FH can't find my file
'When I navigate to the Family Historian Projects folder, and open the folder for the default project, I see a Public Folder and a folder called Project Name.fh_data,...' The .ged file should be INSIDE the Project Name.fh_data folder. Can you confirm that you have looked INSIDE this folder? The Pr...

OK, if FH is using the project on D drive you don't need to change that (assuming that's still the place you want your project to be). You can double-check this again in FH by clicking File> File Statistics. If it is pointing to the wrong one, use File > Project Window, click on 'Browse for Projects...

Data not going accross to Family Historian
First you need to check whether you have two complete copies of your project, or just one copy of the project (in C:my documents) and one copy of the Gedcom alone (on D drive). It may be that although your original gedcom file was on D drive the project was ceated by default in My Documents. The pro...

Branch Merge / Compare- How?
Hi Colin, I do urge you to stick with FH if you can: it is a very sophisticated program but unfortunately that is what makes it a bit daunting at first. I have always used FH, but I do know that many of its current users have switched from other programs and sometimes found the transition difficult,...

Branch Merge / Compare- How?
Hi Colin I have not done a branch merge myself and I agree the instructions are a bit hard to follow but I think you need to start by selecting the two Family Records you want to merge. You can set up the Records Window to display a tab for Family Records by using Tools > Preferences > Records Wind...

There is only one gedcom file within each project so if you told AS to open the correct FH project file then it must be editing the right gedcom. Can you confirm that when you run FH you are opening the same project (from the project window) and not opening your original version of the gedcom in sta...

Find duplicate individuals?
'I have been getting some records by gedcom from other researchers and it would be nice if there was a ready way for auto report on suspected duplicates' As mentioned previously, merging/comparing whole gedcoms is possible. In this case the merge/compare dialog produces a full list of possible mat...

Data not going accross to Family Historian
Did you have the FH program open while you were using Ancestral Sources? If so you will need to let FH re-load the gedcom file (you would have seen a messeage saying the file had been altered by another program and asking you if you want to re-load it). If this is not the case then AS must have been...

You will need to delete the 'family' record for the duplicate spouse. Go to the All tab of the husband's property box (or expand his record in the records window) and scroll down to the two 'Spouse family' fields. Select the one which now has no spouse name and hit the delete key. (Do make sure firs...

Find duplicate individuals?
The best way to look for potential duplicates is to display the records window for individual records, sorted on the first column (Surname followed by forenames) and look for similar dates and birthplaces in later columns. Once you have identified possible duplicates, use 'Merge/Compare records' fro...

Pool Numbers
I am using v 5.0.2 but I am still NOT finding any errors. The vast majority of my individuals are in Pool number 1 but I have 48 other small pools. All appear to be correct and have not changed since 5.0.0. I have experimented with adding some new individuals then closing and opening FH again but...

I have not been able to replicate the problem and pool numbers still seem to behave as I would expect.
However a couple of people on the FH Mailing List have today reported issues with pool numbers so perhaps some new problem has crept in?

'New!' Persists after Reading Postings
This has just happened to me a couple of times, but not consistently.
Conversely, in an additional twist I've had some cases where the New Posts icon correctly appeared but the new posts in question were NOT marked with the New! suffix!
Using my usual Firefox browser.

You should be able to produce an All Relatives or Descendant diagram based in Katherine and Alan as a couple, which will include Alan's first wife and children. Can you confirm what kind of diagram you are using (e.g. All Relatives? Descendants? Ancestors and Descendants?) and who the diagram root i...

Beth, If the diagram root is Katherine or one of her blood relatives then Alan's first wife and children will not be included. This is because for the purposes of FH a 'relative' is any blood relative or spouse of a blood relative. Under this definition Alan's first wife and children don't count as ...

Ancestors and Descendants diagram in V5
Evidently my memory of the V4 Ancestor & Descendant diagram options was wrong - apologies - I probably always had the option to display siblings' branches unticked. What does seem to have changed some time between V3 and V5 (accoring to the quote given by Tim Treeby from the V3 help) is that the def...

This was discussed in another thread: http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi?action=forum&board=Usage&op=display&num=6087 The workaround Jane suggested was to save the diagram as an image, then rotate it and insert it into a blank chart. Then add the chart into the book. A bit cumbersome, though. ...

No, because he could have been born in December 1797 and started the education in September 1815 when he was 17 years and 9 months.
When dates are given only in years FH calculates the maximum possible age range.

What seems to have changed is that the option in the general tab of Diagram Options is, as Tatwise says, now an option to exclude the siblings BRANCHES. As far as I remember, in V4 it was an option to exclude the siblings themselves (and their branches never showed anyway). The quickest way to achie...
