Re: Dead people on a census
Goodness gracious me! I had no idea I would spark such a debate. The 1911 census return was completed by the head of the household, in this case the father. I agree it is usual for the entries for number of years married, children born, still living and dead to be listed against the mother's entry, ...

Re: Dead people on a census
I have GRO death index entries for the three children that have died. The age at death corresponds with their birth GRO index entries, and the registry office place is consistent with their births. I have the 1911 source record as exactly as it appears, with all eight children listed. I have checked...

Dead people on a census
I have an interesting situation where I think that a father on the 1911 census has listed all of his children, irrespective of whether they are alive or not. At least two children appear to have died before the census, there are GRO death index entries for them where the age and thus calculated birt...

Re: Baptism Auto Text template - Rich Text
I've been into the Baptism Settings - Method 1 and made some changes, and a few other places as well :D . Quite honestly, that's not somewhere I'd actually thought of looking  - I'd had the settings adjusted such a long time ago. With all the new stuff it's clearly time to re-engage brain, re-...

Re: Baptism Auto Text template - Rich Text
Thanks Nick. I forgot to say that the template refers to 1813 - Baptisms, but I suspect you spotted that ;) Having now looked again at the citation in FH, I see that the Ref ID: is also used to populate the Publication Info : field on the source record - I hadn't spotted that before. The publication...

Baptism Auto Text template - Rich Text
When using the RTF version of the Autotext Baptism template, the No. part of the When Baptized column was not populated. I would normally put this in the Ref ID: field. The column for Associated individuals I have titled, and I have added a further coulmn for Other Information. I have amended the te...

Re: Research notes and Narative reports
I don't believe you can include them in reports, other than the Research Notes report -- by design. :( The reason I was eagerly anticipating research notes was that it would be useful when working with a co-researcher to be able to send a narrative report containing the logic used to derive a parti...

Research notes and Narative reports
I was really pleased to see the appearance of research notes in this new version. I often used to use a stand-alone note against an individual to store this information. Now I can pop it into a Research note, link the note to one or more individuals and display an icon on a digram that indicates the...

Property window and citations
In V6 when I added a source to an event, I saw details of the citation in the lower half right-hand part of the property box when the Show Source option was selected. I have just added a death entry for an individual. My source is the GRO Death Index Entry. My source is called GRO, and I use the tex...

Re: Addresses
There's some interesting thoughts here. The solution I have adopted currently is to use Place and Address as I would if addressing a letter - as recommended elsewhere. Place I therefore define as Village/Town/City, County, Country and Address a house number/name, street, location/region/district, po...

Re: Addresses
And I haven't even got to "At sea" yet! I only posted this after reviewing the KB articles, which, if I'm honest, didn't offer a great deal of help. So, I pondered a long time over house numbers, but having the street/road name on its own is useful when it comes to finding people who live in the sam...

Addresses
I have recently been standardising the entry of addresses in my database, and following other suggestions from here, the solution I have adopted is currently to use four fields: 1. House or building name 2. Street or Road name 3. Sub-district or Locality 4. Post Code This works well except where I h...

Re: Sentence template
I had seen the Arrival and Departure facts from the extended set, Mike, but I don't feel that they alone allow me to tell the story behind the event as I would like - although I'm well aware that there are probably several other different ways to use FH to present this information. The main reason f...

Re: Sentence template
Thanks Mike. Round 1 completed :D Now, passenger manifests may be for incoming or outgoing passengers. I want to use the date field on the event to identify either the date of arrival or the date of departure. Clearly, I can create two events, one for arrival and one for departure with the date from...

Sentence template
I am re-building my sentence template for passenger lists. It makes extensive use of =GetLabelledText to extract information from the note accompanying the event to build up a narrative sentence. My template, so far, looks like this: <para>{individual} was listed on the {label} for the vessel {=GetL...

Membership of organisations
Simple question, I hope. What is the best way to record that an individual was a member of a specific, non-military, organisation, for example, RAOB, or Freemasons?

Dated Notes
Is it possible to put a date on a free-standing note? I would like to be able to record information gained from narrative sources such as newspapers that are difficult, if not impossible, to attach to an event, or commentary that expands on a person's life, placing some of that individual's actions ...

Very wide text
This question may be less relevant when (if) FH7 eventually arrives. I have been doing quite a lot of research recently on a branch of my family that emigrated to the USA. As a consequence I've been transcribing a lot of US census entries. Even on dual monitors, getting all the columns to line up is...

Re: Death & Burial entries
The second of Lorna's examples is quite similar to the ones I'm finding, they're mainly from Pennsylvania. At the moment I add the death with AS, and then add the burial in FH using the death certificate as the source.

Death & Burial entries
I have been researching a branch of the family that emmigrated to the US. I'm finding that on the death certificates it also gives the date and place of burial, and the name of the funeral director. Would it be possible to update the Death entry to include burial details as well, rather than having ...

Occupation in narrative reports
I have an individual in my tree who was a musician and, according to a large volume reports in the Stage seems to have worked in many different theatres around the country. In the narrative report, the sentence reads to the effect that on a particular date he was a musician in whichever town he was ...
