Didn't realise Free BMD has gone that far forward. No sign of my husband on there. Interstingly enough, my in-laws are there. They shan't be happy when I tell them! Will be an intersting conversation.Stevebye said:

But to get to the index, you have to pay. Granted, ancestry/fmp membership isn't much, but it's a deterrent for fraudulent activity. I suppose as long as you can't get an uncertified copy without a GRO reference and it doesn't become a replacement for the index, it should be all right. I actually th...

Actually, I'm not sure I'm in favour of this. From a family history research point of view it would be fantastic. But for living people, it would be another instance of their data being online. It's far too easy as it is for identity fraud to happen. The current cost is at least a small deterrent. I...

Does anyone have a good source for images of traditional county flags? I want to include icons in diagrams to show where people came from within England, but I need some flags to get started. I'm mainly after Northumberland, Co. Durham, Yorkshire, Yorkshire Ridings (east and west), Lancashire, Susse...

As I'm sure you've all worked out by now, I'm useless at expressions etc. I've just downloaded Jane's excellent Clean up Surname Capitalisation and ran it. It's very nice, but highlighted that I have first names in all caps too! And names with no capitalisation on either surname or first name. Is th...

That's good to know. If it disrupts things, I'll go back to using Nvu to edit html. Just means I can only do it on one pc, but I'd rather do that than upset what FH creates.

I haven't yet had a good play with FHv5, but I suspect that FH itself is not capable of doing this as it won't know which ones are of particualr interest. However, any word processing program will be able to open the .html file as something you can edit. Go to the website/CD folder before you burn i...

Ancestral sources is an upgrade from gedcom census. On top of that, the information is saved in the family historian gedcom/project. Nothing is saved in Nick's programs. So whatever you have already done in Gedcom Census, you did to the gedcom and will show in FH, regardless of version and wether or...

V5 will overwrite v4, but will keep all your custom settings, diagrams, reports, etc. It adds features, so I don't see why you would want to run both versions?

I'll try Dagwood, but words aren't my strong point. I have 1 project that's my 'clean' file. It's all the information I have found in records, certificates etc. I have a second project called Ancestry. I started with the gedcom from Ancestry of one of my trees (like you, I have multiple ancestry tre...

I have a file where I can see multiple instances of 1 event, ie 3 births. All details appear the same appart from the source. Is there any way I can merge events? The individual people have been merged as have the families, but I am left with duplicate events.

It sounds odd to not need version 3 licence number at least, but you guys are the experts! I have bought a v5 full as like you I have a full v3 and v4 upgrade. I have had to reinstall in the past and will need to again soon and I just couldn't face that hassle again. Didn't know I'd only need the up...

Probably should have clarified that, you don't need v4 key to install v5 upgrade if you have v4 currently running, only if you need to reinstall totally in case of PC failure/new PC.

I hope I understood this correctly. You want to look at a spreadsheet of FH data and compare this to a spreadsheet of Ancestry data. You also want to use said spreadsheets individually so you know what data Ancestry is missing and what FH is missing (and possibly see if you have that data in the oth...

Sorry John, but that's not correct. Lorna & Tatewise have it right, you need to upgrade to the major version in between or buy a full install. You do not need to upgrade minor versions, ie 3.0 to 3.1 or 4.0 to 4.1.3. Sihick, please make sure you have access to the licence key for v4 upgrade. It will...
