages, nicknames, also known as, etc. I can't remember offhand how to enable it - I'm sure someone will come along soon who can, but I find ...

Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software
Before we start to bombard Calico Pie with requests to link to various external dataset suppliers, perhaps we should step back and think a bit. I recall seeing somewhere that the license costs for embedding or linking to external features (eg MyHeritage, Maps, etc.) are a significant factor when new...

Re: Using a laptop or notebook for Family Historian
There's a little utility called magicISO that can be used to mount a disc image as a virtual cd drive. It might be enough to fool the NBI software. You will need to create a .iso copy of the original cd though.

Re: Text Formatting In FH6?
The solution to that Peter is to use a markup language such as HTML, BBCode, or Wiki Markup that we are familiar with using in these Forums and in the KB. I'm sorry Mike, but that's a real cop-out. I don't see why anyone should need to get to grips with the complexities of HTML or any other abstrus...

Re: Text Formatting In FH6?
I hope "at the moment" at least indicates that rich text formatting is on the cards. :?: :?: It is a real drain on time and resources to have to re-apply formatting constantly to web output to get it to look attractive on the page, and to apply even the simplest of formatting to guide the reader thr...

Re: Using Ancestry's Family Tree and Family Historian
I periodically replace my tree on Ancestry with a GEDCOM uplift of my FH tree, and make sure it's marked private. The main issues in doing this are that you need to re-invite anyone to view/edit the new tree that you previously gave permision to view/edit your old tree. The main reasons to use Ances...

Just to add my two pen'orth, I use OneNote for organising newspaper reports. It's very good helping organise unstructured data, so I can organise by topic, by title, by person, by date, etc. I can keep whole page and clip images; transcriptions; links to other pages, URLs, etc.; and notes all on the...

Thanks Jane, Nick Every thing is usable, and as you say Jane, you just have to be a bit more accurate with the mouse. It just seems a bit odd that the 1080 resolution is the one that causes problems. My main pc which is 1920 x 1200 dual monitor doesn't have the same issues, and a smaller laptop also...

I'm trying out FH on a new ASUS Zenbook with a 1920 x 1080 display. The toolbar beneath the menu bar is displayd in a smaller font whereas on a desktop, they're both the same size. Then, on the properties dialog box, the toolbox across the centre is cropped at the bottom. I've tried a few changes to...
