Re: Export a subset
Yes. You need to start by adding all the required people to a Named List. One way to do this is by selecting them in a diagram. This technique is explained in this article in the Knowledge Base: Create an export GEDCOM based on a diagram Come back and ask again if you have any problems following tha...

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums
The other trouble is that it's a subjective judgement: is this a philosophical discussion about what the GEDCOM committee meant, or is it fundamental to answering a question about, say, the way names are handled in FH? And at what point does it need to attract the label 'Here be Dragons' if the beg...

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums
Exporting, wouldn't Importing/Exporting be the functional area? The existing 'Importing and Exporting' forum will be just for Importing. This is because most of the issues encountered by migrants from other software are not relevant to ‘General Usage’ of FH. Exporting is likely to be of wider inter...

Re: Edit of Marriage record
As well as the mystery of what the note says, there are the mysteries of when it was written, why it was written, and why in Greek letters. Agatha Chrisitie could have built a whole novel round it. From what you have said the couple were both from the village where the marriage took place, so it was...

Re: Events and Fact Sets
The baptism fact in the Standard set won't have been removed, but it will have been 'eclipsed' by the one in the custom set, and consequently hidden. This is because the custom set has priority over the standard set (by default, but the priority of different sets can be changed) so if both sets have...

Gary, I'm in haste now and can't spend long explaining, but if you go back to the post you mentioned earlier in this topic, which you said you had found 21211|Understanding source templates and re-read that it would be a good starting point. Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
Lorna; Much as I hate quoting Evidence Explained , to me, it makes one reasonable point about the subject of citation; "we cite what we see". Yes, but that's in the context of not citing an original parish register (say) when what we've actually seen is a derivative (be it image, or transcription)....

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
Lorna; I read over your most recent post. It left me slightly confused and I "think" I know why. Are you are looking at a citation on an entry-by-entry basis? ... I would attach the relevant page-images and transcribe them in the citation-portion. This would not result in multiple records to change...

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
I needed to find an objective way of defining the "Splitter" end-member of the spectrum. For me, I always go to the 'splitter' end of the spectrum when: (a) I have media to link. This is partly for historical reasons - as I said in my previous post, in early version of FH it was much easier to 'see...

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
I agree with Helen, splitting/lumping is a continuum. The level of granularity at which you choose to ‘split’ is flexible. One practical consideration is the linking of images. In early versions of FH it was not so easy to link media items to citations and when they were linked to citations they wer...

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?

Yes, but with particular emphasis on moving posts to the Importing forum if they are unlikely to impinge on new or existing users who are not ...

John, you have asked this question before. See 21265|Uploading media The topic got quite long, but the short answer was that FH remembers the last folder used. Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?

In practice I know some people spend several months doing trial imports before they feel they have got things right, and they w...

I still think that 'migration from another product' is a use case with particular challenges. Not all migrants as as willing as you to consider workflow changes. And those new users who aren't migrants may find getting started easier. I think this is an important point. Users migrating from other s...

Re: Replacing Pre-Existing Facts as part of RE-DO using AS
I did notice one odd thing upon import. If the image was scanned, FH7 seemed to use my embedded scanner name as the title and the embedded scan date in the date field. FH7 must be looking "inside" a file in certain cases. That's not a problem; just something unexpected and easily fixed from within ...

Mike, I think John is probably still talking about Bookmarked repositories, which you mentioned in your first reply (10 March). If so, then the answer to his question on 28 April " ...
