Re: Ancestry technical update
I have found that the quickest way to find out if ancestry is experiencing probs is to go to their Facebook site.

Re: Call to iPad Users
I have also seen this app for the iPad called 'papers' http://www.papersapp.com/ios/
It seems like it acts as a portable repository for research documents which you can then annotate and sync with your PC or Mac. Not tried it. Windows/Mac versions not cheap!

Re: What other software do you use for Family History?
I have been dabbling with Scrivener on my PC. I am using it to write up a Family History in narrative form. I know I could us FH to produce a book but I want this 'book' to supplement the data in FH not repeat it and am trying to create more of a 'story' than a data driven record. Unfortunately, Scr...

Re: Call to iPad Users
I have had the opposite experience with Teamviewer. On a trip to the UK I was away for 10 days and left it running on my PC at home accessed it 2 or 3 times every day without any issues whatsoever. I suspect it depends on exactly what you are doing. Did your computer switch to 'standby' (or whateve...

Re: Call to iPad Users
On my iPad I use GedFamilies but while it is useful to see records it is not in FH's league. I don't use it to update data (I use my desktop with FH) I just use it as a viewer. I do like GenQuiry for its detailed approach and would rely on it more if I could use it on my iPad but I understand the co...

What other software do you use for Family History?
I use OneNote http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/onenote/ It is great for dumping research into. If you are using an iPad you can also use OneNote with Outline+ http://outline.ws/ This is fully compatible with OneNote. If you are researching away from home you can use Dropbox to sync your MS OneNot...

My file hierarchy for research is based on family names and within each family folder I then have a separate folder for the type of record e.g. birth; marriage; death; census; military etc. Often times I will create a folder (e.g. 'Recent Research') on my desktop into which I 'dump' all the recent d...

The box in the Census options is ticked.
It seems to be the same with all images - I will just have to keep trying.

When I select Add/View Images> Select File the search defaults to a sub-folder on my C: drive in which I keep files before copying them to the Project Folder. This would be fine but the default is not the root folder but a sub-folder relating to a specific family name rom which I selected a file mon...

I just noticed the same thing happening when I was typing in a Note. I wanted to move the last word (a name) I had typed and it highlighted all but the last letter fo the name. I then tried other words in the Note without a problem. I then realised that I had not pressed the space bar after the na...

Thanks Helen for the clarification on Windows 8 and GenQuiry. I am still using it and find it useful in particular for gathering together info on the brickwalls. Would also like to try it out on my trip to Ireland later this year to see what it is like 'on-site; in records offices etc - if I can get...

Windows 8
Glad I read this. I am off to Ireland this year and wanted to take a netbook/laptop/tablet to conduct family research and keep in contact with Skype and email etc. Because I can't transfer FH to anything other than Windows I had thought about buying a Dell 10' which has Windows RT. Back to the drawi...

Peter - point taken but it is more than cosmetic. Until I spotted what was happening I was deleting what I thought was the whole name and typing in the new one and it was not bringing it up. I then realised that it was because it had the 'rogue' letter at the end. I never noticed this in previous ve...

When I double click on an existing name I have typed into the Find box on the Individuals page so that I can search for another name the system selects all the letters of the name to be replaced except for the last one. This is no matter how long/short the name is. For example if the name in the box...
