Jane, you do realise by posting something like that, lots of people are now either cursing you or checking all over the web to find out when! [eek]

backup versus GED file save

Sorry John, just read your other post in Dagwoods thread. You have your media linked and not saved in the project. That's why the copy of the project folder does not transfer the images. For the images to show on the laptop project, you must copy the images as well as the project from the desktop to...

backup versus GED file save

I use memory stick at the moment. Trouble is that I keep forgetting to pack the thing and end up with a laptop with an out-of-date file! If you do want to go for the memory stick, the trick is to find the file the media is residing in. Did you let FH copy the media into the project? Or did you link ...

backup versus GED file save

John, I have the same setup. I have FH on my desktop and laptop. It's more common than you think and most people use a program/service called dropbox. But you can use a memory stick just as well (I do), provided you coppy all the files in the project folder, not just the ged. I assume you are famili...

Merging Two Projects Together.

I've not tried it with a Project, but when I merge a gedcom into a project, it asks if I want to copy the existing media into the project file. So it asks if I want to copy the pictures from the gedcom into the project. I'd still make sure to take copies if I was you before you try merging, but you ...

Employing trainers is expensive and I doubt the market for FH is big enough to support the kind of salary you would need to pay someone for them to be a full time expert in FH, be willing to travel the country and be a qualified trainer. Or at least able to train. Also, I don't know of any other pro...

Paper Filing Systems

If that works for you: Great! Don't change a thing! BUT I don't find paper systems relating to one individual very usefull due to marriage certificates and census. I don't really fancy having 8 copies of 1 census image. I tried that and it got very messy. Plus I only have 1 marriage certificate with...

Colour coding parts of a diagram?

Thanks Jane, you're a star! I'd never worked that out myself. I can do basic queries, but that's about it.

And yes, I will be going to v5 when it comes out, so I would be very interested in that script.

Colour coding parts of a diagram?

That's the trouble, I'm looking at colouring different branches of the root persons ancestry different colours.

I wonder if you can replace 'File Root (), Ind%' with a set ID number? ie make the expression =IsAncestorOf ID8. I'll give it a try and let you know.

Colour coding parts of a diagram?

As I sat colouring in my husbands family tree over the weekend,I was wondering if there is an easy way you can have FH colour code branches of an ancestor diagram. For those that don't want to read the whole story ( 9789|Paper Filing Systems ) here's the short version; I'm looking to colour the diag...

Paper Filing Systems

It looks like a really good system. I've come across colour coding filing outside of family history and it works well there. I think it would be worth a shot, although I'm not 100% sure how well it will work with generation 6, 7, etc. My system is very much set up in family groups and the problem I'...

I wish someone had told me . . . When I started

With regards to sources, it's more a case of I which I'd listened! What I wish people had told me: Moving Gedcom from program to program corrupts it. You'll find loads of weird entries by the time you settle on a program. Therefore don't start entering serious data until you're settled. Resist the t...

To be totally honest, if FH included diagrams in the output without having to save them first, it would be much better than PhpGedView or any other program I've tried. What drew me to PhpGedView was to ability to give others limited editing ability, so they could record the changes to living people ...

Publishing to CD or website

Ah, well, I use Ubuntu instead of Windows on my FH laptop, meaning I have PhP, apache etc all installed as standard. That's probably the biggest reason why I'm not sure I'd be any good at writing the Knowledge Base article about putting PhPGedView on the web. Besides, the KB already includes a how t...

Sorry I'm late coming to this thread, but PhpGedView can be run from a CD:
http://wiki.phpgedview.net/en/index.php ... PhpGedView

It's a bit technical (ok, a lot technical) but it would suit your needs. Give me a shout if you're still interested and can't get it to work yourself.

Version 4.02 and Vista SP2

Turns out uninstalling SP2 created some fatal errors on my machine and I ended up having to reinstall windows on the laptop. I went with 64 bit that's on the desktop, so I should have no more issues.

I've had contact from FH support. They are definitly looking at this with some interest. I'll let you know what worked for me once we've solved it. At the moment, Comodo looks like it might be the culprit (firewall & virus software)

To be honest, I'm not sure on IE8 as I only have it installed for emergencies, I always use Firefox. I couldn't tell you when it was installed. However, I only uninstalled the Servie Pack last night and it worked again, I did not uninstall IE 8 or roll back to a previouse restore point or anything. ...

Version 4.02 and Vista SP2

I double checked everything last night:
Windows Vista x64 with SP works fine

Windows Vista x32 without SP can run FH
(but is dreadfully slow due to the absence of SP)

Windows Vista x32 with SP will not run FH at all, no matter what I try.

I hope that helps.

Jane said: I am running SP2 Vista x64 with out issues. Interesting Jane, I missed this earlier. My x64 desktop seems to have no issues. But the monitor of that is the main TV, so I can't spend a lot of time on that. My main PC is my x32 Vista, which is causing the issues. I really don't want to re-...

How did you decide who to have as your Root Person

I tend to have my other half as the root as it is his tree after all [smile]

I move the root about if I am doing a report for relatives, so they are the focus of the report and it is all very relevant to them.

I'm in exactly the same boat with my laptop. My desktop however appears to be fine so far (Only running trial version due to issue with key). Both run Vista, but my desktop is 64 bit, the laptop 32 bit.

And no luck with the DEP either.

Thanks arishmell. That info didn't make sense, as most of his assignments are all Chatham or around there until he gets moved to Gosport (HMS Dolphin) for submarine training. But your kind assistance has pointed me in the right direction, and further research shows HMS Tenedos / HMS Ganges was stati...
